Agreed. What's up with Apple's obsession with making everything thinner these days? The thicker it is the more breathing space it has and thus runs cooler.
Apple should've just put Intel chips into the PowerBook G4 cases since the beginning of the Intel transition.

Basically, Apple did just what you are saying? There was very little change between the G4 case and the MBP case. The thickness didn't change.

The thickness did change. The MBP is thinner and lighter than the Powerbook. :)

Well I have both side by side and I can't see or feel any difference. I have the last gen G4 PB and the first gen MBP. Biggest difference is battery size, mag safe adapter, intel processor. If there is any weight difference it must be a few grams.

And it would be nice to see a 12" PowerBook G4 Intel as well.
Basically what I am saying is: Apple should never re-designed the pro laptops (from late PPC to Intel) even if the difference is slight. The PowerPC PowerBook G4s were good the way they were.

or

Maybe I am just a nostalgic person.

Er, the difference is obvious. I'm not sure how you can have them side by side and not notice the difference. It was obvious when my mbp was beside my pb.

the intel mbp closed is the same height as the bottom case of the pb G4 with the screen open. About.

OK, I measured them and here is the comparison. Both models are the 17" screen.

My PBG4 measures 1" x 15.4" x 10.4" and according to the tech specs weighs 6.8 lbs.

My MBP measures 1" x 15.4 x 10.2" and according to the tech specs weighs 6.8 lbs.

Visually there is a slight difference in thickness although due to the rounded shell it might be a little misleading by looking at the edges. When looking at the center there is no visible difference in thickness.

So yes the MBP is .2" less wide and maybe millimeters thinner but weighs nearly the same.

Fair enough. I thought you were comparing the 15inchers. The 17 inch PB's were always thinner than the 15 inchers. So the difference is less marked there.

Cheers

its about 1/10th of an inch by the specifications but it seems like more by visual comparison when I put them side by side. But regardless they made it a little thinner and took out the vents on the sides, two things that contribute to the heat.

At least the aluminum case acts as a heatsink. Imagine a 1 inch plastic enclosure how hot the cpu would get.

i was also thinking that probably the odd holes where the apple logo will be placed, are more like hinges for it and will probably have a black apple logo like the ones on the i mac!!! (just assuming)
but wouldn't that be just GREAT ? ? ?

no. it would be horrible.

I was mostly talking about the 15-inchers.

Anyways, can't wait to see these new MacBook Pro and MacBook designs.
The MacBook really does need a design change because it's the only Mac that's left in plastic while all the other Macs transitioned to more environmentally-friendly aluminium.

It's a picture of a comparison between a powerbook and a macbook pro I found.
Apple didn't really need to make the Intels thinner in my honest opinion.

Masse, meet the Macbook. Macbook, say hello to masse.

And yes, the Macbook gets much toastier than the Macbook Pro - about 10C on average, just idling.

If you view the large version of the picture from the post, on the bottom of the picture you can see that there is an opening cut out for the hinge in the aluminum case, like in the current macbook pro case. That means that that part is the back of the laptop, and the battery is in the front.

I annotated the hinge opening in the attached pdf.
Ahh I see it.

I'm also in the market for a new laptop and have been waiting to see what's on deck.

If apple does put blu-ray drives in their notebooks I would expect that it would probably be optional (@~$300-$400 upgradeable feature).

Something that I would like to see would be HDMI, several PC manufacturers already offer this.

DisplayPort matches and exceeds the functionality of HDMI. DisplayPort is the future. If Apple includes HDMI, they better have a DisplayPort also.

I actually starting to think the case in the photograph is actually an aluminium MacBook. The MacBook Pro case would've looked bigger.
Maybe that's just me.

Highly likely, seeing as it's the interface backed by Intel. I expect Apple would have to remove it from the core Intel chipset for it not to appear on new models.

Obviously everyone who says its a macbook seems to be retarded since AI said they heard from they're inside connections that the pictured MBP is actually legit.

i think it's a Macbook too and last time I checked I was not retarded ( although your mileage may differ)

Yes apparently the pic is 'legit' but who is to say that it is definitely a MBP that's up in the air till release day imo

Really? I had always heard the Aluminum on the MBP was hotter than the plastic of the MB. I guess you learn something new everyday...i guess that means I'm done, no more learning today :D  ;)
