I'm amazed at how easily some of the younger kids here fall victim to conspiracy theories and alleged "controlled" leaks by Apple.

I'm not saying Apple has never done such things but it's FAR, FAR less frequent than some of the forum members here would have you believe it to be.

It's unnecessary. There is no grand scheme really. The announcement on Sept. 12th, along with a few ads, would be more than sufficient for Apple to sell a boatload of the new iPhones.

The majority of the mainstream public do not have time (or the desire) to rent a rooming house on MacRumors.com for days/weeks/months/years bickering about the likelihoods of each and every Apple related rumor.

Take your tinfoil hats off and just enjoy the blurry snapshots of the future.

:p

Also... to add to some other posters comments... who cares if people are calling the new iPhone... the iPhone 5? It's not that serious.

Knowing that the new iPhone will technically be the 6th iteration in the series will not bolster your resume for that Apple Genius position you've been desperately applying for.

Who cares about this sort of stuff.

It's really going to impress your GF. "Well of course I have the new iPhone 5 with the logic board that had three 2mm holes for fixing. There is a funny story about that where the photos were leaked on .... stop where are you going, come back!"

what's with all these too much leaks about the upcoming iphone? not sure if this is from apple like their "controlled leaks" but don't they wanna make it a surprise this september? (i mean the leaks are great but it's kinda too much lol)

-4 inch Display
-1136 X 768 Resolution at 326 ppi
-A5X Chipset
-LTE
-Aluminium back
-1440 MAh Battery
-iOS 6
-8 MP Camera with better optics

I think the rumors have covered it all. Apple is gonna have a hard time surprising us. However, they can still surprise us with something like Siri but I don't care about that feature. A larger screen and LTE is enough for me to pre-order this phone.

The back was rumored to be either steel or aluminum

The frequency of "Leaks" has me thinking that a part of this must involve Apple. There's simply too many, and Apple is too powerful, especially over their suppliers to allow this to continue.

As I see it there are a few possibilities.

1) Apple is orchestrating the leaks "from suppliers".

2) The suppliers have tested the waters and found Apple "looking the other way".

3) Apple's long time advocates in the industry, or the writers like Walt Mossberg, David Pogue, et al, that were the anointed ones by Steve Jobs during the early days, then continuing till Steves passing, are the ones behind some of this.

There's too much to be gained in page views for the sites, and too much benefit from the buzz for Apple. It's simply not a case of Apple sitting back aimlessly, allowing this to happen.

4) Apple's production volumes and distribution over many different production sites inevitably create opportunities for manufacturing workers to steal work in progress and sell these to rumor blogs.

Those people interested in these parts and that read these blogs in most cases already know there will be a refresh in september, and those people that don't know this are unlikely to be interested in news about logic boards.

I don't see Apple leaking this on purpose. The benefit is too small. Apple wants to stimulate sales of the 4S up until the announcement of the new iPhone. So anything they do that has a big impact and will "alert" the general consumer will result in sales holding off until the new announcement. Something which we are already seeing at this moment.

The most effective strategy to signal a refresh AND to sell 4S'es is by discounting the 4S in advance as the telecoms are already doing.

Except the general public didn't know that 4 = 4th gen (so you're making the same mistake as those arguing for the iPhone 6). 4 was just a logical number to come after the 3G/3GS. The same would be true of the 5, except they may call it "the new iPhone" instead. The general public is certainly not going to care about or remember what the iPhone's processor is called.

The name of the thing means nothing to the general public. Most people just run around screaming "OMG I just got the new iPhone" rather than saying "OMG I got an iPhone XX"... It's not just that they don't know about the significance, they simply do not care, so long as it looks new or has some new feature that they can show off to their work buddies.

But Apple does always speak about the naming, just briefly. I agree the general public doesn't care/care to know, but that hasn't stopped Apple from making the names meaningful in the past. The number 5 has zero significance to this device (as far as we know), so it makes zero sense to me. Even iPhone 4G makes more sense to me (with the inclusion of LTE).

At the end of the day, the name that makes the most sense is just 'The New iPhone'... The numbering stops sounding good when you get past the first few.

Another reason for the leaks could be ,many iPhone 4 buyers are out of contract June July. With apple changing the refresh date to sept, they need to make sure these out of contract buyers don't go and get another phone before the new one is released.
A lot of people like to get a new phone as soon as there contract ends, these
Leaks might pacify enough people to hold off

If this is true, Apple phones are becoming the mark of a sheeple type person . Why would anyone want a skinny phone ? Skinny jeans maybe ? I hate those people to though !

I'm sorry to say this but Google has finally surpassed Apple in every way in the smartphone market. This 4S will be the last in a fun 4 generations of upgrades.

It's a no brainer at this point if you are a tech enthusiast.

But if you just blindly worship everything Apple does , (and many people just piss themselves at the near mention of an Apple product ) then go ahead and support the hole they dug for themselves .

What ? .....Fragmentation ? That's called "Support" suckers :)

I understand that this is MacRumors ......But consider that my disapproval is only a light opposition for what I perceive to be a failing company in the waning days of public opinion.

Apple will rule for another 2 years, but Microsoft has a few more tricks up their sleeves.

Windows Phone 9 is the starting point.

Stay tuned

So instead of blindly worshipping Apple, people should blindly listen to you?

Don't see the difference myself.

The main problem with your argument is that the vast (and I do mean vast) majority of Apple's customers are not tech enthusiasts, so if you want to convince people, you're preaching in the wrong square.

My main impression from these photos (the ones where someone is holding the case) is that this thing is just too long. Doesn't look good IMHO.

If they call it the iPhone 5 I won't be buying it. I'm tired of this misleading bs from Apple. I know millions of other people who plan on buying a smartphone in Q4 2012 who will refuse to buy iPhone if it's called iPhone 5 too.

So, you are saying that you will not be buying a smartphone based on it's name?

What will you buy instead? A Motorola Defy? An HTC Arrive? Or a Casio G'One Commando? (all actual names...)

Not judging or anything, but not-buying a product based on expectations of a name is somewhat ridiculous. If we would all do that Skymall would be out of business.

iPhone owners aren't going to buy any other smartphone brand than Apple. Once a consumer owns an Apple device, they never consider switching to any of the alternatives. Virtually every brand satisfaction survey confirms this.

Even Android and Windows Phone fans are holding out waiting to see what the next iPhone will do before making a new purchase. The whole world is basically waiting on Apple's iPhone 5 announcements.

So Apple doesn't need to participate in controlled leaks. There's no way they are playing this game.

People are buying the competitors phones, so there's always the risk.the s3 seems to be selling well in my country the uk. With several people I know having ditched 3s and 4 ( granted not a scientific study)
But if I were apple it's a risk I'd want to try to minimise

I can't believe we're discussing tis again...

Haha. Let's swap problems...

Of course it is the 6th generation, but no one called it "5th generation iPhone". We just call it iPhone 5, because it fits better to the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S schema.

I still think it'll either be called the iPhone 4GS, or the "new iPhone".

Yup. The people on this forum seem largely incapable of counting to 6 and realizing this is the 6TH GENERATION iPHONE

It's actually the 5th generation, if you go by Apple's model IDs.

iPhone (original) = iPhone1,1
iPhone 3G = iPhone1,2
iPhone 3GS = iPhone2,1
iPhone 4 = iPhone3,1
iPhone 4 (CDMA) = iPhone3,3
iPhone 4S = iPhone4,1
New iPhone = iPhone5,1

This is because the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G shared identical hardware internally, except for the baseband processor.

So you can't see anythign new with the design?
OMG!! Yes, you are so damn right? Look at the volume buttons and the sleep button? They are exactly the same.....!!!! Looks like the home button is on the same location too???

Nothing new here!! I will give it a pass. Will wait for the iPhone with teleporter or at least holographic facetime.

These are just minor cosmetic changes. Ultimately it's a stretched iPhone 4/4S with an aluminium back.

If Apple think that tarting up an iPhone 4 will make people think it's the best thing since sliced bread they're wrong. Will it sell well? Of course because enough people will want it because it's shiny and new.

I don't think Apple has ever really pushed the iPhone 4 to be known as the 4th generation iPhone. 4 = 4th generation makes sense to us because we know this; the general public doesn't. In fact, from the WWDC 2010 keynote in which Jobs revealed the iPhone 4:

2007 The iPhone re-invents the phone
2008 The iPhone 3G and the App Store
2009 The iPhone 3GS is twice as fast
2010 The biggest leap since the original iPhone

Cool sarcasm!

What do people expect? It's a smartphone, so Apple will do what all manufacturers do and that's update the specs and provide a new design which is an evolution of the previous design.

Apple's product development makes sense. They upgrade their phones every year and evolve the designs from the previous one. This makes their phones instantly recognisable and doesn't alienate existing customers. In fact most manufacturers pursue a similar strategy. If you look at the iPhone 4 compared to the iPhone 3GS, it's not so much different. The jump in design from the 3GS to the 4 is comparable to the jump from the 4 to the new iPhone.

What changes do people expect in design from the new iPhone besides the updated specs? Maybe some people that are so vocal here in slamming this design can explain what they expect.

Can't believe people actually having the same boring iPhone 5/6 discussion on every single thread / news / rumor ... Geee ...

Totally OT, but I think this web site needs to be renamed to iOSRumors....

Strictly speaking this thread is about the hardware and not the software of the iPhone.. So....

Just wait a few weeks. After the iPhone announcement, we will all be preparing for the Mac refresh and after that the iPad refresh and after that the MacBook refresh... Repeat.

Phones are bigger news and there are more users, so it's only logical that the majority here discusses mobile devices. Maybe Macrumors should create a more divided portal with mobile entrances and mac entrances.

So I suppose everyone[including Apple] who called the iPhone 4S the.. Well.. iPhone 4S were wrong when it was clearly the iPhone 5?

//People who can't accept that names don't have to follow numerical order.
It of course doesn't matter at all which generation this is, but still... The iPhone 5 is the sixth iPhone generation. Don't confuse iPhone generations with brand names. Apple doesn't name them by the generation; if they did, the 3G would certainly not have been called the 3G. It was called that because... It had 3G. The names have nothing to do with generations. 4 because 4 is the number after 3, which was used in the 3GS. By coincidence this was also the fourth generation.

1: iPhone, 2: 3G, 3: 3GS, 4: 4, 5: 4S... 5: Yup, sixth.

It's really not rocket science. If counting otherwise, you need to define what is a "generation". I use the term for "a new iPhone". Not how great it was compared to the past, because that is purely subjective.

This is the way its gona be.

iPhone 2012:

Backside Printed Name : iPhone
Apple Website URL Name: www.apple.com/iphone
Apple Marketing Name: The New iPhone
Community name: "iPhone 5"
Geek Names: 6th Generation iPhone, Unibody iPhone, iPhone LTE

I used to think attempting to shrink the SIM card further was silly, but it takes up a significant amount of room on that board.
