I tried so hard to like the 12" MacBook, even tried a few models. I saw that damn spinning beachball just launching word.
I get that on my quad-core 2017 iMac Core i5-7600 with 1 TB SSD and 24 GB RAM.

Blame MS Office.

That said, the 2017 model MacBooks are considerably faster than the 2015 models, and have a better keyboard too. And the 2017s have the 16 GB option. So, it partially depends on which models you tested.

I get that, but wouldn't topping out the Air put it at the same level as a 13" Pro?? At that point, you're almost splitting hairs (unless Apple would make a bigger SSD, or some other differentiator, standard)
The Air has a 10 Watt CPU, the 13” four Thunderbolt port uses 28W CPUs. There’s a big difference in performance.

I could have sworn Kuo said it’s going to be a 14” display, though. eta: I see that’s addressed in the article.

There is no connector in the laptops. SSD is soldered.

I’m hoping for 6 core 32GB 14” but am expecting top tier to be 4 core 32GB :(
There could be a 6 core CPU if they use Comet Lake CPUs like the i7 10710u but I would expect the i7 1068G7 instead.

I could see going to a 14", and then having the MBA fill the gap of the old 12" MacBook. 13.3 is a bit close to the MBP though, but I guess it's about more features/power/ports on the 14" than screen size difference.

I fully endorse this rumour. My 2013 13" rMPB is now 77 months old. I bought it to replace my 2007 15" MBP which was also 77 months old at the time (and is still working to this day and being used by my son).
Wifi 6 and 32GB will seal the deal.
WiFi 6 I doubt will be there, it wasn’t on the 16”. But who knows. 32GB is a definite yes. The 128GB SSD capacity on the $1,299 base model will increase to 256GB, hopefully the 256GB—>512GB. New keyboard of course.

I was hoping they would push it back to end of the year for Tiger Lake with its beefy iGPU.

Releasing another 13" before the inevitable 14" would be the dumbest thing they could possibly do. Who, except for people who absolutely HAVE to buy a new laptop, would buy that thing?

Too bad I can't wait, got myself a refurbished MBP 16. New keyboard, bigger display, faster CPU. I was tempted by the new Air but once I updated RAM and storage it wasn't that cheaper compared to the refurbished 16 and I get a better display, better thermals and faster CPU.
A 14'' MBP would have been the sweet spot, but I need the new laptop now. Too bad they didn't launch it alongside the Air last month

Footprint will be similar to the 3rd gen MBA 13 pro.

Offerings will be similar to the current lineup:
- all models to feature touch bar
- base models with 2 USB c and quad core ice lake processors.
- higher range models with 4 USB c and hexa core comet lake. Will feature discrete graphics for the first time in over a decade.

The specs for this new laptop seem fairly easy to predict based on what Intel has available and what Apple has been doing with its other laptops:

4 core 8 thread 25W or 28W Ice Lake CPU
Iris Plus graphics
Slightly better battery life
14 inch screen primarily through thinner bezels
4 TB Ports (2 port model dropped as the i5 quad-core Air covers that market segment)
512GB Base SSD (4TB Max)
16 GB Base Ram (32 Max)

Features borrowed from 16 inch:
'Magic keyboard'
Better speakers and microphones
Some kind of % 'increased thermal performance'

If they drop the base 2TB port model, I think the above means a $100 increase on current 4TB model pricing, or perhaps prices stay the same if I am wrong and they keep the base RAM at 8GB.

I fear there will be no material feature improvements, such as FaceID, 5G, webcam resolution, haptic touch bar, NFC, AR, etc.

Jon doesn’t have any links with Apple
He claims to have sources inside and outside of Apple. He’s been calling it the iPhone 9, but in the next breath says he never said it was going to be called the 9.

But I guess all of his sources inside and outside Apple have been calling it iPhone 9. Weird.

Apple doesn't have removable storage, everything and I mean everything is glued or soldered

That's because Apple employees deliberately use a proprietary connector that soldered to the storage. The M.2 form factor connector can be used for user-replaceable and offer performance improvements down the road for the customers that desire to upgrade from another vendor.

Wasn’t on the 16 inch because the CPUs didn’t support it.

There’s more differences than hardware specs, such as touch bar, thunderbolt ports, CPU series (that needs different cooling methods), display, etc. I get what you mean though but I think this approach they are taking now is better :)

Sorry for waking you up from your sweet dreams, but $1299 is the exact price of a MacBook Air i5 256GB 16GB, no way the Pro will cost the same as the Air. Add $200 to that price.

There might be a price drop for the MBA like cost $100 less for upgrading the RAM and it's not a big deal.
