So you’re ok with this? I am not and the only recourse I have is not to buy it.

Are you 12? You're purposely misunderstanding my point
Err....yeah, more phones for the rest of us? Doesn’t affect me, meanwhile I’ll continue to enjoy my phone regardless

I was reading this thread, and liking/disliking some of the posts when it hit me. This whole thread is ridiculous.

The iPhone is a device that needs to be charged in order to work. It should be included in the box. Citing environmental reasons that people already have chargers etc. is just making excuses for a company that considers itself a boutique brand, but is nickel and diming its customers.

Put a damn charger in the box. This is one case where thinking outside the box is just not good old fashioned common sense. If this rumor is true, I believe it’s going to hurt Apple’s image no matter how they try and spin it.

The next time I buy a winter coat, I hope they include a hood. Maybe when Coach sells briefcases, they should sell the shoulder strap separately. Shoes? I have shoelaces from another pair I can use.

Okay. I’m done.

Edit: Fixed typo.

No charger with iPod, AirPods, Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad.

I bought a pair of Sony headphones that only came with a cable. My Kindle came with with nothing.

This isn’t new. I’m not sure why it’s a huge deal all of a sudden?

It’s really dumb, but it’s not a big deal.

Sticking to my theory:

Baby steps to acclimate users. When the iPhone goes portless, I could see Apple shipping the phone and nothing else (except maybe some legally requires disclosure stuff).

I have no problem if they leave out the Ear Pods and the charger. But the price of the phone needs to be adjusted if
they leave out $29 headphones and the $19 charger.
If we go down that path, other phone makers have raised the price of 5G phones by $100, so Apple can claim it’s a fair trade off. I do still hope they let you get a free or heavily discounted charger when you order a phone, if you want one. So they can reduce waste (I personally don’t need one) so I could do with one less charger and earPods left in the box till I trade in my phone, and several others gathering dust.

The earbuds I understand, but selling an electronic device without a way to charge it included in the box makes no sense to me.
It does have a way to charge it: a Lightning to USB cable. USB ports are all over the place these days. Arguably they’re more universal than AC plugs, since those vary from one country to the next. If you don’t have a USB port handy, you can opt for the AC-to-USB adapter that is appropriate for your particular country.

I think the right way to do this properly is to offer either a discount on a charger within say x weeks of buying a new phone, or straight up offering chargers for a very low price. So it's not as big a slap as you first think.

It just hurts those moving to Apple for the first time, when they are the people you want to deliver the "wow" to!

Agree. I expect some kind of bundling. Which would you prefer: earpods in the box; or a coupon you could exchange for either free earpods or $20 off any Apple headphone product?

Again, this is a good place for a coupon bundle.

Getting an iPhone without a charger is like getting steak without sauce.

Since I don't put sauce on my steak, and I don't know anyone who does, this sounds fine to me.

I find it shocking the amount of commenters that think its acceptable for Apple to remove EarPods and the charger from the included accessories.

The news item says nothing about the included accessories. Just what's "in the box". Two different things.

As will the iPhone, just no brick

Why are you so excited to not get a charger with new phones?? You just seem pumped by the idea

Unlike the peripherals, an iPhone can't be charged by a computer port, it feeds 2.5watts, half of what the small 5w brick does. Unless you're plugged into a T3 port and I highly doubt apple will be including usb-c to lighting cables

You sell a device that needs to be recharged, you include the charger. I don't understand how you aren't seeing the logic in that.

I don’t know anything about this law, but in your quote it doesn’t say anything about it having to be included, so as long as Apple sells EarPods it seems to be something still true.

Boy, I guess this really emphasizes that a document can be read multiple ways. I would agree with the interpretation of the original poster. In order to "market" the device, it has to contain an accessory to keep the device away from your head. Time will tell.

I don't know what you are talking about. I have an iPhone X and a 2019 iMac. It charges just fine from the USB ports.

So do you offer to buy iPhone together with iMac? Really?

LOL, every time I see an Apple news update like this I feel so sorry for the lack of press for Samsung...

Samsung - "Our next phones will feature time travel!"
Press - meh

Apple - "Our next phones will not include chargers so we can make the boxes exquisite and thin!"
Press - OMFG! This is aaaahhhhhhmmmmmaaaaaaazzzzzzing!!!!

Android charger works with iphone.

Are you an iPhone user? Android devices have a different connection type. A charger is a charger but the connection is different.

It is easier for anyone new to iPhone if the box has a charger and better-than-nothing wired ear buds. Maybe 1st gen wireless AirPods in the box would be more enticing.

Apple, imo, wouldn't do that. Airpods are too valuable a commodity.

Please quantify for all us the exact nature of the environmental impact that it will have.

- By slimming down the packaging and reducing the gross weight and shipping dimensions, fewer resources are allegedly needed to ship them, saving Apple a lot of money. Can you provide the exact details on the amount of fuel not burned because of this (and proof that this will actually be the case and not just negated by other transport practices) and then also the direct environmental impact from that exact reduction in emissions? I'd be interested to see how this would amount to something in the face of China outdoing the entire world on emissions 1000x over.

- Can you share specific details on exactly how many chargers and EarPods are discarded every year due to the specific reason that the person doesn't need them? From that, can you provide the specific environmental impact details that from number of discarded chargers and EarPods? That will be fascinating too considering most people do not throw away brand new things, and instead hold on to them for the future, or give them to people who need them, or sell them.

...or are you just doing what everyone else is doing and guessing that there must be SOME environmental impact even if you cannot possibly comprehend or codify it. Yeah, that's what I thought.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed!

You're correct. I have not done massive amounts of research in to the environmental impact of producing 100m less phone accessories every year and roughly halving the size of the box shipped around the world. I assumed it would be substantial, but clearly I was wrong.

I should not comment on stories on a forum with my opinion in future.

Now carry on with your day...

That’s right! I demand another charger to put unused into the drawer with its brethren!
It’s odd you would throw a charger that’s way better than your current one in the draw, would be like saying if Apple gave you free AirPods you would throw it in the draw cause you already have EarPods.

I really hope they don't go for the words "exquisite thinner box" when they're announcing it on stage.

hopefully they say something more tactful and less pretentious

"you'll see a new design for our packaging due to less content inside, helping us preserve resources and enforce our commitment to the environment, while still maintaining our aesthetic."

If i hold a pencil in mid-air and then drop it, i can be sure that it will fall to the ground at SOME rate, even if i cannot quantify it.

Uhh that rate is called gravity, which is pretty easy to quantify....

...what’s wrong with your computer’s USB port? Is it USB 1.0 or something? What in the world do you mean it can’t charge an iPhone?
