second side note: so happy for the Lakers. As much as it hurts to watch them play in front of a fake crowd, they honored Kobe the only way he would want to be honored — by winning. RIP, Mamba, little Mamba, and everyone else who passed away in that crash. Isn’t it crazy that when that happened, a lot of us expected that to be the most tragic thing that would happen in 2020?

Great stuff. I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Lakers and had the pleasure of watching Kareem and Magic as a young boy play in the Forum with my Dad and I’ve loved them ever since. I’ve been a Season ticket holder for years and while it gutted me not being there to watch them win it, it gave me an immense satisfaction with all the organization has been through this year.

It was a devastating loss not just for Lakers fans, but for people everywhere when an icon tragically dies, and it compounded it 10000000X with sweet Gigi also being killed. As a Lakers fan we’ve been blessed with many championships, but this was one of the most rewarding ones that we’ve had in a long long time.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about a new iPhone anymore? Its always the same.
- Faster CPU
- Better camera
- Better Battery-life

...I think I am gonna be stuck with my 10S Max for a long time.
We’re reaching the limit of what phones can achieve. There’s really only so much they can do. But it’s funny you don’t care about a new iPhone, yet are literally the SECOND person to comment on the article. Seems like you care a lot lol

I've liked the idea of going back to the iPhone 4/5 square sided design ever since it was first rumoured but of all the other leaks these ones, if true, would have pretty much all been small but nice surprises when I watched tomorrow's launch event...

I like FaceID already but faster (even closer to instantaneous) is always better so that's of value to me.

I was bracing myself for battery life improvements to stagnate with the 12, especially given a rumour a month or so ago that a 12 Pro Max battery had been spotted and it was slightly lower capacity than the one in the 11 Pro Max. If this rumour is true that the batteries are really "getting about 10% larger" (not sure how that tallies with rumours that the Max models are getting slightly thinner but I'll be glad if its true) and "at least an 1 hour battery life increase for the Pro Models" which given the big screen models have tended to get more gains than the smaller screen models for the last couple of years might mean maybe +2 hours or (dreaming) more for the 12 Pro Max especially if 5G is kept disabled. If that is what is delivered tomorrow I'll be relieved and, if not as ecstatic as I was when the 5 hour increase was announced last year for the 11 Pro Max, still pretty damn happy.

"... significantly improved digital zoom via software enhancements, and the ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro Max will also benefit from improved optical zoom" - we already knew about the higher factor optical zoom, and I assume that is the improvement being talked about, but high zoom is important to me so that rumour of significantly improved digital zoom on top of the optical zoom improvements is exciting to me as well.

For what I care about it seems as if, after the initial leaks on screen sizes and square edges ages ago, the rumour mill had saved the best for last. I do hope that specifically the three rumours above turn out to be true. Unless Apple disappoints tomorrow I'm getting a 12 Pro Max anyway because I need more storage capacity on my device and if the rumours above are true it looks as if Apple definitely won't disappoint me tomorrow.

Yes i do.

also, 5G is not available in most places.

It’s actually available in a lot of places already, and it’s only at the very beginning of its lifecycle. That being said, I have a feeling that it will never reach the same coverage levels that 4G/LTE did. Hell, there are still big chunks of the US that don’t have LTE, or they only have it through one carrier.

I know that where I grew up, 1 1/2 hours outside of Pittsburgh, you either use Verizon or Straight Talk on Verizons network, or you might as well not even own a smartphone. I went back home to visit two summers ago, and I had to buy a freaking straight talk iPhone 5s and pay for a months worth of service, just to have a working phone. My T-Mobile iPhone was basically a prop for 2 weeks. Then when I got back to Austin and tried to sell it...eek. the whole situation was a nightmare.

This is one of the things that urks me about 5G — progress is great, sure, but I hope they don’t forget about and give up on giving rural areas solid 4G/LTE coverage. I would love to be able to add my mother to my plan, on a second line, and get her a nice, new iPhone 12. But she needs something that has consistent coverage.

Who knows, maybe the Sprint merger will make a difference. I hope so.

Hmmm same feeling as I was expecting 14’’ mbp mini led, I guess my XS max will last one extra year...

5G chips still use too much energy, no super coverage even if I live in Switzerland where they converted 4G to 5G

Non 120Hz... sorry but this is a big no...

I hate having to keep repeating this, but where are you getting the idea that 5G uses more “energy?“ And by energy, do you mean battery power?

Also, I’d put money down that the majority of us don’t use our phones outside of wifi that much, especially now. Maybe the commute to work (if you’re not working from home), running errands, going for a walk or jog.

I know that early LTE android phones were battery draining monsters. But by the time Apple added LTE in the iPhone 5, it was widespread enough, and the software was polished enough, to not make any noticeable difference in battery life from the 4S.

So..i'm and old guy...62 and not all that techy. I HAVE to get a new phone now, because I just upgraded my watch to the new iwatch6 w/cellular. My current iphone is a 6plus...so it will NOT work with my new watch. I read a lot on my phone, so a bigger screen would be nice. I can get the 6.1 inch Pro and enjoy a bigger screen than I have now in a smaller size phone....OR, I can get the huge iphone12ProMax. Iy will probably be one of those. I might say no to the MAX, simply because I'll have to wait longer it looks like. Perhaps the common sense compromise would be the 6.1 inch pro. I bet it will be a good upgrade to my perfect condition but now outdated iphone6+

So, my old man rant is that NONE of the iwatches really tell you when you forgot your phone at home. Yes, there is a little red phone picture on the watch, but you never see it until it is too late. This is the reason I'm getting the cellular one this time. The !@#$$% iwatch tells you when to breathe but not when you left your phone at home. Sigh.

So...is it better to buy right from Apple as soon as you can order, or buy it at Verizon? I'll probably take both the new phone and new iwatch to verizon or Apple store by appt and just say, "Make it all work"

If the wait between the two is not too much, I either get the 6.1 inch for the reasons stated above, or spurge on the 6.7 MaxPro....since it is only a tad larger than what I'm currently used to with a WAY bigger screen. Having 3 lenses has to be better than what I have now. I never thought i'd pay $1000 for a phone, but when I keep them 5 years, it really is not a big deal. I can write it off. From what most of you say, I am more than justified upgrading from a 6plus....

Sorry for my long post. I envy most all of you who know so much more about this stuff than I do. Thank you.
Agree, no matter which type of watch, I wish there was a choice to turn on a audible warning/notification on both devices for when you go out of range of the other. Especially if you left your phone sit somewhere other than home.

I’ve never had a cable fray and Ive never lost or broken headphones.
👍 Nice! I'm in the same boat as you as I take care to pull the cables out by the solid ends (and not the cable itself which I'm sure most people do that end up breaking them).

But I will say from personal experience that having an extra set of headphones for travel is nice (especially since one of the pairs has a broken volume button), and the charging cable that I had been using for ~2 years just up and quit on me. So it saved me the ($whatever$) it would have cost to buy and new cable.

Also, I had a brick die on me after years of use, so having a backup in an old iphone box was nice.

Just saying ;)

The more I read about the 12, the more I want to hang onto my 11 Pro Max until next fall.

Hell yeah, do it! You still have an amazing phone, and it’ll still be leaps and bounds faster than any Android phone coming out this year. I had the exact same phone, and the only reason I sold it is because I need a smaller phone because of Carpal tunnel reasons.

Hold onto it until next fall, and the resale value will still be great, unless you beat the **** out of the thing. If you have applecare on it, you could even bash it, go in and pay the applecare replacement fee, and get it swapped with a shiny new replacement right before selling it.

I am already disappointed the mini isn't a pro model. If it's any spec less than the base iPhone than as far as I see it Apple fails to see what people have been asking for.

I have to agree with you on this. It sucks to choose a size that you don’t want in order to get the features that you want. For example.. the max is rumored to have much better camera improvements than the other sizes. If true, I’m going to have to get it, even though I don’t want that huge of a phone. And there seems to be a ton of people wanting the mini/se... without having to accept it being essentially a year or two year old phone tech.

I would have updated just to have Touch ID. In the mask world we live in its ridiculous Apple hasn't implemented this. There is no excuse outside of pure laziness to not do it.

Probably greed too. I mean, this feature would have been, no pun intended, a killer feature in 2020.

That’s a lot of nice circles on the graph, but if you actually notice they don’t make coverage maps that actually show geographic coverage. In the US, the number of customers with access to 5g is a tiny fraction of those who can get LTE. And mmwave is essentially non existent except for a few blocks here and there.

Open a pure black screen on both. Watch a movie w/ a lot of shadows and dark shots, like any of the Batman movies. Those are two examples, I’m sure there are many more.

But, I kinda get what you’re saying: I don’t really mind LCD screens if they’re top notch screens, like the ones Apple uses. I think my 12.9’ iPad screen is downright beautiful. if I had to go back to an LCD iPhone, I wouldn‘t care that much. The only product that is a definite OLED or no buy for me is smartwatches. LCD smartwatches look awful.

It's not necessarily the question of technology but of implementation and quality. Most of LCDs on phones are super poor but OLED is not that far behind in crap quality either. Here is the example how two are incomparable, year 2018 i have both Sony XZ2 and iPhone X. Both have super rich blacks, Android bottom bar is pitch black no difference whatsoever when you turn off the screen or when screen is on. That's because Sony usez true 10bit IPS panel that costs as much as iPhone screen to replace if you break it. On the other hand iPhone X had very noticeable PWM and in order to get rid of ot i had to crank up the brightness to eye bleeding level and white was shifting from warm to cool but it was a good dislay. Now take what Samsung was doing in 2018 with that horrid S9 display that was over saturated, wasnt color accurate, shifted the whole screen from gold to turquoise on a slightest tilt. That was utter junk of a dislay but that did not stop most of the tech blogs to call it a quality display simply because it was OLED and technology was thriving.

Samsung got their displays right only on S10. Note 10 still had crap display btw.

Reasons why manufacturers have shifted to OLED is price and less complexity for them to integrate it into chassis compared to comparable quality LCD like IGZO from Sharp.

Pentile OLED, the only type of OLED in mobile industry, has a really bad subpixel density and DPI is not comparable to rgbw LCD and neither is resolution. Manufacturers only simplify it for the sake of marketing. It takes 4K pentile OLED screen to have a DPI of FullHD LCD screen across the same display area. Completely funky.

I am looking forward to the event. I already have the iPhone 11 and am pretty happy with it. Even if Apple has 5G the reports in my area is that it is equal to 4G LTE, so I won't be upgrading for 5G. I am a winnable customer if there are more features introduced that have not been covered by the rumors (USB-C, Touch ID, or some other unknown feature I didn't know I needed).

What iPhones are running snapdragon 800 series processors?

And that article states that manufacturers are increasing battery sizes to combat any extra drain that 5G may cause, so at least they’re not ignoring it.

I might be wrong — hey, I’m wrong a lot, and I’ll own up to it when proven wrong — but I can‘t see Apple releasing a 5G phone without ensuring that it’s battery life is on par with previous iPhones.

But I am curious about this, so today I’m going to charge my One Plus 8 to 100% and only use it on 5G for 24 hours straight. I’ll let it get down to 5% before I charge it. Then tomorrow I’ll do the same with Wifi only.

I know, I know — this isn’t anywhere near a real study; it’s a sample size of one, and I’m not going to watch youtube the same amount of hours or spend the same amount of time on reddit on both days. But I’m going to do it, because I’m curious, and because I’m bored.

Wish me some friendly good luck!

The more I read about the 12, the more I want to hang onto my 11 Pro Max until next fall.

Here is another thing that should weigh into everyone's decision. The iphone 12 is most likely using Qualcomms 2019 5G modem, which is actually missing quite a few features. Their new X60 will be released in a few months, and that has a range of new features for 5G, like actually being able to place calls via 5G. Or being able to combine lower and higher-band 5G frequencies.

I never said the battery life would be worse. I said the increased battery size is to help with the 5G drain and that I doubt there would be an increase in the 12’s battery life and that it would more than likely be the same as previous models.

Again, this is the Qualcomm first generation chipset which everyone knew was awful, and the reason that Apple delayed 5g.

Again, you have no idea how well the iPhone 12 will handle 5G and its impact on its battery life. I think it will be equal to the 11, but don’t think we will see an improvement because the larger battery is meant to offset the 5G drain and keep battery life in line with previous models.

This is an article from May about 5G. Pretty much, don’t expect much from 5G right now and I suspect, that 6 months since the article date, the situation is pretty much the same.

So I guess any case would have to have a cutout around the power button so the user could access it with their finger. I don't see this happening. The buttons on iPhones are very short and unobtrusive. Any thin case makes them almost disappear. Any thicker case that gives good protection has the buttons covered.

Most cases have a cutout for the Ring/Still switch too. And there is still FaceID too.

Of course I'd also be happy if they could make it work to have TouchID under the screen.

Leaker Max Weinbach has today shared new "finalized and revised" information about the upcoming iPhone 12 via his Twitter account @PineLeaks.

iphone-12-colors.jpg

Weinbach states that the "most important things" about the new iPhones were already revealed by Chinese Weibo user "Kang" via an extensive leak on Friday, but he does offer some specific new information.

Apple is reportedly still intending to ship the "dynamic zoning algorithm" feature, which could allow for faster Face ID. The notch may only be reduced in width on the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini due to its smaller size. This would be achieved by arranging the components of the TrueDepth camera system more "tightly," but at the cost of increasing its height. Alleged images of the iPhone 12 mini's screen emerged in July, which seemed to show a smaller notch.

Weinbach believes that all iPhone 12 models will gain significantly improved digital zoom via software enhancements, and the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will also benefit from improved optical zoom.

There may also be "a sort of macro camera" feature and the ultrawide lens aperture on Pro models may also be able to get closer to subjects, although these are not expected to be headline features. The ultrawide lens is also speculated to have up to a 35% larger aperture to improve low-light performance.

The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are claimed to have a boost of at least one hour to battery life, but the iPhone 12 mini's battery life is expected to perform worse than the iPhone 11 due to its size.

Weinbach also reinforced previous claims about iPhone 12 models likely supporting 4K video at 120 or 240 frames per second.

The report is apparently based on recent updates from sources that were received over the past three weeks. The iPhone 12 lineup is almost certain to be revealed on Tuesday at Apple's "Hi, Speed" event.

So they are still testing the Pro Max? These aren’t going to be ready in a few weeks...I’m still saying Dec
