64GB is just fine as a starting point for basic model. I never went over 55GB on my 1st gen SE, that's with latest half year of my photos/videos locally, a lot of music and more apps that I actually need. After subscribing to Apple Music and a little bit of "optimisation" of apps, I'm currently on 40GB. With cloud photos I might even manage with 32 GB model, but that would be really pushing the limits and not worth it.

Anyway, 50$ extra for 128 is IMO fair price, if you really need it. For expensive pro models it is definitely correct that they start with at least 128.

I guess it isn't too bad for the jump. However, basically any phone that isn't a "budget" phone offers more storage at the beginning levels. 128 seems to be the min.

64gb? abysmal
Sometimes, I really feel Apple makes phone in these sizes to serve as phone for companies to hand out- like an on-call phone, or stock phone with not much on it, nor room for it. But hey, it’s an iPhone, right? 🙃

Uggg, early November on the Pro models?

My iPhone X just died after I got stuck in a thunderstorm this weekend for an hour, now I'm trying to figure out how to survive without buying a new phone I that is outdated until the iPhone 12 Pro comes out.... over a month is going to be really hard.... So much for Apple's water resistance.

I'm always amused by the people who come into these threads to use case shame those who need the minimum/maximum storage available. Some people like small, empty closets; some people like big, overstuffed closets. A good product is going to account for realistic edge cases and find the sweet spot for most users, which still seems to be in the 64-126GB range, despite 4K video and free-range photo streams.

I'm happy to have a 512GB phone/iPad, and I'll soon upgrade to 1TB models. My media collection is expansive, and when not in lockdown, like to go places that don't have cellular service, much less WiFi. But just because I enjoy being off the grid doesn't mean I enjoy being without my music or a large enough selection of movies to find something that matches my current mood. This is what works for me, and Apple gives me the space to use my devices as I see fit.

I'd much rather debate why Apple continues to charge such premium prices for storage upgrades.

Yes, but not always or for all models. I was going to buy a Xr, but the unlocked version wasn’t available at release, so I went with the Xs which was. Some times they make you wait and other times it is available. I think they try to base it on estimated demand.
Thanks for the info. I'm hopeful the iPhone mini will be available unlocked at launch.

I just took a quick look at unlocked iPhone 11's on Swappa. Out of 75 available for sale 53, or 70%, are 64 GB storage.

This is just a single data point, but it lends credibility to the idea that a majority of people don't value higher storage enough to justify the higher price.

The carrier specific units follow a similar trend with AT&T being the outlier. With 25 phones listed for sale 11 are 64 GB (44%), 13 are 128 GB (52%) and one is 256 GB (4%). I wonder if AT&T was running a special at some point.

"...a majority of people don't value higher storage enough to justify the higher price."

That's an interesting way of interpreting the data.

It's also entirely possible that the reason there are so many 64GB iPhone 11's for sale on Swappa is because people thought 64GB would be enough, but it wasn't and they're being sold because they were replaced with larger capacity iPhone 11's

The 64GB is the most popular because it’s the most affordable and people put up with the inconvenience I would say. It’s why every year they are more widely available on selling sites and for the same reason after launch the higher storage tiers are easier to obtain. The chances are people are selling their 11’s now because the 12 is yet to be unveiled therefore they will sell for slightly more now than in 3 weeks time.

64GB base storage for the iPhone 12? That is pretty crap and Apple have no excuse in 2020 to be pulling that sort of con. Disappointing if true and seeing as it’s Prosser, it probably isn’t.

don’t disagree as he is a bit hit and miss, but in this case other more reputable leakers have also suggested it starts with 64gb for non-pro models

Phones have now gotten to where Computers got to 15 years ago
Its very hard to impress, because the technology is established and just small incremental tweaks.

I’m impressed by how powerful they are but Apple seems to hold back some of the little additions like this one, storage. They’ve always been a little behind when following the crowd but I think we are ready for a bigger memory card in 2020 lol.

The technology is mature I agree and the smartphone race of 2007 to 2015 is perhaps the like we’ll never see again. I just think as upgrade figures have been rapidly shrinking in the past 5 years, they could just offer a little to keep it interesting.

I remember when Kuo was the most polarizing person for leaks, now it’s Prosser. I’m not here everyday like I used to be, so has he redeemed himself or is he still inadvertently helping Apple leakers to get caught and fired?

I don’t see anything about the Pro Max version either.

He’s been chucking rumours out there and then justifying why it’s wrong when contradicted by another leaker lol. I appreciate these guys are desperate for Twitter and YouTube hits, but all they’ve been good for is hype and disappointment so far.

last year i got the Xs Max 256 GB to save a few $s... i still have over half my storage space, even with tons of apps/games installed :) hopefully though apple can get rid of 64GB option and make all base models 128GB.

64GB is a hate crime when SSD terabytes are selling for less than a $100....

It's not only media and sometimes it can't be avoided. Especially when you are concerned about privacy and personal property of digital goods (recommended read on that: "The End of Ownership: Personal Property in the Digital Economy"). Not everyone is using another ones PC (aka. cloud) to store their data.

My chat history alone is taking up 40 GB of storage on my device. Most of it is photos (high res at 40-60MP) and video messages (some in 4k), but I only clean up the chat history once a year and offload that media and the messages to my backup. With this alone a 64 GB iPhone wouldn't be enough. Could I keep this much lower? Yes. Do I want to do the cleanup to cold storage every month? No, as I still need access to the history even weeks or months later.

My iTunes library of just the selected tracks needs another 30 GB (it is another 100 GB on my external disk). I am not streaming music, as I own my music and only have 3 GB of data available. And I want to have the ones that I regularly listen to available anywhere I go. Same for the audiobooks I still want to listen to.

Offline navigation requires another 5 GB just for the maps in my most traveled regions. When travelling to other countries this can increase.

Everything else is caches (probably about 50-100 MB per app?) and system memory (which is already 13 GB). Photos is just 1 GB, but this changes during vacations as I download photo from my camera every now and then that need about 30 MB per photo.

And that brings me already rather close to 128 GB. And it is always good to have a decent amount of space left for additional storage needs and iOS updates.

How about me? I have over 80 gb music and no intention of ever subscribing to a streaming service. What I want to point out is that not everybody is like YOU (or me). I wish people will stop treating others like idiots, with stupid generalisations. Yes I bloody well know there is something called iCloud storage but it does not solve my problem now. Does it?

Just collating some good responses to the "why do you need more than 64GB?" rhetoric. I'm use a 64GB S9 and thank goodness that a 128GB SD card was one of freebies they threw in at the time of purchase. I keep my phone storage usage under 50GB to let Android run smoothly; even so, 128GB would be the minimum I'd want in an iPhone as I plan to hold on to it for a while. It's fine to question something, but to downright dismiss people wanting more storage is quite another.

Yeah, he was annoyingly entertaining initially, but now it seems like he's been throwing things out there to see what sticks lately.

You only store it on Dropbox? What happens if Dropbox dies one day, or you lose account access? Crazy to think that you only store it in the cloud and only 1 location..

I store on the phone, locally, cloud & offsite..
I’m interested to know what you store. I use 3 storage points including my phone. The argument about Dropbox is neither here nor there? Dropbox suddenly dies and no one has access to their files? Really? And anyone relying on Dropbox for full storage probably knows more about logins/passwords/recovery than you’re insinuating.

My photos over the last 4 years take less than 10gb. Yes, I have kids. I’ve only used 64gb iPhones and my current usage is 38gb. Lots of folks are fine with 64gb - Apple knows this because they sell the most phones in that configuration.

As someone with a 1st Generation iPhone SE that's deal with a one-hour battery life, I know that feel.

I almost broke down and bought a 2nd Generation iPhone SE to hold me over, but we're less than two weeks away from an announcement, so I gotta stay strong.

VERY wishful thinking.Expect it to cost $100 for 128 on all non-Pro devices.

Apple only charges $50 for their “low cost” items like iPhone SE and iPad Cheap.

As usual though, I’m happy to be wrong and will certainly eat my hat if they give us 128 base on every single model.

Completely as expected. Whoever wants 128GB can get that for $50. I’d guess at least 50% will buy the 64GB, and not to save $50; they simply don’t need more.
Yea at if this is true for once it will double to each tier instead of 4x then 2x so you have to pay even more for crazy storage markups. That's what was nice about when my wife got the XR; they didn't have 64GB, so it was only $50 more instead of $150. Our device dollars covered the extra.

Even in general, what could you invent anymore that would be groundbreaking. The only thing I can think of is getting colonies on The Moon/Mars, and getting mass transit spaceships. Or teleporting or time travel which are probably impossible

Oh yeah, let's keep the 64GB train rolling in 2020. The Bean Counters sure love this storage capacity and are pouring beer for their lost 32GB homie.
