Not sure if max overall range has been leaked/rumored yet, but it should be better than Bluetooth if the signal is unobstructed in an outdoor area.

Airtags will really shine in a dense urban environment with lots of iOS devices present; this is where the distributed mesh network will really come into play. This is new/different - this has shades of what Steve Jobs was dreaming of a decade ago with a distributed Apple Cellular network. Obviously this isn't that, but it's the first baby step towards something like that in the future. Give it another decade, and we may see another step.

UWB is huge, I don't think many people understand how ground breaking this protocol will be. This is the first new product from Apple that I am really excited for since the initial release of Airplay.

No. Ovals are not square.

Ovals are also not triangles. Ovals are also not the Queen of England. And most importantly, ovals are also not as tall as they are wide. If they were, they'd be a circle and have a single "diameter" rather than a width and length.

Here you go :)
The nearest UK coin is the £2 coin at 28.5mm diameter and 2.5mm thick, so at 32mm by 6mm, the airtags are slightly bigger according to the rumour. Having said that it’s smaller than the Tile Pro, which is 42mm by 6.5mm, though that has a replaceable battery which will increase thickness while it isn’t clear what kind of battery airbags has. For those wondering if they’ll be too big, I’ve been using various Tiles on my house keys key ring since they came out and currently use a Tile Pro and has never been a problem - well apart from the rate that the Pro goes through batteries.

"slightly larger than a 50 cent coin"

I am assuming this is a 50 cent US coin, but there are many around the world so I'm assuming my assumption is correct.

I was hoping it'd be $29 including the Apple premium... but I guess $39 makes sense because I think I'm still willing to fork over $39.

Can anyone translate that size (50 cent) into British coins? Is it roughly the same as a 50p?
The 50p coin is 27.3 mm in diameter so the Airtag is a smidge larger.

How long does the battery last in current products that are out there? Is the battery replaceable or the tag rechargeable?

If the price is accurate that's mildly surprising, would make them only a shade more expensive than the Pro-level Tile, which is presumably where these would be competing rather than with the entry-level. Though I suppose there's a limit on how high they can price these and still have them hold any appeal; if you're paying $50+ for a thing that helps you find something, the value of that thing has to be pretty high to begin with ...
I’m waiting to see if they will be battery replaceable or not w that price tag.

Tile lasts around a year before you change the battery yourself which is either 1632 or 2032 on the newer models.

Not sure how many people have actually owned/use Tiles here, but I think Apple also needs to consider matching/beating the ReTile program too. Excluding any major sales, I found the ReTile program ended up giving me a decent deal for an older non-replaceable battery version in the past.

It was reported some time ago.

If a tag wich is not yours will follow you too long (their algorithm, probably taking buses, etc. under consideration) you will have an alert on your iPhone to disable this tag.
Interesting and thanks for the info. I still wonder what exactly would be this safety mechanism (how long etc). I also wonder how legislation will be impacted by this. Time will tell.

I'm not at all interested in using these to find something I lost.

I am very interested in being notified on my phone about things (they're attached to) that move, and what their spatial positioning accuracy, both relative and absolute, is. And of course their battery life, whether a replaceable or rechargeable battery is used.

$200 to track five things in my house? I was hoping for better. Plus, larger than a .50 cent piece is pretty big. Bigger than some of the things I want to track.

Hmmm...
My thoughts too. I got a couple of Tile Pro's kind of cool, but they are only useful in the house kind of. Since they are bluetooth they a limited range. That seems like a like of money/inconvenience to find something in the house. Unless for my keys are they are always in my pocket.

For a website that’s so global you ain’t half American-ist. I have ZERO idea how big a “half dollar piece” is. So still very much in the dark.
That's where this bit of the article comes in.

"According to Weinbach, the AirTags will come in one size measuring 32mm x 32mm x 6mm, which would put the circular devices in the same ballpark diameter-wise as a half dollar piece"

Why don't you just google what the dimensions of a US 50 cent piece is, and then google the size coins of whatever your country uses, and then compare?
