Quick, somewhat unrelated question: is everyone else here still able to see L0vetodream's tweets, since they're mentioned here? It says that his tweets are protected for me - not sure if he blocked me or what.
I think he went private. Same for me as well.

Yes, and whether these are rechargeable batteries or you need to change them. I tried one of these accessories a few years ago and was extremely disappointed: the battery didn't last more than a month, so it made the whole thing pointless when you a trying to locate your thing and it doesn't work.

I'm expecting Apple to release higher quality products. If I can use my MagSafe charger or any other Qi charger with that, and get notifications on my devices when these tags need to be recharged, that would be nice.
This is what I’m hoping for.

Even Apple wouldn’t know that at this stage.
Exactly, Battery life will be the hardest part of design for this thing. If you make it rechargeable, the life will be very short. If you use replaceable batteries, you are contributing to landfill overflow. If not for the battery issue, these would have been released a month or so after they were announced.
hmm I wonder if i could fit it into my apple wallet... 3 cards is already really tight.
Why? Just track your phone.
LOL! I'm a key chain minimalist, too. Even the stupid car button fobs are too big. I pick up my wife's chain and it looks like she's a janitor in some mental institution somewhere.
Are you sure your wife is not the janitor of a mental institution? Are you sure that she is actually your wife? The nurse said, it's time for your meds, then you can go to crafts class.

Apple's rumored AirTags item trackers will be slightly larger than a 50 cent coin and around three times the thickness, based on dimensions offered by leaker Max Weinbach (via YouTube channel EverythingApplePro).

airtags-30-dollars-feature-rose.jpg

According to Weinbach, the AirTags will come in one size measuring 32mm x 32mm x 6mm, which would put the circular devices in the same ballpark diameter-wise as a half dollar piece – a bit smaller than Samsung's Galaxy SmartTags (39mm x 39mm x 9mm) and a little larger than a Tile Sticker (27mm x 7.3mm).

A previous rumor from L0vetodream suggested Apple would make AirTags available in two size options, but it's not really clear why two sizes would be required.

Based on images found within an internal build of iOS 13, ‌AirTags‌ are small, circular white tags with an Apple logo on the front. They will likely be attached to items via adhesive or an attachment point like a ring, and there may be multiple ways to use them with different items.

According to his retail sources, Weinbach says AirTags are estimated to be priced at around $39 each (Samsung's SmartTags are $29.99). When they'll be launched though remains the question.

A new "Items" tab enabled by default in the Find My app in the iOS 14.5 beta has led to some hope that Apple's long-awaited AirTags item trackers will finally be released soon. Apple said iOS 14.5 will be released in "early spring," but a specific release date remains unclear.

Weinbach also believes Apple will announce new products "soon," either via press release or some sort of event, although event rumors remain murky at best. According to a YouTube video by hit-or-miss leaker Jon Prosser, Apple plans to host an April event this year.

Prosser himself acknowledges that it's worth treating this April event rumor with some skepticism since it would be Apple's first April event in 11 years, but he does say the source he got this from has a perfect track record.

Either way, Weinbach's retail source tells him that they are expecting three new products to drop into the tablet, wearable, and accessories categories.

The wearables are "likely" to be new seasonable Apple Watch bands, new colors for the solo loop bands, and possibly a new band style. The rumored new iPad Pro is the new tablet, while AirTags will fall into the accessories category.

Volume shipments of mini-LED display components for a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro will reportedly begin in the second quarter of 2021, which spans April through June. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously claimed that Apple plans to announce new iPads as early as April, including new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models.

Can anyone list uses for these things for me???? I got a really nice 4 pack of Tile devices a couple years ago for a holiday gift and still havent used one. I know some people have uses for them. I can see a womans purse. I can see a backpack. I can see keys if you misplace them sometimes. But I dont carry a purse, dont carry a backpack unless traveling on a airplane which I havent done in a couple years, I like minimalist keys so I only carry a fob by itself. I dont carry a wallet as I carry a lot of cash with a couple cards like credit and id in my front pocket so no wallet to put one in.

I am not bashing anyone for using them. I am legitimately looking for uses for the Tile devices I already have and maybe buy some of the Apple versions when they come out. I invest in Apple and like to support them when I can.

Thanks all.

I want one just to leave in my car. That way, by this summer I will be able to find my car in the parking lot.
Why don't you just use "Mark My Location" on Apple Maps when you get out of your car?

Is there going to be some sort of ‘opt-in’ for Apple users?
There is an opt-in for the Find my network.
What I mean is, it’s pretty presumptive to release a product (airtags) that relies on another product (iPhones etc..) to work properly.
It is just one more thing that can be found using the network. Just like your iPhone, iPad, and Macintosh.
If everyone who didn’t have airtags opted out of allowing their iOS devices to be part of the network, the usability would be drastically reduced.
Yup and then they would never be able to find their iPhones, which I am betting most people will want to do.
On the other hand, do Apple have the right to use your device/data to ensure airtags work appropriately?
You can opt in or out. Purely up to you. Given how the Find my network works, there would be no reason to opt-out and given that people want to be able to find their expensive devices there is lots of reason to opt-in.

Batman used Airtags to discover Superman's secret identity. Obi-wan Kenobi used Airtags to track Jango Fett when he escaped with Slave 1. Now we can use this technology to find our pets, keys, wallet, etc. Not interested in it.

I was hoping it'd be $29 including the Apple premium... but I guess $39 makes sense because I think I'm still willing to fork over $39.
Is this a recognition that your chances of losing things is increasing in the future? If you're losing things now, you could be using many of the existing products?

I can't understand the thought process that means people will buy something to fix a problem that don't have or they buy the fix in the absence of a problem?

Would be mighty useful for pet owners. Or people who let their cats out so they can keep track where their feline masters are up to at night.
Ayup - I've been following the Tile forum discussions about tracking pets, but don't want to invest in *another* app/system on top of what feels like a dozen that are already embedded in our smarthome stack. So, it will be fun to see what these could unlock as held against how folks are using Tile Pro with pets.

Yes. Keep in mind the AirTag will only communicate via Bluetooth and the ultra-wideband chip. Not GPS or cellular. this means it will only update the location when is is near an iPhone with offline finding turned on.
I would think it would update to infrequent for it to be useful for pets.
For tracking anything that moves like car/pet/etc I would use an iPhone with SIM card to enable GPS and cellular.
