Again, the base model of 14" and 16" will start with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD. Why would Apple suddenly change their tactics and offer what consumers want in the base models?

Because they want people to buy the Apple Silicon versions so offering them at the same price as the Intel models with less RAM and storage isn't going to encourage customers to do that.

And again, Apple kept the base RAM and storage capacities consistent when they switched models from Intel to Apple Silicon. The Intel 13.3" 4-port MBP and 16" MBP have 16GB/512GB as their base configuration so the Apple Silicon models will also have 16GB/512GB as their base configuration.

It’s funny how everyone wanted an iPhone mini, exactly like a standard iPhone, just with a smaller display, but then they complained because it wasn’t priced as an iPhone SE.

I’ve been dreaming about a smaller MBP as powerful as the bigger model (the difference has increased over the last few years), and of course I expect it to the be closer in price.

Specially when you won’t be able to buy something like it from the competitors.

The 14 inch MBP will have much, much better graphics than the Intel model it’s replacing, right?

Yes. The 16 core GPU version will destroy the Intel iGP and if they also offer the 32 GPU version (which sounds like they will per this leak) then it's going to be epically better.

The price hike is pretty understandable then

Won't there be a base model of the new 14" and 16"?

Isn't this a thread about "Upcoming MacBook Pro to See Price Hike Over Current Model, Equal Performance Across 14 and 16-Inch Sizes".

Since the introduction of the 2016 MBP, there are two 13” significantly different models:

1. Two ports, 1 fan, formerly no TouchBar.
2. Four ports, 2 fans, TB.

The M1 MBP replaced the first model, while the second one is still on sale. So that base model you mention already exists: the M1 13” MBP. I bet you won’t see a 14” MBP with the low-end configuration.

IMO, yes it is.

The "M1X" should handily outperform the i7-1068NG7 and that is a $200 BTO upgrade right there on the Intel model.

So for the same $1999 as you would pay for an i7 13.3" 4-port MacBook Pro, you get a faster CPU, a larger screen with MiniLED backlighting and a vastly better iGPU.

M2 Air should just replace the M1 MBP. Much neater line-up. M-X reserved for only Pro models only

I really hope the 13.3" 2-port Apple Silicon MacBook Pro disappears when the MacBook Air goes to "M2" and adds MiniLED as the rumors state the 2022 model should have.

However, I expect Tim will keep the model (updated to M2) lurking about as a cheaper option to the (eventual "M2X") 14" MacBook Pro.

The M2 Air might start at $1299/$1399. The M1 Air might just stay or be rebranded for the $999 price point.

Yeah I could totally see the 2022 model get a price increase due to MiniLED to $1199 which would require the M1 model stick around at $999 for another year or two until the "M3" model comes out and the 2022 model drops down to $999.

The M1X chip will be a low volume chip compared to both the A series and the M1, so I can definitely see why it will be more expensive. That’s the power of economies of scale. The development cost of those chips is spread over many more devices.

Disappointed if the price is going to be £2k or more for the 14”. I was hoping, as the m1 was cheaper than the model it replaced, that this might be the case for the m1x MacBook Pro’s. mini led I assume is main cause.

I would say $1299 because it will directly replace the current price point, and also potentially upsell some customers to the 14 inch MBP (assuming $1999). The M2 Air with 16/512 would be $1299+$200+200=$1699.

Sure, saving on CPU and GPU costs leads to higher prices for customers. Who would have thought otherwise?
I hope they stay with the 1799 for the 14" but these will be twice the Mac that even the 16" was.
I have the MacBook Air m1 and its a steal. That said if the upgrades in ram and storage aren't insane I may get the 14".
Come on October!
