So after 6 months of normal usage my Baltic blue case is looking absolutely terrible. This is not patina IMO, this is clearly the colour coming off it. I've never seen a leather product do this before.

I called apple support and sent them this exact image. Their reply is that this is "normal wear and tear" and they will not offer a replacement or refund, and there is no known issue with this case. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was bluntly told the same. Pretty disappointed for such an expensive and premium product.

Thoughts?

Unfortunately mine is exactly the same :(
I saw a YouTube video where someone had said this years apple leather cases are painted leather and all black underneath. He contacted apple and they sent a replacement but I’ve had no such luck :(

They are not painted leather, take a knife to the leather and it’s not black leather underneath, when the protective waxy layer wears off the untreaded leaher will darken from the oils on your hands

I can’t remember who’s picture this is but it was somewhere in this topic and i don’t feel like searching thru 220+ pages looking for it, but it’s a red leather case for the iPhone 12 series and you can see from the knick and exposed leather underneath that it’s not black, and actually red dye all the way thru…

Hi everyone!

Been using Apple Leather Case product Red for almost 4 months. What do you guys think? Is it Patina or Dirt?

I’ve used apple leather case in the past, black leather case for iphone 7, midnight blue for X which I continue using for my XS, turned out full black. Then before 12 comes out, I tried SB for my 11 pro which Patina beautifully.

Taken by iPhone SE2

this is happening to my blue 12 mini case. About 3 months of use, and I switch to a silicon case when exercising/active.

not a patina, obviously the color rubbing off the highest wear points.

is it worth contacting Apple for this? Am I likely to get a replacement? Will it just happen again? Or is it possible I have a lemon?

edit: just saw the pics of the blue case above. This is what’s happening to mine. Albeit less severe.

Funny that we are only seeing this issue with Apple brand cases. No other brand is doing this. It’s proof that apple is doing something different this year and it’s not working. My decoded blue case still looks perfect after 6 weeks.
Exactly, my grams28 of 11 weeks is darkening on the edges and corners but nothing like the BB apple case. Hopefully they change that with the new batch of apple cases

And how so is this for real, after this topic got over ran with all those other leather cases, there were post after post of people showing off their new ***** brand cases or shipping information for ***** brand leather cases, but than months later there have hardly been any other pictures showing how they have been aging.

I wonder if apple will fix this for next gen iPhone cases
Scroll back thru some of the early pages of this really ling topic and you’ll see several other apple leather cases that aged in much the same way as these new square edged cases, with the exception of the saddle brown, which was one of the only colours that aged very well
Here is an example from the very first page/first post…

so in the very first post of this topic, is this patina that she was talking about or just the red colour wearing off?

Here’s another older gen cosmos blue case is this patina or again the blue paint wearing off…

what about taupe, another light colour that didn’t wear that well…

so again what are they to actually fix, it’s just the nature of leather cases, some wear better than others, in the beginning of this topic this used to be called patina, now people are calling it the paint wearing off because the apple leather cases are painted,

The intention was to show off patina... Didn't mean to get all political with the Apple/non-Appleness of it all. Just show how your leather is looking. If you have some great patina, how did you get it? That's all this thread is supposed to be for
I think the only problem was there was page after page after page of nothing but people discussing their ordering and shipping progress of cases, as it was this topic was about the patina process of leather cases (be it Apple or other brand cases) but it went on and on with nothing but discussions of the order process of those other cases, and then like i made the comment a few post up people had been posting pictures of their new ***** brand cases but hardly any post of how they had been aging.

and no i did not complain about this topic being over ran by messages of ***** brand leather cases, because just like the aging process of Apple brand leather, it would be nice to see how some of the other brands are aging…

Haha, i am I’m just getting ready to go out and take some pictures, when I go to work, some places are still a little on the “scary side” and make my blood pressure skyrocket, that’s why i stay away from caffeinated beverages…

Based on my experience with past and present saddle browns, I really don't believe these new-gen leather cases are even leather. I'm sure they meet whatever trading criteria is necessary in order to call them leather, but;

  1. They don't patina.
  2. They don't smell like leather.
  3. They respond strangely to conditioner.
If it don't look like leather and don't smell like leather, it ain't leather. Replacing mine with a Nomad. If I'm going to use an expensive case I want it to look and feel expensive, not like a cheap market knockoff that only lasts six months.

No question Jim. It smells more chemical than anything. And whatever Apple did this year is NOTHING like the old cases.

This is my Forest Green from XS Max, I used this about 95% of the time in 2 years 2 mo. of owning that phone, (other was black Apple silicone)

Both look worn now and appear that it went thought the ringer...and that's fine. But I never had this "blackening" on the edges, The FG here is a deeper color green. Paint coating never chipped away. Just 2 years of hard wear and tear. (I DID have a Midnight Blue leather case that was hit with a few raindrops one day, a brief light shower. But those raindrops bubbled, blistered the Apple case. I realize water & leather don't mix... I had rain exposed to this green one & it never did that. Who knows.)

What I do know are these 12 cases are just poorly made, cheap - yet not cheap in price!

My 12 Baltic Blue is starting to look more black on the edges, worse than last week...like a spreading cancer - not like some photos I've seen here so far...but it's a matter of time before that look happens.

*Edit - For the heck of it, cleaned up after a damp Magic Eraser sponge, light coat of Mink oil.

Has anybody's Bullstrap case had the camera ring shrink? When I first got it a few weeks ago it was just barely above the camera lenses but it did still protect them. Just today I noticed that when I lay the phone down the lenses now contact the surface and are above the rim of the case. I contacted them and I'm waiting to hear back. This is very disappointing.

UPDATE: Well that was impressively fast. Within an hour of contacting them Bullstrap customer service sent me an email and a replacement case is being shipped out. I am very impressed, if nothing else they are on point with the CS!

Hello everyone long time Apple leather case user. Been using the new Baltic blue since launch. Recently switched to the saddle brown and the case feels 100x better than the Baltic blue even smells like it too. But just wondering if anyone has that stickiness on their cases and if you do/did how did you get rid of it cause I would like to switch on and off cases but can’t stand that stickiness. It surprising patinad kind of well considering how these are this year. If anyone can help with this it would be appreciated.

also to keep in mind I have cleaned the case with leather cleaner and conditioner and seemed to not help. My next step was to leave in sun for a while to see if it’ll soften it up.

Yes my saddle brown iPhone 12 case has always felt somewhat sticky, or perhaps rubbery. I figured it would improve in time but it didn't. If anything it got worse. In my opinion these new 'leather' cases are not very nice at all. The old saddle browns aged beautifully but the new ones just don't.

Does someone on here have experience how the Mujjo Leather cases age? Do they develop a nice patina, especially the brown ones? :)
