It's about as black as normal black leather, and you're calling it black too despite admitting it technically might not ring as true black in bright lightning either - that is the official "black" people are used to from Apple. Literally called "Black" on the store page.

If people are gonna call the "Black" case black even though you could pick at it being charcoal in bright images, then they certainly should know that Midnight is similarly in the black zone, not navy or some other color under any of the same conditions they accepted the previous "Black" as being a black color. If you want the black case this year, Midnight is absolutely sufficient if you were fine with black before.

WTF? It looks black unless you see it next to black? Then it isn't black. Apple is falsely showing it as black on their website, too. Click on the picture there to make it larger...it is black. Pictures of it next to last years black case show that it is NOT black.

This is not an overblown observation, it is a fact.

I mean... the person who literally posted the picture you are referencing as "black" also then admits in his next post that last year's black is really more charcoal. If you're accepting Apple's license with Black from last year when people can admit it isn't a pitch black inky leather and leans more charcoal if in bright light, you can certainly grasp that Midnight is similarly just about as close to black, but instead of the hint of greyness it hints at cool tone.

Both look black unless next to true black samples if you want to start going outside of Apple's leathers. Midnight looks black to most people because it's close to black intentionally without being black. But they didn't call it black so let's not with the "false advertising." If anything, get upset that black last year was more charcoal like the person who shared the picture you are alarmed by is now saying.

If you can't see the cooler tone on the website, I don't know what else to tell you. It looks like black in most lighting in real life and I own it, just like that charcoal color last year looks black. The web images are accurate. It is not surprising people assume it is black, like you do, because it basically looks like black and if you want black its a good case. If you want navy, skip it - it won't show navy.

Apologist for? Apple didn't say this case is black... it's literally got a new name for a new color. Nobody is saying it is meant to be identical to last year's "Black" so nobody should apologize accept people who didn't read the names and people who are acting shocked by photos.

Read again. The post you quoted is discussing how last year's Black case looks charcoal in the picture people are freaking out about, only for the person who took the picture to come say that last year's black case is charcoal. I'm saying last year's case known as "Black" is a typical black, and I am not referring specifically to Midnight there.

They’re 100% not accurate. The 12 model “Black” cases from Apple’s stock images are lighter in color than the stock images Apple shares of the “Midnight” case, and it’s literally the opposite in real life lol. It’s literally right there in the picture I shared.

And a few more things:
- you keep saying it’s black with a “cool tone”, meaning it’s literally got more blue, regardless of if it still falls in a “black zone”
- I called last year’s case black because … that’s the name Apple gave it, regardless of what I think it actually looks like and would call it
- I don’t want it to be missed that I absolutely love this Midnight color

Anyone thinking or hoping that this year’s “Midnight” leather case would be darker than last year’s black is going to be disappointed. Here is my Midnight case (with last year’s back MagSafe wallet on it) and the Sequoia Green leather case. Indirect indoor lighting. It’s a very subtle dark blue, and it’s undeniable. I’m honestly quite obsessed with the color of it, in a good way. I think Midnight is about as fitting as a name has ever been.

I don’t want to be overly hopeful either, but I’m seeing wear/marks on both of these cases from only a bit of fooling around with the MagSafe charger and wallet. That makes me hopeful that the leather will wear a bit different this year. I never saw marks on the Saddle Brown case except for blacking around the edges after a month of use. Any wear/marks from MagSafe accessories never showed up on that case.

A clear night sky is one of my favourite colours out there, but from my memory of the old Midnight Blue leather case, that one darkened very quickly, so I would imagine the new Midnight case will turn black anyway pretty soon from normal use

That green and cherry are . The bourbon from Bullstrap is more brown than the cherry but it seems it could patina into a close match to bourbon maybe . I’m keeping my 12PM though

I’ve sent Nomad several emails asking if they’ve considered switching back to an entirely leather covered case. I get the usual canned response similar to, we’ll forward this to our developmental department for consideration. Thanks for contacting Nomad goods. While I really like their cases, the tpu sides are a bit to bulky at times.

I have the nomad black MagSafe and the apple black leather for my 12 pro max, now it's warmer the apple case just becomes sticky/clamy around the sides and back, so am back in my nomad which feels much better, the lip on the apple case is a bit higher and I prefer the nomad.
Must be apples leather as the nomad back doesn't feel sticky, but yeah a all nomad leather case would be good I reckon, bring it on.

I'm not so sure...look at pictures of the iPhone 11 and prior saddle brown cases, it looks more similar to this years. I hope they revamped it.

I'm not getting my hopes up though, i ordered one however i don't want to jerryrig it to patina. My 11Pro has aged beautifuly by itself. If this won't patina like the 11's and prior i'm not sure what case i'd get.

Mine still looks new after seven months of use except for the tears on a couple of corners from when I dropped it.

Here’s my horrible looking Apple 12 mini case. I’ve had it since launch day last year and instead of developing a patina the color just seems to be wearing off on high touch areas.

I’ve pictured it next to my red Tochigi leather wallet from Corter Leather. It was once as bright as the case but after 3 years has developed a beautiful deep red hue. This was my expectation with the Apple case…
