I agree, I think it's ugly. It looks ancient, and even though I frequently use WACOM tablets I would never consider this. Most people who work seriously with those tablets want bigger ones. It looks like a weird live-draw gimmick to me.
Don't get me wrong, there are some very good laptops out there I wish Apple would draw some inspiration from, but this ain't one of them.

I don't think this is where Apple will be picking up style tips, but in terms of packing a lot of stuff into a (relatively) small laptop it sure is an interesting attempt.

Tell me it's ugly. I'll agree with you.
Tell me you'd rather buy a Mac than that. I'd agree with you there too.
Tell me it isn't innovative. Not so sure about that. I don't know that it'll be successful, but you can't say Lenovo aren't trying.

- Dual Raid hard drives
- QUAD CPU
- 1GB VIDEO CARD
- 400NIT BRIGHT SCREEN
- Fingerprint reader
- WIMAX
- Wireless USB
- BLU-RAY!!!

When will the Macbook Pro get these features? Cricket cricket cricket...

Blu-ray is optional, not standard, and who gives a damn. 1 GB VRAM is serious overkill, fingerprint readers are dumb, wimax is meh.

Ugly pos.

vista is not as bad as the whole apple world portrays it to be. yes xp is better and yes osx is better but come on...

its ugly by apple standards, but by business machine standards it good.... its quite obviously sacking off style to provide lots of function, something business users will be happy about. it looks purposeful and ready to handle anything you throw at it.

apple's will always look good first, and then function will be brought in around it...you just have to decide which you want. some beautiful looking slab of machined aluminium or a bland, odd looking, but extremely potent and functional machine.

as an engineer...id want the latter for work purposes.

It isn't just the Apple world that's hating on Vista. Quite a few Windows users are doing it too.

But I agree to a point. I mean god knows I hate it myself ;) but some of the hyperbole and "legends of crapness" that surround it are just silly. I say let it speak for itself and it'll be all too clear that it doesn't actually say much worth listening to. Sooner or later, beating something that's already down says far more about the beaters than the beatee.

I've been a "power user" of Windows since it first came out... and DOS before that.... so it's not just the "whole apple world". One of the most significant factors in my switch to Mac was the introduction of Vista.... bloatware, viruses, poor performance, etc. By comparison, Mac OS X is light-years ahead, in terms of user experience. I don't miss spending hours editing the Windows Registry to lock-down security measures or clean up after an app "uninstalled" and left piles of trash behind. That's not to say Macs or Mac OS X are perfect... no hardware or software is.... but it's worlds better than Windows.

As an engineer... the tools that you use will influence your work. This machine is intended for photographers and graphics artists. If I had to hire someone for a job, and two candidates arrived, one carrying a MacBook Pro and one carrying this monster, I know who I would hire.

A great photographer with a pocket camera and a Mac Mini will run circles around a mediocre photographer with the top-of-the-line Nikon/Canon/Hasselblad/etc. and a Lenovo W700... or any other computer. Tools make your work easier, but they're no substitute for knowledge, creativity and experience.

Um, I think I'd be looking at who was more qualified for the position and not of what computer they had. That's just plain silly. And as en engineering student I would highly disagree. That aside, my MBP is a fantastic photo workhorse.

It's not about the tool entirely, it has more to do with WHO uses the tool. You could give a MBP or the Lenovo to any ding dong joe on the street and they would probably surf the web, check their e-mail, etc (the people coming to interview even). But both these (or any machine/tool for that matter) in the right hands could work wonders. Again, basing a judgement like that that on what computer they walk in with is not a good way to hire someone, especially in the engineering field. A bunch of my fellow classmates have MB, MBP, and $3000 gaming laptops, and a lot of them are taking classes over again because most of them (i saw this plenty of times too) were playing games, surfing the web, etc. I thought it was funny when they were bragging about their laptop and then failing the class. That's just me though. And I am moving along fine in the program and I used my clunky Dell laptop for several semesters as a tool to help me.

Not a very valid argument for this bricky lenovo.

Rereading your post I would now assume you meant the one with the MBP? Explain?

I guess the argument goes either way. My argument is entirely for the hiring comment.

Look at this thing:

Just what I always wanted - a 10lb MacBook Pro that also needs six pounds of extra batteries to power it for more then an hour and a power supply the size of an Airport Extreme.

I lived through this about five years ago with an HP Mobile Workstation. I switched to Apple so I could lose carrying weight, not gain it.

I like it. Doesn't look like a silver purse that has to be super light so a 90 pound super model will be able to lift it up. At least with all the other laptop vendors you know what's coming out, unlike behind the iron curtain of super secret Cupertino. Few things are more annoying than Apple treating customers like mushrooms.

People that want Blu-ray ? Even though you don't want them to have it. Once again, 1 GB vram maybe overkill for you, but try to remember, will you, it's not all about you. Fingerprint readers are a great time saver. Wimax might be a great wireless feature. Don't know yet. And neither do you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like the looks of it and the black macbook. But that's just my persoanl taste. I wouldn't think of putting down somebody elses preference.

The MBPs aren't machined and certainly not from a slab of aluminium.
It's stamped out of a sheet of alu and then anodised (poorly, I might add).

The rest of the post I agree with (and I agree with the sentiment in the quoted part as well).

You'd seriously hire someone based on brand of laptop?
Your company would be in serious jeopardy judging MACbooks by their covers.
:p

I love it. They even fixed the bezel so both sides are the same now.

Dual HDD bays means a 32GB SLC SSD for boot and a 500GB HDD for everything else.

I like.

I am no IBM or Apple fanboy but this thing is not only ugly, but the specs are just silly. Sorry, this is not in the same market as the MBP.

How are the specs silly? The thing has over a gig of VRAM and and a tablet built right in! :O 8GB RAM maximum, nVidia quadro, RAID configurations - that's got high-end written all over it.

It may not look sexy or anything, but this notebook seems like it'd be the perfect machine for professional photographers or designers that use Vista.

which pro photographer/designer uses Vista?

Not only 8GB RAM, but DDR3 if I'm not mistaken. Tis a shame to see good hardware wasted on Lenovos. (I have had nothing but trouble with them where I work as their "IT Guy.")

I'm sure that the new MBP when they come out will have some extra goodies, why wouldn't they.

Also consider that Apple is looking in different directions (possibly with new chipsets and the like) and has a tendency to not follow the mainstream to a T. Should be interesting to see what they come out with.

Eh, I'm not sure :p, but if there were then that'd be the system for them I guess.

But my point is that there's a lot of hate going out for this machine based entirely off its looks. I was just saying that compared to the current MBPs that are out it has some pretty awesome specs.

We'll just have to wait and see what Apple has up their sleeves next month.
