Windows shares have to be in the same 'Workgroup' as your Mac to appear in the sidebar.

I have spent hours trying to figure this out, and managed to get it worked out this morning with everything now automatically appearing.

I had 2 'Workgroups' on my LAN for whatever reason (Tiger didn't seem to care, so I never got round to fixing it) and I changed all the Windows boxes to have the same 'Workgroup' and now everything is fine.

guys, not trying to take credit here, but i cant remember where the link is, but ill share what worked for me.

in the network settings. make a copy of automatic and call it something else. then use that

network>>location>>edit location>>make duplicate of automatic.

now i see the computer screens show up on the sidebar...hope it works for ya

Works!

1. Set your windows workgroup name in the WINS network settings tab on every network interface that is connected to the windows network.

2. Make sure that the windows service "computer browser" is running on the windows server

3. Logoff and login again.
post if it worked :)

Yep, worked for me :)

Seems like a bigger pain than Tiger, but at least it's working now :) Thank you!

I have the same problem, but only "half" of it....i have an AppleScript that runs on login, which mounts 2 SMB network shares, one called Movies and one called Music (you take a guess what these shares contain ;)) When i log in, both shares are mounted normally, that is they both appear on my desktop, as well as under /Volumes and under my computer in Finder, but ONLY the Movies share shows in the sidebar. I can't understand it for the life of me. I even switched the order of the mounting inside the script, but exact same result. I dragged the Music share icon from my desktop to my sidebar which puts it where i want it, but upon restarting or logging out and in, Music is once again gone from the Sidebar It's strange and hilarous! But i'd rather figure out how to fix it.

Fix

Go into your network settings. In the WINS setting tab, choose a workgroup. Your computers will show up after you do this.

Sigh, duplicating my location and setting the workgroup name there before switching to that profile worked...for a few minutes. My shares popped up on the sidebar and I was able to connect to them for a bit. Now they've disappeared again.

This is vexing.

I tried this also. i have a MB on the network (same workgroup) that was showing up, but now since I duplicated the location, it's gone too. I changed back to original settings and still nothing shows up...

Thanks for the tip, i really do appreciate it and I'm glad it worked for someone...

I just notice the problem today, it was working fine sharing files with two of my PCs,but today it won't detect any thing on the network

Settings in WINS tab not retained

I'm having a very frustrating problem with the WINS settings tab. Whenever I enter information in this tab, the settings are not retained. If I click OK, then return to the tab, everything is empty again!

edit: Problem fixed! A thread on the Apple Discussion Board helped me figure it out. It involves the duplication of the Location that pitt1717 mentioned. Apparently, the Automatic location doesn't allow settings in the WINS tab. So I duplicated the Automatic location, entered just my workgroup in the WINS tab (left the servers section blank), and now my Windows system shows in Finder! :)

edit 2: This is still working flakey. I can't seem to connect as a user other than just guest.

edit 3: Yeah, now the Windows system disappeared from the sidebar again. I give up. Hopefully they'll fix this in 10.5.1.

Haven't been keeping up here so if it's been discussed I'm sorry.But.

I discovered something just now.

I had incoming IPV6 blocking selected in my AEBS.

I went to system preferences and looked at the network and noticed that the IPV6 address wasn't listed.

So I opened airport utility and unselected the IPV6 blocking and updated.

Right after that POOF! all shares instantly appeared in the sidebar.

[edit] I have since re-enabled IPV6 incoming block on the AEBS and my Mac keeps it's IPV6 address and the shares are still there [/edit]

I have found the fix/workaround

The culprit is the AEBS/Router/Airport card combo not renewing the IPV6 address.

Whatever you have set your router to renew whenever it renews the DHCP license the Airport card will lose it's IPV6 address causing all shares to disappear.

The workaround is restarting the AEBS/Router then renewing the DHCP in the Airport card.Doing this will give you the IPV6 address.Every time. This in turn allows you to see all shares provided the other shares have done the same.

So, what if your Windows network has machines on various Workgroup names? Do I have to change my Mac to reflect the Workgroup I want to work in each time I access a new machine?

Kinda odd.

It was better in Tiger, if this is the case.

After joining a workgroup I see my Vista machine, but I don't see my Tiger machine under Network. I can access them and they can access me just fine though.

Generally yes. I edited all my Windows machines so they are all in the same workgroup.

I don't know if it is being posted elsewhere (haven't read many day's worth of posts) but I see this is still an issue.

I had the same problem and seem to be working now. Try updating the firmware to your router. That seems to have "fixed" the problem for me.

I just created a new network place on my PC and my macbook detect it now.

I'm 99% confident this is a firewall issue.

I'm 99% confident it isn't. At home, it still works. At work, it doesn't. Both use MSHOME - very very frustrating.

Leopard seems unfinished. This is one bug of many bugs and instabilities I've found since upgrading. Not impressed overall.

Add me to the list of those who have stubborn kitties running their Macs. I have a PowerBook running Tiger (10.4.10) and a Mac Pro running Leopard and I've had the same problems others have listed. My Mac Pro cannot 'see' my PowerBook, but my PowerBook can 'see' the Mac Pro with no problem. I have logged into the Pro with the 'Book, sent files over to it, everything -- but the Pro just won't see the 'Book. I have tried everything I have found to no avail. I don't think it's a problem with my AEBS, since the 'Book does just fine. Hopefully 10.5.1 will solve this, but I'll keep an eye out for another solution in the meantime...

I am using the Leopard GM release (Yes I am going to buy it - i know I am naughty - lets not start a moral argument).

Anyway - in the sidebar, there is no mention of Network. And when I mount a network share, it doesn't show up in the devices list.

Is anyone else having this problem? I have to click the Computer icon to take me to where all my drives are, then the Network icon appears there and any network shares that show. I have all the tick boxes ticked in the sidebar preferences.

Any ideas?

all I can tell you is that I had the same issue... with a retail copy! (see above)

just letting you guys know that a week in to the upgrade, i was able to see the shared computers on the sidebar, but now it is completely gone. I haven't changed anything; it just vanished a week later.

to those that suggested to go to the WINS tab settings and set configurations there--how do you do it because i am unable to save the configurations i make. it keeps getting erased. i am getting frustrated.

Not fixed with 10.5.1

Infact, now, my shares tab is there showing my partners little XP laptop shared folder.

One problem - it's 6 miles away and in no way connected to this machine.

Too much to ask?

I am really disappointed with the content of 10.5.1 update.

In my opinion one of the biggest losses with Leopard is the way the Windows shares no longer automatically show up in the finder. I still have to do a "Command K" and enter smb://winsharename (connect) to mount the share.

I don't understand why we have to step backwards...

Enough said.

Neil.
