I thought this Safari tabs tip is nice:

If you have the Tab Bar visible (so that even single-tab windows display the bar) you can drag a tab onto another window's tab bar and they will merge. Very useful when I want to consolidate windows quickly. :)

Drag a tab out of the window to make a new window.

Option-click/drag to do this in Safari 3, even on Tiger.
Shift+Volume key disables the playback sound for volume changes.

And of course, Option+Volume or Option+Brightness opens its respective Preference pane in System Preferences.

These both work in Tiger too (and probably Panther).
WOW!! thats a hard one to find, just found out that if you do CMD, you can drag the icons around, and even remove them from the menu bar.
It's been that way since Panther at least.

Option-click/drag does that in Safari 3, even in Tiger.

Wow, just discovered it while reading another thread!

Try opening a website (this thread should work) and with nothing selected, do Cmd+I It sends the html with Mail.

I know it's not a "hidden" feature, but it can come handy.

Sweet I didn't know that one, not sure if I'd use it much but still..

you can also click on different parts of the attached webpage and remove them if irrelevant. this is very cool.

On Leopard (I don't know about Tiger) you don't need the tab bar visible, when dragging a tab over another window, the tab bar temporarily appears :)

You have to make sure the cursor is ALL the way over to the edge of the screen, for it to switch spaces. See screenshot below:

[snip]

I didn't know this either. I just tried this and it works if you move the window to the top and bottom edge of the screen too!

How you learned about all these tricks?

Where you get them? Just experimenting with the keyboard and clicking everywhere or you use a book or the mac help?

1. Try clicking Shift+minimize button ---> Slow motion minimizing. :) It's soo cool!

2. Select widget in dashboard then click cmd+R ----> Very cool widget refresh!

Not very useful, but I like it!

slow minimising has been in Mac OS X since it first launched and the refresh widget animation was in Tiger. this thread is only for Leopard features.

Not sure if this is specific to Leopard - probably not, but it's still pretty cool, IMO.

In Firefox if you have numerous tabs open (and who doesn't), you can jump to them from the keyboard using Apple Key 1, 2, 3 etc. Try it and see :)

Ups sorry, this one is only Leopard for sure:

Shift+click on the stack---> opens in slow motion.;)

I just discovered this one a few days ago (I even reported it to TUAW and I was "blogged"!). . .

In the spaces preferences pane, you can drag an app from finder to the "diagram" of the space to which you want it to be assigned, and the app will be assigned to that space.

Before, I was just using the "+" below the application list to add an app to assign an app to spaces.

  • You can search in the Help menu and clicking an action performs it.

  • In Terminal, type:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock mouse-over-hilte-stack -boolean YES
Return, then
Code:
killall Dock
Then return, then restart to get this effect when hovering over things in Stacks:

well of course :)

now thats cool! this is even new to me. but i still think Apple should add the application list from keyboard shortcuts to that + button. its hard for users to add the Finder if they dont know where it lives.

This one I recently found out. In Finder, select multiple images and option-click on the QuickLook button. It automatically creates a slideshow of the selected images.

That's cool :p I've turned it off though as it's slightly annoying.

One that's really helped me out: Spring loaded programs.

Drag a file (picture, mp3 etc) to the program icon in the dock that you want to send it to, and press space bar. That program will open up enabling you to paste / insert the file being dragged.

e.g. If you want to insert an mp3 from your desktop into garage band that's behind all your other programs (or in another space) drag the mp3 onto the garageband icon and press space. Boom! as Jobs would say.

Press Command+N to open up a new finder window. Right click in the blank space (I right clicked under my iPod) and select "get info." It shows your computer info.

Or just click on "Tyler's ComputeR" but whatever your name is and select get info.

Command+N opens a new window in any application, I don't think its hidden. But that get info thing is like the "about this mac" in the Apple Menu

So much for good design

As you may have guessed, I don't keep it in the dock.

So did you get it to work?

Wow, just discovered it while reading another thread!

Wow, and it even reads the <div> tags!!! (if you know what that is), so you can select sections of the page.

You can Spotlight it too. Just hit Cmd-Space, the type in "ti" or "tim" and it should be the default result. As long as you're in one of those apps, it'll still do the same thing.

While trying one of these commands, I found another one by accident (hit the wrong key). It's probably been around a while, but Cmd-Shift-Y while on a picture or text file will create a new Sticky in the Stickies program with the contents of that file.

jW

I find things on accident as well:rolleyes:. That one was mentioned, not sure how its useful though:rolleyes:.

Great thread, I've picked up a few handy tips already. :)

cheers.

Wow! This is an incredible thread! Really ought to be stickied to help switchers and long time users alike.

Yeah, I thought it would be a great idea, ive learned A LOT!!!!

Where you get them? Just experimenting with the keyboard and clicking everywhere or you use a book or the mac help?

For me, I found them on accident, or I wish that if i do this keystroke, it does what i want it to do, and incidentally, it works.

1. Try clicking Shift+minimize button ---> Slow motion minimizing. :) It's soo cool!

Same as for everything, Shift minimize puts it in slow motion, just play around, click different things with Shift.

THANK GOD. Those + & - buttons are killing me, i hate them, this ought to be MUCH easier.

I like that one, but reverted it back to the original

Yeah, and you get an index sheet:

Found another one, but I don't think its hidden. while in a text box anywhere, word processor, hold down the Option key and press all the letters on the keyboard, they turn into different symbols, like this:

˙ˆ∫¨©¥†©˙∆¨˙∫¨˙∫¨˙√∫˜˚∆©√†®∂´´å∑´ß≈ƒ©˙∆©˙∆˚¬¨Ô¨Ô¨´Ô´ÎÓÁ´´ˇÓÁÔÔÍÁˇÏÎÔÁˇÓ´ÎÓ„ÁÎÓ

And shift+option gives you even more.

Yeah, that's really useful for typing things like Français etc.

I like that.

I just found another one while at it, Control click the text in the top of the window (eg: Mac Forums - Reply to Topic), and you can see the path of the website, pretty nifty.
Works in Tiger too (at least with the latest Safari).

Keyboard access to tabs in Safari

Not sure if this is specific to Leopard - probably not, but it's still pretty cool, IMO.

This is great - but how can it be accessed in Safari? I keep having to use the mouse to select different tabs :(

Great thread - seriously cool stuff here. Some I knew, others not. The Stickies one is especially nice :)

Command+Shift+Right-Arrow to navigate to the right through the tabs, Command+Shift+Left-Arrow to navigate left through the tabs.

Sorry, but I cannot use Safari, I am waiting for 10.5.2 to fix that issue for me - maybe someone else can help you with that query.

What service, eh?? See above!

This is great - but how can it be accessed in Safari? I keep having to use the mouse to select different tabs :(

I flip through my tabs with cmd+shift+] or cmd+shift+[

Cmd+number loads a bookmark you have in your bookmark bar where the number corresponds to the postion it is from the left. However can only go up to 9

Edit:
Command+Shift+Right-Arrow to navigate to the right through the tabs, Command+Shift+Left-Arrow to navigate left through the tabs.

Also works, didn't know that but I find it uncomfortable in comparison to the one above.
