Voice recognitition is far, far too unreliable to use it.

Myth.

There is an awful lot of data on these things already, but there is absolutely no evidence that Apple is even providing data back to Neuance at all, never mind that any improvement in voice recognition would result.

Siri's voice recognition is basically done. The beta period is about server reliability and some of the messes in it's processing (for example, in the UK Siri quotes share prices back in pounds rather than pence, getting them wrong by two orders of magnitude).

There isn't much evidence of anything with reguards to Nuance and Apple, other than Nuance stating that some of it's technology is used by Apple - we simply don't know anything about their arrangment. I may or may not be correct about more data improving the technology, but to say that Siri's voice recognition will never appreciably improve from where it is today seems especially short-sighted. I'd love to know what your source of information is for stating all this so confidently.

I use it occasionally. I probably use the speech to text the most, usually daily. I also use it for quick web searches while I'm on the go.

Since it snowed here in Michigan the other day, I was dreaming of Hawaii and asked Siri to check the weather in Honolulu. It was 79F and partly cloudy - I wished I was there.

As a fellow Michigander, I know this feeling all too well. Why I still live in this state I really don't know...

I've had it turned off since day 1.

So now you basically have an iphone4, I don't get it, why would you do that?

I have had my 4S for only a week but I use it for texting in the car as others do. Alarms and reminders as well. Sometimes when I feeling bored or "randy" I talk dirty to it.

Except for the A5 chip, 8MP camera, 1080p video recording...

I sold my iPhone 4 on eBay last week for $80 more then I paid originally. Now I have a faster phone with a better camera and it cost me NOTHING.

You have me confused, how did you do, what?
You sold your 4 for $80 more than you paid originally, (so how did you get a 4s for nothing)?
(i'm new, bear with me) :)

I'll honestly admit that I ABSOLUTELY use Siri only for calls, text, reminders, weather, web search etc to name a few.

That's some misinformation and wild speculation!:rolleyes:

When I'm bundled up in jacket and mittens with headphones on I find it easier to activate headphone mic and ask the time than it is to dig phone out of pocket and push the button to get it to show the time.

If I had Siri, I'd use it all the time. When I am out road cycling, I cannot answer texts with my 3GS's voice control. I am able to initiate calls with my 3GS's voice control, which is great, but I'd like to do more. I have a friend who is a programmer (knows HTML, Java, C++, and a helluva lot more) who is working on setting up a SiriProxy server for me and him. I will get the Siri authentication tokens from my brother's iPhone 4S.

It wasn't really NOTHING. I sold my old iPhone 4 for $280. The new 4S cost me $200. So it wasn't free, but since I earned $280 on my iPhone 4 it was a new gain of $80.

Oh, I see. You left out the part about signing a new 2yr contract.
After fees and taxes, you're looking about $100per x 24 that's $2400.00.
You might have momentarily gained $80, but you committed to $2400 ;)

If APPLE would get their finger out and the UK and other countries a lot more functions, maps etc, then I'd use it more - as for now - it's a party piece.

I use Siri a few times a week for:
  1. Setting my alarm
  2. Sending a text message when it's too cold to actually type it out.
  3. Set a reminder when I'm too lazy to type it out.
  4. Show it off to my friends and make sexual jokes.
