Use IMAP

One of the most frustrating things is I'll read an email, then go back to it (even when it's still on my server) and it is no longer readable. This seems ot be because the phone downloads each message each time you try to read it, even if it downladed it before. This wastes time (particularly on Edge), and more important, it means I have to wait to download mail into my computer until I've fully exhausted any views I may want on the phone.

With my Treo, I'd download to the phone, then download to my computer, and the messages could be read in either place. Not so with iPhone.

Apple needs to wake up and realize that most people will not be using WIFI to retrieve emails. With Edge, they need to download it only once.

Try using IMAP email on both your iPhone and mac.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/3B48b Safari/419.3)

MULTIMEDIA MESSAGING!!
Typing in those codes are driving me crazy!!!

8) Vertical scroll using the bezel edge instead of the screen

I would REALLY love to see this as an option.

I would not want this to be the only option, but i would love a similar system to contacts, just not ABC style

Main Reason?

My purchased music folder takes forever to flick through

I noticed something when I was driving in my car the other day. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to skip through the tracks on your iPhone when it's locked? Without having to unlock it every single time?

Example:
I am in my car and I have the stereo output of the iPhone going into my car radio. I have to unlock the screen and click "next" every time I want to skip to the next song (shuffle mode or standard mode).

I think that the home button should act as the clicker when the headphones are not plugged in, and the screen is locked. Click once, it pauses the music. Click twice and it skips to the next track. This would also be useful if you were using headphones other than the white ear buds.

What do you all think?

I think they should make it so you hold volume up or down and it changes the track and do it so you can still control the volume my pressing the volume buttons repeatably.

Im sure everything has been said by now, but i would like to see...

MMS support
I dont care about sending out, i want to be able to see what people send me.

Better Bluetooth Support
I loved being able to share files between my phone and other phones, and other computers using bluetooth, miss that with iPhone

Widescreen
All apps, not just Safari

Copy and Paste
Not a big one, but there are times i do wish i had it.

iChat
The only thing i like better about the sidekick line is there support for AIM, MSN, and yahoo.

Delete All/Delete one
Delete all in mail, and a delete one in SMS. A perfect way is to just slide across the text you wanna get rid of and get that delete button and bam, gone.

Video
I wish the videos went the other way. When i watch, i usually have my headphones in. The headphone fits perfectly and comfortably between my fingers, which is how it is when surfing the web with headphones, but not when its a youtube or iPod video.

More, but all i can really think of right now.

instant calendar display

I use my calendar a lot and would like an option to display "Todays" calendar items on the wallpapered home screen. This way, I would be able to view my appointments quickly and without having to unlock and find my way into the calendar. Simply press the home button and your calendar for the day is displayed.

Macnotes.de posted a comment today that someone discovered fares for "Picture and Video Messages with max. 300kb" on the us iPhone site, which clearly hints at MMS being introduced soon.

Seems a logic step to me, so I guess we can expect MMS and Video functionality very soon (February the latest)

(Video functionality with upload to youtube was mentioned a couple of weeks ago by an apple exec. if I recall it right)

and just for the record, MMS is totally useless, but I would welcome it , just for the sake of not having to deal with those idiots who make fun of my iphone :D

Try using IMAP email on both your iPhone and mac.

Thanks. I've just switched to googlemail because you can only get pop on hotmail.
hard work changing 5 years worth of website account details but worth it. I'm sick of hotmails crappy contact system and more.

I of course think there should be a mms feature but would also luke to see more account and message sync options for mail.app. That and maybe a video recording option.

Text to Speech Synthesis

I do not own an iPhone yet. I have 3 obstacles that prevent me from buying one.

However, if Apple or a third-party would offer a text-to-speech utility it would go a long way toward overcoming those 3 obstacles.

As an individual who suffers a significant speech disability, having a smart phone that could help would help me with communication on the phone. In the office, I use email a lot, and I have a portable computer device based on Windows CE :( which uses DECtalk to speak almost anything I can type. It is a little slow since I am not a speed typer, but it works OK for face to face conversations as long as I can sit down. However, it is tricky to use to make phone calls; I need a speaker phone, and the person on the other end does not always know that a pause may mean that I am busy trying to think and type a response.

It seems to me like an iPhone might be an almost ideal device for this purpose. Since it is based on Mac OS-X, it should be able to use "Alex" and the other Mac OS-X voices easily enough. And it could also display a message that "So and So is typing a message" (visually and/or audibly), sort of like iChat with a voice.

I would love to see such an application made available free or at reasonable cost, and would then be glad to pay the price to buy and activate the iPhone. :)

Priority #1--Make it a better phone!

Apple should place emphasis on getting the iPhone to do the things my old $50 Verizon phone was doing 2 years ago:
1. The option to get notifications when you missed a call, when you have new emails, texts, etc
2. Voice-dialing!
3. More--no make that ANY--options on the camera. Zoom, contrast options, and preferably the ability to take short videos
4. Make "Slide to Open/Answer, etc" an option we can turn off

Once these features are in, I’d like to see:
5. iChat
6. “My Location” functionality on Google maps
7. The ability to change themes, move around icons, etc

iPhone's three missing icons

This is what I think will appear in the space at the bottom of the iPhone's home screen. A "Finder" application combining file browser & application launcher could address a lot of issues raised in this thread.

There are a whole bunch of basic issues I also wish Apple would address - many already mentioned in this thread:

  • Sending an SMS message to more than one recipient at a time
  • MMS messaging
  • Copy and paste
  • Search (contacts, e-mail, notes, etc)
  • To Do lists
  • Speech Recognition and Text to Speech
  • Sending contacts & files via Bluetooth
  • File browser
  • Syncing notes

1. MMS Support (sending and receiving)
2. SMS Forwarding ability
3. Copy & Paste
4. When you click and hold the ".com" key, display ".net" and ".org" options.

Time Stamps for all SMS messages, Native games like the guess the song game, copy and paste, GPS addon. Make the next gen not have a recessed headphone jack, its annoying.

1. MMS messaging
2. Landscape Texting
3. Missed Call and Text Message Reminder Beeps
4. Optional iChat format for texts
