i dont know if anyone has said this yet, but i have a genius idea. i would want the ability to use coverflow in your contacts. that would be great. just have the picture of the person as the cover. same tap to flip over and see info. let me know what you think. i think it would be awesome.

Now THAT is cool!

I wonna do that on my computer, too!

hackers already did the coverflow with contacts. you guys need to jailbreak your phone!

anyway, I am requesting that someone who has knowledge of current hacks go through all of these requests and make one consolodated list.

This is how I would picture it if I did it (and I might in about 2 years when I finally will have free time)

1. Bolded underlined summary of request.: details in request.

More powerful than some laptops!

Holy crap man, just by a laptop.

Really people think of iPhone as nothing more than a cell phone but let me tell you it is more powerful than some laptops I've had. Yes that is back in the dark ages of computing but there is no sense for Apple or anybody else to put artificial limitations on the iPhone. It is a good platform to be leveraged in the future by much higher integration electronics.

Look at it this way the iPhone is very much a generation one product built on early generation SOC components. With modern technology much of Iphone will soon come on one chip, that means more room for storage, ports and the like. While I don't think the 3G version will make that jump this year, but certainly by late 2009 we should be able to put a 1GHz computer into our pocket and think of its cell capability as an after thought.

That is Apple wants to go that way. Personally I don't think they will have much of a choice as the market will force them to. The reality is that in may ways these high performance cell phones beat the common laptop usage by a wide margin.

First off, I really want to love the iPhone, but I can't. I received it on April 5, and today is April 24, and I hate it more than the Treo 650 and 700’s I’ve dealt with over the past three years.

The iPhone is a poorly designed, incredibly buggy device that technologically is a major failure on many fronts. The hardware and software DO NOT LIVE up to the hype. I always wait at least a year or more to purchase new products from Apple, but with the iPhone I should have waited three or more years.

From the lack of tactile keys that is supposed to be the best interface ever designed for a smart phone, yet results in 40% keystroke entry mistakes to the distortion that the iPhone feeds out to every audio and video device on the planet, it’s the worst communications device I have ever experienced.

The iPhone distorts my computer screen, the car audio system to all loudspeakers, either active or passive, including high-end shielded near-field studio monitors, from my Apple iSticks on my computer, high-end surround sound stereo system in my living room to the frigging clock radio.

The static this iPhone kicks out to loudspeakers in my home is HOUSE WIDE, and I am in a 1400 square foot home. If the iPhone is on my kitchen table 15 feet away from my livingroom stereo system, I will still have iPhone distortion come out through the loudspeakers HOUSE WIDE. This is supposed to be an audiophile device and all it does is dump static onto every loudspeaker I stand next to, in every environment.

I have a CRT monitor and I know I am going to get an SMS, email or phone call to the iPhone, because several seconds before the message is received, the entire 17-inch computer screen distorts for as long as 5 seconds, throwing it completely out of focus.

Why the heck does this iPhone not have a pop-up keyboard find function in the database? I have 6300 names in my contact database and it can take 90-seconds or more to find a name through scrolling!

Why doesn’t the iPhone have the same pop-up keyboard feature as in the SMS or Safari function so I can start typing a name and have the contact app bring up the name as I type the letters, as similar to the contact find feature on the Treo? C'mon - how the heck do you not have that common-sense feature? What about a voice find feature OR VOICE ACTIVATED DIALING for the contact database?

Now this really makes me nuts - Safari goes buggy every five days, it crashes more and more frequently and then I need to reset the phone and then I loose all my presets! This is the worst part of the phone. Additionally, regardless web searching is PAINFULLY SLOW! Five minutes to bring up www.huffingtonpost.com or www.rawstory.com, only to have it crash when I try to enlarge an article… argh.

Why on earth does it take SMS up to 10 or more seconds to start and present my message string? Ten seconds for this app to start - gimme a break!

No video function? I can't capture video? Not even a few seconds? Argh.

I can't send a picture through SMS? Good lord.

What the heck is the deal with the recessed headphone plug that makes it impossible to use a standard 3.5mm stereo plug? Now I have to purchase a third-part adapter to use other head phones on a plane or the cassette car adapter? C’mon.

Clearly, the iPhone is the Emperor’s New Clothes. It’s a perfect example if you throw enough advertising, PR and marketing dollars at something, millions of people will eat dirt and call it fillet mignon.

To some degree I agree with you. In my opinion there are widely popular features missing from the iPhone, and I have experienced my fair share of bugs...

That said, the iPhone is still the best phone I've ever used, and possibly the most 'revolutionary' computing device I've ever seen.

The time to really judge is 2.0. I put my faith in Apple to really tighten things up with the next gen OS and 3g device. if they don't deliver this summer, my faith will quickly diminish.

But even so, I think it's an amazing product right now. If anything, the hype engine only serves to drive people to really hate the iPhone for not being 100% perfect.

Sometimes I think Apple's ad agency do them no favours. There is an air of smug around the brand that even as a mac lover I find embarassing when watching TV with friends. When an apple ad comes on, you can hears the sighs!

Anyway, back to the point.... My missing feature is 'UNIFIED MAILBOX'. PLEASE!

Okay, I'm not reading every single one of these posts, so if someone already suggested this, I apologize.

Although Favorites are nice, especially with the Double-Tap Home Button feature, there still not speed dials.

Why not make Speed Dial-like webclips? You can add a specific contact to the home screen, so you can just click that bubble right there and call them. I think that would be nice.

you can do that... theres a web app that automatically does that
visit http://XXXXXXXXXX.TEL.QLNK.NET on your iphone (where xxxxxxxxxxx is the phone number)

Very cool idea!!

Just throwing this out there, fully aware that I'm probably not the first to suggest it in this thread, but: audio notes. Love that functionality in other phones and it is sorely missing.

All Apple had to do was reverse engineer the software features of Palm's Treo. Also, with the iPhone, I am dealing with FOUR DESKTOP applications, instead of one universal application, such as Palm Desktop. As I explained to the Apple 'Genius Bar' nerds at two stores, the iPhone, for a business person like myself that needs to rely on a fast and efficient tool, the iPhone makes 50% more work compared to any other cell phone on the market. I am pleased to report that I returned the iPhone yesterday for a full credit and got myself a Palm Centro. For what I need it to do, the Centro is FAR superior in the most basics of actual functionality compared to the iPhone.

Sorry that it didn't work for you, but I'm curious what your post has to do with this thread. I thought halfway through you were going to state some specific features that you would need added/developed before you could consider getting an iPhone, but instead you just complained that it doesn't work for you. Glad you are happy with your Centro, but try not to derail the thread.

alarm that only vibrates

i request an alarm that only vibrates.

Can someone go through all of these requests and

1. compile them in an organized way (maybe in to categories)
2. say if the hackers have found a solution with native software etc and if they have, what that is, and where to find it.

?

I'd like mail notifications on the standby screen, just like SMS or missed calls. I really don't understand why you can have new mail, yet have nothing to tell you this when you look at the standby screen. The iPhone already has the infrastructure to display them (like SMS), so why not?

A character counter on the SMS application would be a godsend. I hate having to guess how long my messages are, I like to fill them generally but with the iPhone I have no idea. To be honest it's a little ridiculous, it's the only phone I've ever used that never tells you how many characters/messages you're sending.

Also the ability to select custom ringtones for mail and SMS would be nice.

This is a great .Mac sync feature, you should be able to remotley access (from your Mac) a "anti-theft mode" when it is stolen and it backs up all that is not already synced to your iDisk or Mac to your .Mac account then self-distructs :D

Here are the apps I would like to have when 2.0 is out!

1. Text Messaging- I would like there to be more features like forwarding and picture messaging.

2.Wallpaper- I would like the wallpaper to be changed so that it would show on the main screen too. That would be cool.

3. More games!!! Pacman would be cool.

4. More advanced calculators. A graphing calculator would be SOOOO COOL!!

5. iChat- I like it on my MacBook and I bet it would be really cool on an iPhone.

6. Advanced camera with video recording and more features like zooming in and out etc.

7. Easy syncing notes from Notes to TextEdit, Pages, Word, etc.

That's pretty much what would make the iPhone really cool for me. Right now i find it kinda boring.

Three things would make the bugger perfect in my eyes, one of which will be partially addressed in 2.0.

1. A real calculator. I've been using MACalc for months and loving it. Really shows off the lameness of the default calculator, and even puts the 2.0 landscape calculator to shame. I *really* hope this great app shows up in the iTAS.

2. A simple to-do list. Again, I've been using MobileToDoList for ages, and it works fine. Just something that I can jot down little tasks and check them off in. Again, here's hoping for this app to show up in the iTAS.

3. Notes syncage. I mean, seriously, Notes is one of the features Apple taunts us with in Leopard's Mail; why can't Notes on the iPhone sync with that? It would make entering in notes soooooooo much easier, and making backups of them would be a snap too.

With those features, I'd be a happy man.

the most that i miss on iphone is bluetooth file transfers between phones and laptops...

Yes, Bluetooth file transfers! All I need! Its vital I have this on my phone as I send files via Bluetooth a LOT, sharing music, photos and videos with my mate's phones! Not to forget sending stuff from my Mac!

there are only three things i want to see on the iphone that i havent seen addressed...

bluetooth button on homescreen- I don't always have my bluetooth on in order to save battey, but when im in the car, it sure is a pain in the ass to search through 4 menus to turn my bluetooth on.

wifi button on homescreen- again, i usually have my wifi off in order to conserve battery, but when i want to use it i have to search through 3 menus!

i think this HAS been discussed, but it would simply be amazing...

use of iPhone as a multitouch trackpad for macbooks. If a mightymouse can connect to my macbook via bluetooth, why shouldn't the iPhone be able to? This would solve all of the whining that the new macbooks don't have multitouch

this is one amazing idea, but somehow i don't believe it will be revealed, though, we can expect everything from apple

On the "unlock" screen i'd like to see the current weather and upcomming appointments. this way with the tap of only 1 button you'd quickly get all the info you need at 1 glance.

Take a look at this.

Better yet, see this concepts here going on in these forums. Really slick IMO.
