I agree completely. Not having To Do's and Sync Notes in v 2.0 is just so disappointing. Why are these things missing? And no cut and paste. Again why? These are hardly things the SDK crowd will bother with; they are BASIC SMARTPHONE FUNCTIONS. Unless the G3 has demonstrably better phone reception I'll be riding out my 18 month contract and dumping my first generation iPhone at the end of it. Not happy at all.

Also if the SDK crowd adds this stuff, we have to pay extra that is otherwise included with just about every smartphone out there? Now that would be the last straw. Instinct/LG/BB has no worries about losing market. What businessman with their right mind use a SP that can't even copy and paste.

Heres what I want

Essential

Forward SMS
Cut & Paste
All Apps in Widescreen
MMS
Real Button for Camera: It can be a bit fiddly at the moment especially to take a self portrait
Sync Notes
To do List
Full Stop and Comma in Typing Layout

Good to have:

64 gb - I have 50gb of music
Video Camera
Flash
Camera with improved perfromance in dark & zoom
Convert an e-mail to an appointment in Calendar
Hyperlink Appointments to be associated with Contacts
photobooth
Front Facing 2nd Camera
I chat
Louder Speaker
Playlist Alarm
Live Icons to show Weather, Time etc

Electronic Key (car, home and work - I hate carrying keys around
Credit / Debit Card - place near till and iphone controls your purchases - get rid of wallet

Solar Battery Top Up
Personalised & Temporary Voicemail Message to different contacts
Wireless Battery Charge
MobileMe Sync with I Tunes
Play Music over Airtunes

It would be good if all these could be sorted by 11th july

Mr CatMan

YES! Keys, wallet, phone. I'm always checking to see if I have those when I leave the house. I might just duct tape them all together. I got it!

iDuctTape®

1. Interface Compatibility - Landscape Keyboard in Text!
2. Copy and Paste
3. Video Recording Capabilities

Those are my TOP 3 Requests :D

I want to see syncing with iTunes over wifi.

I have a theory about this, perhaps the new iTunes Remote Control app is a test to see if people's networks are configured correctly to allow the iPhone to talk to iTunes over wifi. Once Apple has finished the remote control 'experiment', and everyone has their network set up properly, they will allow us to sync over wifi in a future firmware.

not to mention Bluetooth File Transfers

That has been said a billion times, mostly by me, I hope Apple does this one, is even more basic than MMS!

I hope so, even the ****ing ZUNE has this!

I agree, MMS is really the only thing I sorely miss on the iPhone. I get them quite often and I really HATE that damn viewmymessage.com site, you can't even properly save the photo because it shows up in a tiny flash window. Horrible and annoying.

So, where are we? I might have missed a few, so i'll update come 2.0. But for now, it still looks like a lot is till left wanting.

Good list, although number 7 has already been done. Just turn your phone sideways :)

2. mms
3. landscape texting

8, A .co.uk button in the keyboard

Already there. Make sure the English (UK) keyboard is selected. Press and hold ".com". A pop-up menu should appear with ".edu", ".org". and ".co.uk".

On the U.S. keyboard, that pop-up menu offers ".net", ".edu", and ".org".

Images of the menu are at the bottom of this post.

So, where are we? I might have missed a few, so i'll update come 2.0. But for now, it still looks like a lot is till left wanting.

Might want to update this list. Apple has been busy:

-Advanced calc
-Multiple e-mail deletion
-Sync manually option
-Color coordinated calendar
-SMS to multiple contacts
-Add/edit contacts while on the phone (must go to home screen, then press Contacts)
-Contact search
-Home screen customization
-Microsoft Activesync support
-Double space period then space insertion
-.Mac integration with wireless sync
-Non recessed connector

I may have missed a few too. I imagine that 3.0 and/or the App Store will clean up most of the rest.

I still think Apple will release a corporate version of the iPhone with the "big three" hardware dealbreakers for corporate use:

- Removable battery
- Tactile keyboard
- No camera(s)

I know this is supposed to be about software, but I just want to throw out my list for the Gen3 iPhone (not iPhone 3G).

1) Home Button that changes colors and glows/pulsates as an indicator.
Example: Pulsate Red for Missed Calls, Solid Red for New Voice Mail, Solid Green for Text/IM/E-Mail/Push Notification

2) Front Facing Camera (Of course)

3) High Quality Rear Camera with Zoom + Flash (Of course)

4) Vibrate Patterns

Apple, Hear Our Cry

Oh, wow, this thread exists already! I was going to start a new one. Here's my original post anyway.

Some of these may be geared toward the iPod Touch. I apologize in advance to iPhone users.

I acknowledge that Apple must draw a line between limiting options and complete customization in many parts of its apps and do the best I can to respect what I believe they have made this line to be.

MUSIC/IPOD APPLICATION

PLAYLISTS
Support for Smart Playlists - If I change the rating to four stars on my iPod, I expect it to leave my '5 Stars' playlist.
Support for Folders - Who else got excited when they saw folders in the Remote app? We have them on our computers for a reason... so why not on the iPod, too?
Extended Editing - I want a button at the top-left of the 'Playlists' tab that says "Edit." I want the ability to delete playlists ('On-the-Go' and 'Purchased' for instance), as well as ability to rename AT LEAST the On-The-Go's.

FUNCTIONALITY
Coverflow - On iTunes, if you search for an artist/genre under Coverflow view, your Coverflow is limited to the albums subject to the terms of that search. That is... you're in Coverflow view, you type in 'Green Day,' and you only see 5 albums or whatever. I propose that - when under a certain genre or artist in list view on your iPod - you see only those albums when you turn your iPod horizontally. Doesn't that just make obvious sense? When a song is selected, though, it'd remain the way it is, making it easy to look at other albums from the same artist... that brings me to my next point.
Links - While Apple's tabs at the bottom are great, there's no fluid way of moving between them. Consider a hypothetical: you're listening to your 90's playlist, and "Dreams" by The Cranberries starts playing. You draw up a nostalgia for The Cranberries and want to hear more. How do you get to their other songs? Turning your iPod horizontally and choosing from the adjacent albums is easier than hitting the 'Artists' tab, I think, but there's a better way: making the artist name in the 'Now Playing' screen a link to that artist's menu under the 'Artists' tab. The same could easily go for albums, considering that the song name wedged between them wouldn't be a link (just for consistency, and in case you prefer list view to the flipped album cover). Now, this could go one step further: giving the user the ability to toggle between making those links to the artist/album on their iPod or the iTunes app. But the links on the app... obvious again, no?
Scrolling Text - Alright, so most of us have had other iPods, and so most of you know that even the most primitive of those suckers supports scrolling text for long song names and Podcast names. At the same time, I know that it'd be weird to be scrolling through your songs and see stuff moving so... I propose the following: when you stop scrolling, the text moves. How hard is that?

GENERAL
Alarms in Clocks App (Re-Ordering) - Throughout the interface, it's clear that hitting edit makes possible one of three functions: deleting the item (hit the red circle thing), editing the item (tap its name), or re-ordering the item (drag the little bars on the right). Why no re-ordering for alarms? Why no editing for world clocks (as opposed to delete and add)? Just make all three possible at all times, Apple.
Remote App - Let's say that you have your double-tap of the home screen button set to opening the Music App. Why not have it control the Remote App when you're using it? Maybe it only works when the "Stay Connected" button is set to 'On.'
E-mail notification - I noticed this with the new update, that a sound is made to notify you of new mail. I love it, Apple, but I'd like to be able to customize the sound, however primitive the other choices may be on my iPod Touch. Also, can we get some notification on the standby ('slide to unlock') screen, just in case I'm away from my iPod? I know iPhone users have it.
Videos App - Can we get some tabs for sorting for those of us that have lots of Videos? Every other media app has lists, so... can we get those there, too?
Safari - I'd like to be able to change the orientation of the screen when a keyboard's displayed, since that's when I'd like to make use of the larger keyboard.
Calendar App - One of the intuitive things to do when you have an iPhone is to see what happens in an app when you turn the thing horizontally. I'd like to see this applied to the Calendar app to feature a weeks view or one for multiple months. Makes sense, right?
Photos - Support for folders for albums created in iPhoto, too.

FOR THE FUTURE
PORTING - Can we get some more Apple-made widgets (I'll willingly fork over cash for these) from the Dashboard? Stuff like the Unit Converter, Flight Tracker, Dictionary (!!! The only one on the app store is $30 !!!), Translation, etc. Shouldn't these be obvious additions to the 'stock' apps on your iPhone? It's just so clear.
UI CUSTOMIZATION - Does Apple allow developers to change UI elements like on jailbroken iPhones? Things like the background for the home screen, alternate icons for apps, etc. Somehow, I don't think so, but I'd like to see it happen.
TO THIRD PARTY DEV'S - This should be a separate thread, but I'd pay for a package-tracking widget. That'd be really cool. Maybe the person that made 'Delivery Status' should get on top of this.
SYNCING - I think that it's inevitable that we're going to have to have some sort of syncing capability between our desktop widgets/apps and the ones on our iPhones. For instance, yesterday, I read a thread where this guy asked when we're going to have support for Notes synchronization. That just needs another option in the Applications tab in iTunes. It's already happening with Calendar, OmniFocus, and with Mail... if I'm not mistaken. Obviously, you may want different weather or stocks on your iPhone, but we should have the ability to toggle that on iTunes.

After reading the first few pages I'm worried that I haven't seen this mentioned:

Tethering to other devices. Meaning using your iPhone's cell data connection and sharing that with a laptop. Via BlueTooth or Wi-fi - doesn't matter. I know there are hacks around it when jailbroken phones, but Apple really needs to add this if they want to really get into the work environment. Yes the iPhone is an amazing internet device, but it cannot do everything. Being able to use its connection anywhere with a laptop would be amazing. Especially since so many older, more limited PDAs can do it.

Copy and paste and video recording. But those have been mentioned a hundred times already.

As for 3rd party ideas, my two most wanted are:

Adium port.

GPS logger. Meaning a program to log your GPS location every minute or so into a standard .gbx (I think that's the extension) file so one can use available software to geotag photos taken with other cameras on a trip or make a record of your trip.

This is a great thread - hope someone at Apple is watching.

- Ability to lock individual apps. All of my other phones (at least the Motorola ones) had the ability to lock certain apps like photos, messaging etc. on an individual basis as the user saw fit As I see it now, even if I have a passcode for the general "unlock", once I unlock the phone - say, to let a friend make a call - they now have the ability to see my mail, my photos, my texts, etc.

M

maybe even be able to remove the built in apps, like stocks... i have no need for the stocks app, so, i would love to be able to "hide" it or remove it. from the main screen.

HTML messages from Exchange not rendered correctly

Is this a bug. Email on my iPhone 3G that is synced from my exchange doesn't show html emails correctly. Anyone else notice this?

Full MobileMe on iPhone (aliases...)

My biggest gripe is MobileMe

Let us use our MobileMe aliases when we're mobile!!! duh!

SYNC subscribed calendars to iPhone via MobileMe.
Offer to sync only selected groups of Contacts to iPhone (via MobileMe).
Offer to sync only selected Calendars to iPhone (via MobileMe).

So far, MobileMe reduces functionality more than it adds.

----

FIX the GPS. I'm in the Bay Area, not in the Yellow Sea!
Don't strip out geotags when emailing photos!!! (this is a no-brainer dudes)

YES, give us a horizontal keyboard whenever we want, especially in MAIL!

=E=

I would like to record complete phone calls (the very important ones) or parts of them and to save them. There are some recording softwares out but those apparently only record the sounds coming from microphone and not the dialog partner(s).
