I personally like it, but I can see it being a problem for some. It should be an option to turn it off.

There is an option to turn it off, found it first day i had my iPhone 3G.

General > Passcode Lock > SMS Preview ON or OFF.

Mine is off, so instead of the message it shoes the Contact name and then "Text Message" below the Contact name. :D

Don't you have to turn on passcode lock for that to work?

Hmm let's start with battery life. Ringtunes importing. Allowing movie files to be imported AND NOT crappy quicktime extensions. Passwords for every section within your phone ie Phonebook password, etc. A multimedia phone that u can't use for much more than calls? I haven't even tried using iPod features for fear my phones dead in 2 or 3 hours. I work in the music biz and we love our macs but as for this phone, I'm very disappointed. This was suppose to be "the" phone yet I've got a replacement coming Thursday and if the battery and a few other things arent any different i will be swapping it all together, ive told them, my service provider, im either sending the new 1 back as well or will be cancelling my service with them! They've advise me to try a new iPhone 1st and go from there. We'll see.

I still don't understand why I'm not able to send locational info from maps in an email. Maps could use a few more basic features.
There should be
1) a big button in the Info screen that says "Email Location" that lets me email the address to someone.
2) an option to email directions i've looked up, or at least a link to get the same directions.
3) a Teleport button to you know, get me there instantly.

btw anyone else experiencing random volume glitches? I set my ringer on max volume, but randomly, I miss a call cause I couldn't hear it. Why? I Check settings and my volume is waaaaaaay near the minimum. Wth?

Battery capacity is better than other 3G phones - and they don't have to power all the functions the iPhone does. Once the battery has had stabilised after the first few charges, and you are sensible in switching off 3G/Location services/Push/Wifi when you know you won't need it, AND you have a car cradle/spare USB charge lead - then it doesn't become an issue. I won't ever revert to traditional phones.

A "widescreen" keyboard for SMS and e-mail

The ability to use custom ringtones for sms/email/vm notifications

A configurable screen lock based on if the iPhone is plugged into a power source or not (like the MacBook screen settings on battery vs AC). So if I connect it to car lighter power and have Maps and GPS running, I don't have to go into settings to turn off the auto-lock, then have to remember to turn it back on when I unplug and get out of the car.

Widescreen mode for home screen and maps.

You should check out the app "g-spot." The name is rather kinky but it allows you to e-mail your location via a link to google maps w/ your coordinates. I'm not quite sure how well it works if you open the link on a computer as I have only tried it between iPhones, but I would assume it works the same. There are other interesting features of the program such as altitude etc. The main feature seems to be the compass which doesn't work all that well, however the other features make up for the $1.99 you spend for it- it's pretty neat.

Don't you have to turn on passcode lock for that to work?
Without the passcode lock I guess people could still go in and see your messages. It would require more work, though, and I guess if it's just a friend playing with your phone you don't have to worry about that. Most people who are concerned with people viewing their text messages are also concerned about other types of access.

Ringtone importing will probably never be allowed outside of iTunes. But it's not difficult to create your own and add them to iTunes. And all of the movies I have on my iPhone are .mp4 files. Good luck finding another phone that does everything you want it to and has a good battery life. And more than a tiny display for watching movies... My crew friends seem to like their Blackberry phones. Perhaps you'd enjoy one of those.

1) Custom Ringtones from MP3s (without using 3rd party apps like iToner)

2) Ability to set custom tones (mp3/midi/etc) for all types of events (sms new / sms continued / email exchange / email other / level-1 email [explained later] / sms custom for person / voicemail / calender events )

3) Level-1 email alerts. A level-1 email is an email that is sent to me (as opposed to a mailing list I am on) Non-Level-1 emails should have their own notification and Level-1 should be distinguished. I don't need to be pinged every time an email is sent to the whole company but should be pinged with it comes directly to me.

4) 1-Click WIFI/3G/BT Enable / Disable (these should be shortcuts that can be optionally added to your home screen)

5) Ability to have certain mail entries always use certain network devices. Exchange should Always Use VPN -> 3G -> Edge but never use normal WIFI because the way my company has our exchange setup that just wont work.
Gmail on the other Hand should use WIFI first then 3G/Edge.

6) Contact links for the home page (like website links)

7) Estimated Time Left to Charge Done (like MacBooks)

8) Contacts list is LAGGED very very annoying slow

9) SMS keyboard can be lagged at times and is also annoying.

10) Wallpaper on home screen

11) Daemons for things like Loopt so that it can be updated without the app running, also the ability to silence SMS' from these apps since I don't need to see them I just need them interpreted by the apps.

12) MMS (I use this all the time I am not sure why some people are so against it but it's not a top priority)

13) Ability to arrange icons non-consecutively. That is I want to have an icon on the far left and far right with 2 empty spaces in the middle.

That's what I have come up with so far in about 2 days of use, I am sure I will think of more as times goes on.

GPS is...

useless without a wifi or cell phone connection. granted, coverage in the US is pretty decent, but i took my iphone with me hiking and found the GPS functionality to be useless without the ability to look up google maps. all you get is a dot in the middle of a blank screen. (there may be a way to get coordinates) but it would be nice if i could download regional maps for gps to plot to-

This may have been suggested already but I'd like an easier way to dial contacts. If I bring up the keypad in the phone app, I should be able to start typing a person's name and have any matching contacts pop up. For example, if I start typing 5646 for JOHN, any contacts with JOHN in the first or last name should pop up - there should then be a way for me to scroll to the correct one and dial.

I know you can use Favorites for frequently dialed #'s but you can only add so many Favorites before it loses its effectiveness. And going into the Contacts app and typing the person's name isn't quite as easy either.

Over The Air Sync

Okay, my cherry is broken. This is my first Apple product. Yes it's true. My wife and daughter have iPods and my next computer will probably be a Mac, but I earn my living on PC and Linux platforms. With that said, this iPhone has a lot of upsides over my Motorola Q, but it's not quite ready for business users. For example, not all business users store their calendar & contacts on Microsoft Exchange. To make this phone truly A+, I need to be able to sync my business calendar and contacts. So, I'd love to see Apple:

Open the API allowing 3rd party vendors to develop OTA SyncML apps
*OR*
Change the algorithm to sync calendar entries that extend the IPM.Appointment class

Some of the other desired "features" are nice to have in my book, but I gotta have my calendar and contacts!

Here's my list. Don't know how many of them were mentioned but here goes:

Forwarding text msgs[/U] - If your not going to let me copy and paste at least let me forward SMS. my memory sucks and i cringe when someone asks me for a number . on that note....

Forwarding/Sending someones contact info - for the same reasons as above.

Flagging emails - If your not going to let me send emails with high importance at least let me receive them with high importance

Outlook Notes syncing - to me is as essential as contacts and calender

Mark as read - mass delete was a nice addition to mail, but when i have dozens of emails i dont want to delete but want to read later (daily alerts, etc) i dont want to delete them and dont want to see them as unread. on that note......

Ability to choose bw delete on handheld or cpu - should be a setting.

I now most if not all of these standard features will someday find their way into the iphone mail program, but i hat this incomplete feeling almost as if i went backwards when i made my iphone my main portable email device.

The one feature that has probably been mentioned previously but I'll mention it here just in case it hasn't...

The ability to directly upload a photo to a website. For the life of me I don't understand why Apple does not enable this in their Safari browser. The desktop version of Safari has it as well as every smart cell phone that I have seen (except the iPhone).

Without this feature an iPhone user can only send photos to those sites that have written an app in the app store or have a process that strips the photo off an incoming email.

Possibly Apple is trying to get people to use MobileMe so as to have this.

At any rate it sucks not having it.

is flash too much to ask for? my old nokia from 2004 had it.

i also want wi-fi sync, stability!?, and when i update my apps i don't want them to move....i have pages organized but updating messes that up every time.

Pet Peeves with iPhone

I "upgraded" from a Treo (long standing Palm enthusiast). There were many features on my 680 that are missing from iphone. Credit to Apple though, with with the OS, 3G & GPS, the iphone is nicer. Here's my list:

  • Cut & Paste - must have
  • V-Cards - ability to send contacts
  • Sync Notes - how did you miss that one Apple
  • Disable icon auto arrange - I want to place icons where I want them
  • Re-Order icon pages - its a pain having to move all icons individually if you create a new page
  • Re-Order Favorites, Bookmarks, Stocks etc - its a pain having to create these things in the order you want them to be in
  • Create Mailbox folders - Dont know if I'm dumb here, but I can t seem to create folders to organize mail
  • Document Storage - Fancy being unable to store documents so you can send as attachments .
  • Documents to Go - or equivalent
  • Lite Sync Conduit - iTunes is huge. I only want to use it when I move music, movies etc to the iphone. There should be a lite conduit to sych mail, contacts (& notes)

1. A2DP for Bluetooth Stereo headsets (annoying that it doesn't support this, yet!)
2. Widescreen SMS and E-mail
3. Better battery life
4. Reliable PUSH
5. Ability to save photos taken by the camera in different sizes (make if configurable by General>Camera for example)
6. Ability to take Video using the built in camera

upgrades for iPhone

Having moved from an old Treo 650 I waited for the 2nd coming of the iPhone figuring that they would work out most the bugs. Although not complex issues here's my list:

1) The lack of a good search function for ones contacts is a horrendous ommision. I don't see how Apple plans an entry into the enterprise community without this basic function. I have to carry my old Treo around to look for various contacts. One must be able to search all fields within the individual contact not just the name.

2) being able to type in landscape mode with larger keybord would be huge.

3) Also providing up / down and right / left arrows for scrolling thru your txt/email instead of having to depend on the accuracy of ones "touch" to move the "cursor" would greatly facilitate ones user experience.

Have always been a HUGE Apple fan...VERY surprised at the lack of functionality.

What stops me from buying an iPhone...

I can make my peace with only being able to create groups for my contacts on my computer, even though it seems like they should allow this on the phone.

I can shed a bitter tear but forgive that the search function only looks in a VERY select and unchangeable set of fields...

BUT... until there is a way to transfer a file (pdf) from my MBP to the iPhone... and then email that file as an attachment, they have lost me as a customer.

I really want to give them my money, but that's a non-starter.

How About a Friggin DOCUMENTS VIEWER?

How about a friggin DOCUMENTS VIEWER? One that is NON WEB BASED that will allow the uploading of files via iTunes? Document viewing is ESSENTIAL to STUDENTS as well as BUSINESS professionals, though apparently not as essential as Tip Calculators, Bingo Games, iFlashlights and other Crapp Store fare!

What were they NOT thinking?

No search button in the calendar? This shouldn't even have to be discussed.

No cut, copy and paste? My 5 year old Palm and 4 year old BlackBerrry have it.

Every program should be able to be viewed sideways.

It is an awesome phone but the calendar/sheduler is light years behind my BlackBerry.

I'd like to say first that I still see a lot of potential in iPhone, that is my good comment. However as time goes on and on and the software actually seems to get worst (after the last update) I'm becoming a very UNHAPPY camper. One of the issues leading to that discuss is the calendar app.

To put it as kindly as possible Apple needs to do a lot better here. To put it bluntly a good calendar app is at least half the reason to get a device like iPhone. The fact that it doesn't sync properly with my ICal on my MBP is simply in excusable nor is it acceptable that there is no way that I can see to force cal app to reload from the master calendar I keep on my MBP.

As to all the mentions of people having issues when many apps are installed l, thankfullly that hasn't been a problem for me. I only have three apps installed though. Given that some of the problem descriptions I'm hearing about has me thinking that there are fundamental problems with the OS on iPhone. Let's face installing or running several apps should not make this sort of machine unusable. It is not like this guy is running version 7 of the old Mac OS!!!!

All I got to say is if Apple comes out with the next update and it delivers features but no bug fixes I'm going to be livid!!!

Now guys here is a good question, is there a good discussion forum out there for iPhone that focuses on fixes and work arounds for the damn bugs in the core features?

Dave

This is not a trolling reply...honestly.

But a WM Treo does nearly everything here which ppl are complaining that the iphone can't. ...just some food for thought.
my iPhone has crashed more since launch than my Treo did in two years, so don't start blabbering about stability.
