- You don't wait 16 months for just a speed bump.
- You don't let your iconic ceo step down and have you're replacement, which everyone in the tech industry will be harshly judging, launch your next, and most anticipated product being only a speed bump.

1) Perhaps the Assistant software wasn't ready, or perhaps they didn't want it so close to the Verizon release. Also, LTE isn't ready for prime time yet (5 cities in the US, a handful in Canada, Sweden, and Korea don't justify a global release just yet), so a 4S with a more substantial "iPhone 5" next summer might fit nicely into Apple's plans.

2) It isn't as if we know how Jobs' resignation was timed. It's entirely possible he thought he'd still be CEO and would step down later or even recover and come back full time.

I would like a more substantial iPhone 5 release tomorrow, and up until this weekend's developments thought it was a good possibility. It still might, but it isn't as if the 4S would be a mere speed bump. The software update for the 4S appears to be very substantial.

Random question that is a bit off topic but still fits.

For ATT customers if you bought the last iPhone at the time of announcement will be eligible for an upgrade this go around?

Not if you're on the 2-year commitment plan. You typically are eligible for an upgrade at about 18 months into your contract.

That guy is just trying to get someone at apple fired I would not be spreading that around

yeah that's exactly what it sounds like......

that's probably not his real name, and i don't think apple would fire someone over "you're going to be really surprised"

Are people still confusing 'what they want' with 'what is likely'? Good grief. There's an awful lot of rationalization going on for those people utterly convinced there'll be the 'iPhone 5' they want tomorrow.

Here's my (hopeful) guess, where we get two new models:

iPhone 4S--essentially an iPhone 4 but with non-glass back and a redesigned metal band antenna that is far less susceptible to "grip of death" signal loss. It will be limited to 16 GB of flash memory storage and will cost around US$99 excluding cellphone contract. The device will be GSM or CDMA only.

iPhone 5--looking like a 4G iPod touch but "thicker" to accommodate cellphone electronics, eight megapixel rear image sensor, it now sports a full 4" (diagonal) IPS LCD touchscreen display. It will use A5 CPU/GPU, 1 GB of system RAM, and 32 or 64 GB of flash memory. The device uses a new Broadcom chip that can support either GSM or CDMA "out of the box," with LTE support coming early in 2012 with a firmware upgrade. Also, the iPhone 5 includes NFC support compatible with the Sony FeliCa NFC standard, which means the iPhone 5--running the right software--can now be used for mobile payment systems commonly found in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and parts of Europe. The cost will be US$279 for 32 GB and US$329 for 64 GB excluding cellphone contract.

Have "u" realized that if the Iphone is "in the market", it can't be ahead of "anything in the market"?

You can't be ahead of yourself, except in a number of science fiction novels that usually end horrifically.

Sure you can. It's called "recursive" ... like ...
GNU is defined as "GNU Not Unix".

I know a guy in cupertino, his name is Rick Raname. I can't tell you what and where he works exactly within apple's organization. I tried pushing him in questions and he won't answer to anything for fear of losing his job.

So Apple please give him credit and a raise and a promotion because he is faithful and said nothing TO ME! I am the most obnoxious, pushy person you can ever meet.

The one thing he did say, is Apple will surprise the heck out of us all. They have been trying for so long to keep some things secret and somehow it always leaked. They are really pushing to keep the hush hush on this one.

So i can almost guarantee that it is not only going to be an iPhone 4S. He said that this is the biggest conceal job ever done by Tim Cook and Apple. One of the main reasons he was chosen by Steve to take over was his big belief in company secrets and discreetness. We can only blame Tim Cook for this one.

They have something very very special up there sleeves and have kept it so so quiet. Good job. It is not very easy in such a nosey world where people will pay for info and greedy people all over.

I have known this for the past 3 weeks and did not write anything on it. I see how many people need to know and are dying at not knowing. So since it is tomorrow i thought i would make everyone's life just a bit better for the next few hours.

BTW: The iPod Touch line is also getting a heck of a change.

Let's enjoy the ride!!

KK :D:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

I'm hoping you changed your "friends" name for discretion. If nothing else call him in the morning to make sure he didn't get in a mysterious accident and die, or at least still has a job. I Find this hilarious!

Probably not at the event, a silent update on the website, maybe.

Yes I will. AT&T evaluates (via computer) your value as a customer based on how many lines you have, how much you're spending, and how many phones they wish to sell in a particular time frame. The basic 2yr agreement is just the starting point. Upgrade eligibility is now a dynamic value, not static as in years past.

First, I don't think Assistant is going to be about giving commands so much as an intelligent interface to your phone. The iPhone is primarily designed for touch and voice input (calls, duh). The keyboard sort of works but for anything nuanced it can be a major pain. If you could interact with your phone and it would be able to understand more than "call Bob's mobile" it would be a pretty huge step.

Secondly, if you go back far enough you could say the same thing regarding people talking on their phones in public. Phones calls were much different before mobiles became big (and before that before long distance became cheap and before that...and so on).

It should recognise dialing numbers rather than, or as well as, dialing a recorded designation.

MacBook Pro yes, not the macbook it is dead and RIP.

$999 MBA is the MB replacement unfortunately.

I know there's only 13 hours to wait, but my impatience is making me snappy.:p Tomorrow is going to be a big day.

Will there be an update on the Macbook Pros?. I don't care what they call the iphones 4s or 5 as long, as long it has a bigger screen then i will be selling my beloved 3gs

Hmm.... My last post got removed

So, I'll just revise my tact and line.

Lots of us are currently eligible for an upgrade. I am - have been eligible since about July, and I bought on launch day last year.

Bigger screen I understand, but higher resolution? Are people honestly expecting the iPhone to ever get a higher res than 960-by-640?

That would mean Apple effectively quadrupling the pixel count to a res of 1920-by-1280, to maintain backwards compatibility with the App Store. Which I can pretty safely say will not happen for a screen that'll be 4 inches, 4.5 max.

Why would a higher res be needed, when you can't see the pixels now, I'm perplexed.

My thoughts on the display:

Going larger (say 4") and keeping the same resolution (960x640) means a drop in PPI. It would still be terrific (~288PPI), however, I can't see the highest end model having even _one_ specification that's inferior to the previous generation.

The alternative would be a resolution bump, something like 1080x720 (which is a 1.5:1 ratio and ~325PPI @ 4"). The problem there of course is design and development, plus I would think there would be talk about a major new resolution target, and I would be AMAZED that nobody in any of the development channels, etc., hasn't had any indication of this ... so I think it's unlikely.

FYI, I agree about another doubling, that's seriously diminishing returns (for the power, GPU cycles, etc., that would be needed). 1920x1280 (double the iP4) would be 576PPI!

lol ... I was hoping for a little surprise or something
