This is good point but even with this, at $600 difference for one (so $1200 to do two), you could get a very good TB5 dock for less than that and that dock would likely have additional connectivity that the monitor doesn’t.

I feel confident the panel on the LG will probably be better than the Asus, but whether it is $600 better is the real question.

Based on the European pricing, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was originally going to be priced lower in the US pre-tariffs. $2000 is not a bad price on the surface, but I need more info before making any decisions. At least we finally have choices now!

(The XDR display is lovely and I used to have one at work but to be honest, there is no universe to me where it is worth $6000 unless you’re just so rich that doesn’t phase you or you haven’t found a way to have an employer buy it so you can use up budget before the end of the fiscal year (which is what we did)).

Still holding out hope that if the Acer ever comes to market it will be reasonably priced as it does seem to have a glossy panel.
I've got the Asus right now and have been really happy with it so far! I do think their LuxePixel matte coating is probably not the best, and would have LOVED a glossy monitor, but I wasn't comfortable enough to risk the Kuycon.

I also agree on TB5 support. I don't need my monitor to be a dock... the TB4 on the Asus works great and it not having TB5 was not a concern. I'm sure if we ever get 6k @ 120hz, we'd need TB5, but that's not around yet!

Anyways... I'll vouch for the Asus. I don't know B&H's return policies, but if you're able to order it and return it if it's not to your satisfaction, I'd personally go that route. I use a monitor arm, so don't care about the stand. The monitor's chin is honestly invisible to me once I start using it! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This might be the one for me. I would rather have the XDR but not at $6k (nano), I would definitely pay $3k for it but damn you Apple. I'll wait until get more in depth reviews of the LG and go somewhere where I can find it as a display monitor to check it out.

my 4x 30 ACD’s are still working albeit with a power slab reset on one display as it flickers on and off. But 17 years on they will do me till Apple release a 30-32” that can I justify price wise

My 30” ACD is a good horizontal size for me and has perfect text size for me in macOS. 100 ppi is great for default text sizing, which is why I say I’d love a 200 ppi Retina display (instead of 218 or 224 ppi). However, I retired mine since it has burn in on the side edges and because the pixel density is too low for text. Otherwise still works fine though.

Do you find a brightness imbalance between the left and right sides of your Asus screen? Seeing a lot of reports on this (this video does a good job of talking about it around the 6:33 mark):
)

I guess this means that Intel Macs with Sequoia or Tahoe should work? What about older Intel Macs if you just want 4K support? My last Intel Macs are a 2017 MacBook (Ventura) and a 2017 MacBook Air (Monterey). Both support external 4K .60 Hz monitors.

macOS: Display may not work properly on non-Apple Silicon devices depending on the macOS version.

*Minimum requirements: macOS Sequoia (version 15) or later.

@EugW "I guess this means that Intel Macs with Sequoia or Tahoe should work?"
Because Apple only retrofitted MacOS Sequoia+ to recognise TB4/5 software modes when running on TB3 Macs.

But what software capabilities Apple actually retrofitted remains to be seen in practice.
If you attach a USB4 SSD to an Intel Mac, it appears you can only get a write speed of about half what you would get if you attach it to an M1 (still pseudo-TB3) Mac.
Is this done to give priority to the Alt-mode DP data stream?
Or will Intel Macs not have enough video bandwidth to support a 6K video stream?

If not, then will those Macs that support DSC - 5500XT/5700XT and the final MP 2019 Radeon Pro 6*00X GPU cards - work OK using DSC?

I posted in the LG 6K pre-order thread, but I'll crosspost here:

LG Canada has various discounts on the LG 32U990A-S.AUS 6K.

- $50 coupon if you sign up to their website, for purchases over $500
- 10% off for some occupations
- $300 Visa pre-paid credit card for LG 6K pre-orders from October 10 to 30 with card to arrive 4-6 weeks later

300 discount 1.png

I've pre-ordered, with the monitor to come in November, for CA$2380 (US$1700), plus $13.90 environmental fee, plus tax. At just CA$480 / US$343 + tax more than the Asus 6K, it was an easy decision. I also hope I'll get the $300 Visa card.

Wow that’s better than LG USA. They’re giving you 5% in their rewards points which is like $1.00.
Are those points really that useless?

I was a little surprised to see such a limited promotion in the US, after seeing the Canadian and some overseas promotions, like €200 off in some countries. Also, BH Photo originally had it listed for pre-order at $1799.99. However, I believe you couldn't actually pre-order it at $1799.99, and then they updated it to $1999.99, which is the LG.com USA price, before pre-orders actually started.

AFAIK, it's not US tariffs, because computer monitors are exempt.

First Impressions:
  1. The power adapter is massive.
  2. There’s zero macOS integration — no brightness or volume control.
  3. The monitor joystick is awkward to reach and not very user-friendly.
  4. Color performance feels worse than my LG 27" 5K, though I might need to calibrate or tweak settings. Color pales than my LG 27" 5K side by side.
  5. Its a matte panel.
  6. Sound quality also worse than LG 27 5K

Surprising. But that will most likely be added in macOS soon.
Why do you think that? If LG hasn’t partnered with Apple for this one, we cannot assume that macOS will incorporate the drivers natively. That was one of my worries with the LG. Asus made a big point to tout their macOS integration using their own software and Mac-specific calibration profile, but LG was silent on that. However, see below.*

I’d be happy to use MonitorControl though, assuming that works. I have to use that even with my 30” Apple Cinema HD Display on Apple Silicon. Apple never bothered to write Apple Silicon drivers for their Cinema Displays. The native drivers are specifically Intel-only.

*I assume LG will update its current Mac software for this monitor, but so far the Dual Controller, LG Calibration Studio, and OnScreen Control software applications are not available for download for the LG 6K. However, even if LG’s Onscreen Control app does eventually support this monitor, I still may use MonitorControl instead since MonitorControl feels like native macOS support.

Instead of Monitor Control, give Better Display a try.
Better Display allows far greater control of the DDC/CI command set that you need to control to give the monitor keyboard functionality.
And a greater range of resolution settings.

Actually I chose MonitorControl on my current monitor specifically because it was so simple. However, I may give Better Display a try too on the new monitor.

I'm OK with that. On my current monitor, it's 0.5 cm on the top and sides, and about 0.9 cm at the bottom. While the 0.5 cm does look nicer than the 0.9 cm, most of the time I just forget about it and don't notice any difference.

Furthermore, the 0.5 cm is actually sometimes a slight annoyance. I use a third party web cam on the top of the monitor, but the bracket covers about 1 cm, meaning that on my monitor it actually covers 0.5 cm of the usable screen. Fortunately, it usually only matters in full screen mode. In most cases with regular desktop usage, there will be the menu bar there, and the screen is big enough that there is nothing of importance in the menu bar in that spot.

P.S. I can't remember if you mentioned it or not, but what country are you in? I can't tell for sure, but your plug looks like it could be North American. By LG.com, did you mean USA?

@oKUtItyp,

What is the minimum distance between the table and the bottom of the screen? They don't list that spec.

However, they do list a height with stand of 582.3 mm (22.9") and 60 mm adjustment range, which suggests to me that the minimum height is 522.3 mm (20.6"). Since the screen without stand is 413.5 mm, that means the bottom of the monitor may be at 522.3 - 413.5 = 108.8 mm / 4.3" above the table.

Since I am short, 4¼ inches above the table with a minimum display height of 20.6" is a little taller than I prefer, but it suits Mac Studio users well because the Mac Studio is 3.7 inches tall. This provides >0.5 inches of clearance above the Mac Studio.

Yes. ordered from LG USA
Nice that you got it so early. I had thought it wasn't supposed to even ship until October 20 or something.

Also, what is your source machine, and how are you connecting it? See the bug below in my next post. With DisplayPort 1.4 / Thunderbolt 4 connections, the Dell won't work with RGB 4:4:4. With this connection, macOS disables DSC and provides 4:2:2 instead, resulting in lousy text. OTOH, DisplayPort 2.1 / Thunderbolt 5 and HDMI 2.1 should work fine.

M4 Mac mini - TB4 / DP1.4 and HDMI 2.1
M4 Pro Mac mini - TB5 / DP2.1 and HDMI 2.1
M4 Max Mac Studio - TB5 / DP2.1 and HDMI 2.1
M3 Ultra Mac Studio - TB5 / DP2.1 and HDMI 2.1

However, there is no such issue with the Asus using DP1.4. The Asus has the same 6016x3384 resolution as the Apple Pro Display XDR, but the Dell and LG both have a slightly higher resolution at 6144x3456.
