Yeah, but the guy has the goods. If you bring out a bootrom exploit that will work on all devices then you deserve kudos.
No you don't. Geohot can't keep his mouth shut anyway so he'd eventually tell them or at least hint at what the exploit is. The guy is a complete jerk and deserves nothing from them or us.

There's no reason for Geohot to release this one day after greenpois0n other than the feed his massive ego. It sucks that 3GS owners with the new bootrom would have to wait a little longer for a jailbreak, but to use two bootrom exploits for the same jailbreak is just stupid. Leave it to Hotz to pull a stunt like this.

Maybe geohot has more than one exploit to burn. Remember the dude is a genius.

i love how we all have a negative opinion on someone who helps out the community. people can say what they want.. but george is welcome to do anything he wants. he owes you nothing.. i hate that people think he owes us a 5.0 jb, etc.

He's not helping anyone out but himself. He's just an attention whore. There is no reason to release it this time. None.

Actually there's a whole lot of people
with 3GS's that would disagree with you!

George can do what he wants, he doesn't
owe any of us a thing! Like it or not he's a genius and I'd rather have him on our side than try to alienate him. It was all you ungrateful people who caused him to walk away in the first place!

Unless YOU plan on making the next jailbreak try and have a little gratitude.

True, I forgot about the 3GS owners. However, this guy is still an ass. I'm not ungrateful for what he can do. I just think giving up on a project months ago and then starting to work on it after the CDT announces a release date is an ass move, pure and simple.

Well, remember the exact same scenario played out with purplerain. He burned an exploit there as well, although maybe not as big as this one. That is just what he does. He does not have the best interest of the community at heart. He just has his interest at heart. :p

In that case there were millions of people with 3GS phones who could not jailbreak; in this case the vast majority of the people who will benefit are people either who already can jailbreak their phones using Spirit or Star/JailbreakMe and just are anxious to upgrade to 4.1 or who, against all advice, foolishly upgraded to 4.1 stock. I don't think the two situations are at all comparable.

Purplera1n also didn't prevent him and others from continuing to use the 24kpwn in redsn0w, blackra1n, and PwnageTool through version 3.0.1. He may have speeded up the release of the new bootrom by a bit, and he probably did prevent its being used for 3.1 (it was the Dev Team's plan to wait until October for the 3.1 release), but he didn't really cause any lasting damage.

And admittedly in both cases he was a bit of a jerk in how he went about things.

I reckon he finished developing limera1n ages ago but only announced it as CDT gave a date for greenpois0n. The guys a jerk pure and simple. Comex was going to come out with a 4.2 userland JB for all devices in November anyway.

I see no point in burning this boot rom exploit just so 3gs users can upgrade to 4.1 which isn't even a major update. Egohot causes more trouble than he's worth and I really wouldn't care if he stopped developing altogether.

I've always defended Geohot, but if he's burning a second bootrom exploit that's still unknown to Apple just for attention, then he's crossing a line. Although I'm sorry that new-bootrom 3GS owners may have to wait a while for a 4.1 jailbreak, their inconvenience has to be weighed against the good of the entire community. There is really no way to construe wasting an exploit that could possibly jailbreak the iPhone 5 just to allow 3GS users to do a point upgrade as being in the best interest of the jailbreak community.

I am so with you here, I always defended Geohot before, but this time is just out of line

From what I have gathered, the exploit could be saved for the iPhone 5 just as easily for the hypothetical new bootrom iPhone 4.

Indeed. Unless Apple learns about the weakness, there is no reason to think that it might not be in the next iPhone as well. This SHAtter weakness has been known since before the release of the iPhone 4 and exists in both third and fourth generation hardware. It's only exploitable on A4 devices, but I understand that Chronic-Dev has had it in their back pockets since the iPod touch 2 was released.

Is he really a genius? People throw that word around too much. Sure, he's smart, but he's certainly no genius.

I will admit that he's smart enough to play you all for fools. Everyone here treats him like he's a rock star or something; my advice is to step outside for once in your life and get some perspective.

You are right of course. I did not mean to convey that the jailbreak situation was the same, only that the situation was in how he went about releasing his exploit shortly before DevTeam (at least I think it was before them at that point). Basically I was just trying to point out what you said in your last sentence. ;)

That's just my opinion, remember he hacks other stuff than just iPhones, he's done some great work on the ps3.

Pretty much.
He will be all over the media and giving interviews left and right again:D
Cant stay away from the spotlight for too long, he's like Paris Hilton. He needs it:D

This is incredibly short sited as geohots exploit is in the boot rom. Meaning it could potentially be used in the iPhone 5. i guess geohot doesn't care about this and just wants the attention.

I agree, there will always be more exploits so long as the Dev Team and people like Geo are hard at work. That being said, however, it is an unfortunate waste to use the two exploits right now. Even though I believe there will always be more exploits, why waste time finding more if we already have them and can use them wisely? Essentially what I'm saying is instead of worrying about how many JB's are created, Dev Team and Geo should work together and make the JB's Better (though they have gotten very nice), spend more time making quality instead of quantity. Then JB apps would be updated better and faster for each new JB release and any problems would be corrected faster or possibly even before they became problems.

I hate to say it, but I kind of think all the one upmanship (is that a word?) is sort of a good thing. It has the ability to push all involved to create the newest, latest, hottest, greatest. And in the end, we all benefit. I view it as pride, even though not tactful. I'm not sure that the hippy let's all work together for the greater good vibe, is the way. I'm not saying we should be hateful or angry, but there is nothing wrong with trying to be the best. We may not all agree with the cocky attitude, but it adds some intrigue to the story. It's a free market, & who ever has the best product is entitled to prove it. We will all know soon enough who's jailbreak works bug free, and which one sends you running for a restore. Keep fighting it out guys, I'm truly enjoying watching your strategies unfold!

The problem with this is that Geohot doesn't care about making anything better. He doesn't like making the tools required for end users to benefit from the exploit (which is fine, pod2g doesn't either). He wants to make the exploit, get the credit and media attention. That's it. It may sound harsh, but the community is better off without him.

It's even more obvious with this move. Nobody with the community's interests at heart would have burned this bootrom exploit now. If he actually cared about the 3GS users, he would have shared his exploit with the dev/chronic team when it became known greenpois0n would not work on those devices. Maybe something could have been done to keep the SHAtter details hidden until the next round of hardware and have the teams use his exploit instead. But instead, he announces his tool will be available the day after theirs. In my mind, that's selfish.

Of course, I recall how he kicked off the Sony arms race with the PS3, took credit as the first person to hack the machine, promised further development and then walked away never to be heard from again... so I may be more bitter than most.
