I've always defended Geohot, but if he's burning a second bootrom exploit that's still unknown to Apple just for attention, then he's crossing a line. Although I'm sorry that new-bootrom 3GS owners may have to wait a while for a 4.1 jailbreak, their inconvenience has to be weighed against the good of the entire community. There is really no way to construe wasting an exploit that could possibly jailbreak the iPhone 5 just to allow 3GS users to do a point upgrade as being in the best interest of the jailbreak community.

Welcome to the club. Lots of people thought he was a narcissistic, arrogant attention whore long ago.

And yet the same people keep going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about it ad nauseum. Sort of defeats the purpose to call someone an "attention whore" about a billion times in a million places every time someone mentions the words "jail" and "break" within the same week.

You misunderstand. I've always known he was an arrogant, narcissistic attention whore. But I don't really have a problem with that. The only problem I have is with him acting so contrary to the interests of the community in burning this exploit unnecessarily.

So it seems geohot has quite a good reason to release his exploit now.

If that's the case, then, I think he's tactless but I withdraw any other objections I had. And since Chronic Dev's release will probably ensure an iBoot refresh that will fix Geohot's hole, it makes sense for Geohot to want to release his as soon as possible so as many people as possible can benefit from it before it's closed.

In fact, since there is at least a chance that SHAtter is still unknown to Apple, it makes much more sense to save SHAtter and use Geohot's now. In this situation, it is Chronic Dev who are in the wrong to insist on burning SHAtter just so they can meet an artificial timetable. They should delay their tool, use Geohot's exploit, and save theirs for another day. I know that would be hard to stomach after putting so much time and effort into it...especially with the possibility that Apple would close both holes and their efforts would all go to waste. But it's in the best interest of the community. Looks like Musclenerd agrees with me, too (link | link).

Is he really a genius? People throw that word around too much. Sure, he's smart, but he's certainly no genius.

I will admit that he's smart enough to play you all for fools. Everyone here treats him like he's a rock star or something; my advice is to step outside for once in your life and get some perspective.

He's the first one to make an unlock for the iPhone as well as get into the hypervisor in the PS3. Considering that he's only one person and that many others work in teams, i'd say he's done quite a remarkable job.

I don't worship at the church of Geohot and I think his attitude can be childish, but give credit where it's due.

Your post makes you sound like a jealous schoolboy who couldn't get the girl he wanted for the prom.

You are 100% correct. Cronic Dev are no different than Geohot. They are being just as immature as he is in this case. They should just swallow the bullet and hold release.

Pretty much.
He will be all over the media and giving interviews left and right again:D
Cant stay away from the spotlight for too long, he's like Paris Hilton. He needs it:D

That's how I feel about him too. Geohot announces that he's out of the iPhone scene earlier this year. Just before SHAtter, along with the tool to use it, is to be released he decides to return. Oh look, he's got an exploit too.

He's definitely smart and it's great to have as many people that can figure these things out as possible. At the same time I wish all separate groups involved would collaborate to have a single release with one exploit. There's no need for them to work as one big group but settling on what is to be release and when would be nice. I'd hate to see two different boot rom exploits be revealed at the same time.

Well, we can be grateful about one thing. There are no commando upskirt pics of him all over the internet. :D

Truth be told, I'm a bit embarrassed that I jumped to conclusions in this case without knowing both sides of the story. Now that I know more, I can see that Geohot, despite his narcissism and arrogance, is actually in the right.

This, MikePA, is the difference in our positions that I wished to emphasize: to you, Geohot remains in the wrong because of his arrogance and narcissism; to me, it is his actions and not his motivations that matter.

If I was as smart as geo I'd be an attention whore too. Lot's of jealousy from the google geniuses in this thread.

limera1n has been released...early to get the Chronic Dev Team to do the right thing.

www.limera1n.com

And I hope they do the right thing. It makes me sick to know that these two great, rare bootrom exploits are being wasted at once.

EDIT: geohot has removed the download link "pending discussion".

Update x2: I've uploaded a copy of limera1n.exe

limera1n has been released. With download link for the brave.

Apparently further defying the chronic dev team, geohot has released his limera1n jailbreak for all devices, saying it was released today to get chronic dev to "do the right thing". Looks like windows only program at this time. Chronic dev regards this as an "unstable untether." Having had a bad experience with blackra1n, I won't try this until it's got it's bugs ironed out.

edit: looks like he has already pulled the download link. Tons of drama on twitter right now. This is more compelling than it has any right to be. Looks like the download link was put up as more of a threat than anything.

edit 2: download link for those brave souls willing to test it http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SER9KUGW

Anyone going to try this? And by the way, I'm a lil bit uninformed about the differences between limera1n and greenp0ison. Can someone please explain? Yeah I know lime is from geohot and green is from chronic but what are their differences?

I got it, but no idea what to do with it. I just get a little box that says "make it rain" and then when I click it it says waiting for device.

Geohot is such a $%&*ing butthole.

My phone will never have anything of his installed on it. I'll wait for the Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team thank you very much.

From a users perspective, the difference is going to be which is easier to use and more stable. With neither available right now, it's hard to say, but it looks like greenpoison has been more heavily vetted.

A little more specifically, from what I gather, these use two different bootrom exploits to inject the same jailbreak program.
