Awesome! I purchase it as soon as I get home from work. Just hope their servers can handle the simultaneous downloads of millions of users. :)

So the only way to do a clean install is to first install Snow Leopard and then install Lion.

Just to verify. I have SL on my hd now installed as the only OS. Now if I burnt the DVD would I be able to format the hd and do a fresh reinstall or do I have to have SL installed and NOT format in order to install Lion?

For those of you who plan to do a clean install of Lion: It is correct that you can burn a DVD from the downloaded image of Lion and boot from the DVD. But the installer will not let you install Lion on an empty, reformatted HD. If you try the installer will give the message that it can't find Snow Leopard.

My understanding of it was that doing this would allow you to do a clean install on a new hard disk using the DVD. That is how it is explained here:

Just make a boot disc. You can do it just fine with the GM. Why should the retail version be any different?

You only need SL to get the App Store.

I'm almost absolutely certain your right. Logically it makes most sense.

Great.

More gestures.

Now I have to learn sign language. This is as bad as having to "read" foreign films.

The installer will not install unless it finds SL on the drive.

How is Mac OS on launch day in general? Is it safe to grab it right away? This is the first time I'm going to be experiencing a new OS launch as a Mac user so I really have no idea.. though I am skeptical given the failure that was FCPX.

I'm hearing lots of people with GM saying that it's still fairly buggy and I've got a ton of work to do so I don't want to compromise that.. any suggestions?

There's no harm in waiting a bit. Personally, I've used several 10.x.0 versions (well, 5 and 6 as I "arrived" with the first Intel iMac back in 2006) and didn't have issues. I don't use my personal Macs for work and all my data is Time Capsuled, so I will likely update tomorrow.

My office computer is a brand new iMac and I am doing development on that one and I will be waiting a bit for that one.

No! It's not just a OS update is THE update as every major update is THE update...
The difference between Apple and Microsuffer... I'm wondering if people get excited like this for Windowns updates...

Dude, that was just bad.

It's Microsloth and Winblows.

You can make a boot disc but the installer will not install Lion on a HD if it does not find SL on it. The installer looks for SL. If it does not find it, it will not install.

So to do a fresh install I have to format and reinstall SL, make a boot disc of lion, then install lion over SL?

This is not true. I installed Lion on a blank partition of an external.

The only reason you need SL is for downloading it.

Nah, get out . . .

Really?

But the GM is perfectly fine as a stand-alone once you've made a boot-disc.

Has Apple changed the install behaviour (err . . . parameters)?

I thought all you need SL for is to get the App Store so you can download Lion.

Yes, indeed. If you have the installer and a running system to start it on, it works on any blank drive. I did not put the installer image on a USB stick, so I cannot comment on that, especially since nobody knows what will be there for downloading tomorrow.

(It's 99.9% certain it is the GM)

I think I'll install Lion on the MBP first and play with it for a while before installing it on the iMac. That way if there are any glaring deficiencies I won't be stuck with them until the first updates arrive.

If everything functions the way it did before Lion I'll install on the iMac as well.

I have a feeling Apple is using this as a test for their new cloud facility, I wonder how it will go. It seems like there's probably a lot that's not known about exactly how powerful and capable Apple's new cloud facilities are.

I'm predicting if anything happens and the download doesn't go as planned, it's because of a tree on the power line.
