well just found out i have a project deadline to meet by monday... but alas, i have prior out of town engagements this weekend. if there was ever a time a really NEEDED a laptop, its now. part of me tells me i should go to the apple store and pick up my 17" SR MBP tommorow (you can buy them in the store and take it home immediately right?), while the other says i should wait for an update and just do a poor rush job for my project when i return on monday.

if i knew it was just a penryn update, i wouldn't hesitate on picking up the SR MBP... but i really would wait if they update the keyboard, multi-touch, LED display, and maybe video card and up to 8 gb memory as well. what are your guys thoughts on the likelihood of these non-penryn updates anytime soon? need to make a decision immediately!!!

if only i just bought my MBP in peace a few months back without consulting this damn site :p

*waiting*

AaronRC, hold on in there, I'm desperately looking for a 12" PowerBook to last me until the update; they seem so much more expensive here than in the States :(

Like almost everything else, really.

I've just ordered Office '08 and iWork '08 (need to try 'em both, right :)), so I s'pose I can ... stroke the boxes while I wait for a MacBook on loan (I may well have it tomorrow).

My sentiments exactly!!!
There's always consequences for everything. After my exposure to this site I have become much more neurotic and paranoid about buying. First it went from doing basic research to become more knowledgeable about a major investment, to seeking the advice/opinions of those who know more than me about newly learned info, to becoming greatly concerned about said info/rumors and second-guessing everything. Holy moly Batman! E gads Watson!

Right now, I feel as if I'm in a "damned-if-I-do, damned-if-I-don't" scenario about buying a MBP!

Heeeeeeeelllllllllp!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Updated List

Please post your current MBP status

As of 23:07, it appears that 88% of those in the list are choosing to wait rather than to purchase a SR MBP or MP, based on an even distribution of those who have no details to their name.

Looks like I'm going to need to split any following lists into 2 posts!

Also, bit of a plug: I'm desperately after a 12.1" PowerBook in the UK!

If the work is really important, and having a laptop is truly mission critical, how about going to the Apple store and buying it and then returning/exchanging it? Normally I wouldn't suggest this, but if you really are in a bind and you are going to end up purchasing a (high end, fairly expensive) computer, maybe it's not such a bad option? I don't really know Apple's return/exchange policy, but if it's not BTO you should be OK I would think.

I looked into that as well.. starting with a Whitebook while waiting for an update to *hopefully* happen to the MBP.

Easy answer is "Apple will charge 10% restocking fee for any open box". If you want to take a 10% hit every 14 days then by all means. But again each and every person will be different.

10% isn't worth 20-30mins of battery life and about the same CPU output (Except for anything written for SSE4). Its nice but not $270.00 nice. I'm still hoping they do an update next tuesday!

why? What's next Tuesday?

Why would next Tuesday be "the day"? I wish it would be, but I'm barely over the disappointment of last Tuesday!

They bumped the Mac Pro a week before MacWorld for a little press and to get the item updated. After a week of the "Air Jordan" press has started to die down they get another free bump by announcing the update of the MB and MBP. It also appears that Intel has fallen behind (?) on shipping the new 45nm processors so the announcement would be "available in two weeks".

I know nothing so this is just pure speculation but I'm nice enought o at least post my crazy ideas so people can laught at me next wed :)

You can add me. I begrudgingly changed from an iBook G4 to a 15" MBP after MacWorld a year ago, as I'd sold my G5 tower and needed something with more power than the iBook to replace it. Was hoping for a new MBP at MacWorld 2007, so can't believe we didn't get one this time around.

This is much the same design as Apple had in 2003! Is that some kind of record?

Yes, the MBP is nice (and faster than my dual G5), but it's a fraction too big for me. I can't comfortably open it on a flight or in a train seat (unlike the iBook), it's a bit too big for a lot of coffee-shop tables, and I have to think twice before deciding to take it out of the house. The iBook was just perfect in that respect - not too small to use, but not so big you hated carrying it around.

Ideally - 13" screen with slightly higher resolution than the MacBook, and find a way to eliminate the extra casework around the display and either side of the keyboard, so it comes out a bit smaller than a MacBook.

I don't know who the MacBook Air is meant for, but it's not me. Thin, yes. Light, yes. Small... not really.

Add me to the list. I was going to get the MBA, since all the rumors said it would be around $1500. Now that it's $1800 without the optical drive, I'm just going to go ahead and spend the extra $200 and get the next update of the MBP--so long as it's got MBA's multitouch gestures. --My guess: MBP update in April '08.

In this case, $200 buys me all of the following:
-a bigger, higher resolution screen (and one that's not glossy!)
-an included Front Row remote
-40GB more hard drive space (and faster too: 4200rpm PATA vs. 5400rpm SATA)
-a superdrive
-0.8 GHz faster processor
-expandability & repair/replacement options
-an audio jack that outputs OPTICAL
-better graphics card

If you ask me, all these things outweigh the 'cool' factor. Practicality wins every time.

ive been waiting for a major update so i can feel comfortable with buying one. ill buy one as soon a new one comes out.

One more waiting - but not for long

Add me to the list - I need it soon, just not "Right Now" - 3 weeks from MWSF and still no update, I'll buy the current (and be happy with it!)

All these features make the MacBook Pro LITERALLY outweigh the MacBook Air too ;) it's 80% heavier... 3lb vs 5.4lb. Hoping the MBP loses a little weight in its next form!

I would love for it to lose some weight on the 15.4" end but I want it to gain a pound on the 17" end. I am looking for something to at least have a 512MB GFX card and a second internal HDD and more ports. I really hope some of the ultra slim tech in the MBA goes into the 17" MBP. Like that micro DVI port.

Stop playing Apple and give me a real performance busting MacBook Pro!

You can add me to the list, i've been waiting for a little while now. This will be my first mac, only apple products ive owned have been iPods and my iPhone, which made me want to get a mac in the first place. The first day its available to order ill get it. Hope it comes sooner than later :\

Micro DVI won't drive a 30" ACD!

well, its been a long and enjoyable (in a twisted way) journey waiting it out with you guys... however i am done. will be picking up a 17" hi-res, matte, 2.6, 2gb (upgrade to 4gb from owc), 200 gb @ 7200rpm MBP tommorow in store.

when the penryn MBP is inevitably released, i will show no buyer's remorse - instead i will be happy that all of you troopers will finally get to join me in MBP-glory

This thread is 8 days old, where's your staying power? :p

Really though, all the best to ya. Sounds like you're buying a beast of a machine. (I continue to hold on for the specs to better reflect the price)

actually ive been looking at laptops (some slim vaios at first) for about a year now, and then later committed to make the move to mac a few months ago. stumbled upon this site while doing some research, and been playing the waiting game ever since :p !

i was actually even considering waiting til montevina... but necessity forces me to buy one now. ill probably be back in the waiting game looking for an upgrade when rumors of a 2nd gen montevina macbook start blinking on this site's hyper sensitive radar.

I actually think it will be quite awesome to have a MBP with no internal optical drives.

Like I mean, who uses that thing anyway?

Seemingly a lot of people here use their Mac notebooks as overpowered DVD players, quite oblivious to the fact they could access their movies digitally and thus campaigning for the optical drive to stay, when running the rips off of their HD would save battery and take up less physical space too.

Then I'm not sure, this deep into the product cycle, I'd be getting such a tricked-out monster of a notebook personally. Stuff like the extra for the 2.6 option and HD screen.. these could be introduced as standard in the next revision, which'd be a lot of money "lost".

Instead I'd get something a little less extravagant to tide me over... ymmv!

ahh yea, i considering getting a low-mid range refurbished 15"er for a while to tide me over, but thats still quite a bit of money for a temporary fix. i figured i would just max out since i plan to use my MBP rigorously for at least a year or two. this way i won't feel TOO underpowered in the future. also the current product cycle has proven itself to be stable and has quite the timeless design which i am fond of.

yea when they upgrade in a few weeks, i suppose it will be a perceived loss for me, but the peace of mind + time saved from refreshing this forum every 2 seconds + educational discount, convinced me to just go all out and not look back... unless the MacBook Pro PAPER somehow becomes a reality within the near future
