Best way to convince the wife that you need a new laptop?

Get her in on the action too! ;)

I ordered my first Mac, a Macbook Pro base model with the 7200rpm 200gig drive and 4 gig from Newegg. The wife got the mid level macbook with 4 gig from Newegg. We used the 100 dollar off on a Canon printer which was also having an additional 100 off rebate to get the new Canon Pixma 9000 for 299. She is a big photo nut and scrapbooker so this was a great addition to our order. This is her second macbook, i bought her one for her birthday before we got married. I always watched with envy as she played with hers while i was stuck on this crappy work dell. I have been waiting for one reason or another since right before Leopard came out. I am very excited about this purchase and being a new Mac convertee. Time to begin the learning process........

delivery by march 10th

ordered my 15" midrange model on 26th from germany BTO with iWork - the delivery date is set to march 10th - the last days without a Mac lie ahed of me - I'm waiting for to start my "mac-life" - hope they deliver it faster than announced

So change my status on the list wwwchrisde ordered 15" midrange Macbook Pro

"Wait until the Monteniva update which may or may not include a significant hardware update and new exterior design?" or "Buy now, sell and purchase another when I feel it's time (Nehalem, Sandy Bridge even)?"
I'm only 17, so $4000 NZD is a lot of money for me to blow

You will take too big a hit if you resell in 4-6 months after the new Centrino 2 are out. I would wait, get that car because you live in a gorgeous country! We do know the Monteniva update will bring a faster and cooler machine - that alone is worth waiting for if you don't have to have the computer now.

I am so close...SO close to purchasing the new Penryn Macbook Pro, which will also be my first Apple product ever! I've been giving it a lot of thought over the past few weeks - "Wait until the Monteniva update which may or may not include a significant hardware update and new exterior design?" or "Buy now, sell and purchase another when I feel it's time (Nehalem, Sandy Bridge even)?"
I'm only 17, so $4000 NZD is a lot of money for me to blow considering I'm also currently saving for a car, and have just spent a lot of money on other things. I'm just scared I won't be able to get as much money back from re-selling since I live in New Zealand, and if there is in fact a case redesign no one will be interested in buying.

I'll most likely wait 'til more benchmarks come out, but for now I'll continue to lurk my heart out. (Nice rhyme, huh?)

On a side note: I hope all of you who have ordered thoroughly enjoy your new Macbook Pro, PLEASE be sure to keep all us potential-buyers updated with how it's treating you!

Id actually get it now, enjoy it for a year, year and a half, and then update it with Nehalem or whatever will be on horizon then. It will definitely have already the new design PLUS it will iron out bugs that might come with the redesign if lets say it happens with Montevina (which I still doubt that it will). Also a lot of people are saying that Nehalem will be the update that actually is a reasonable leap forward, the mid-summer montevina setup vs current isnt going to be that much of a difference in performance, so why wait...

Hello! I have a little question conserning the difference betwee 2,4 and 2,5Ghz chipset. One has 3 Mb of cache, the second 6.
How does that affect performances? Is the 2,5 proportionnaly faster than the 2.4 thanx to its bigger cache?

well Id guess 2.5 differs proportionally more from 2.4 than from 2.6, so the best choice out of all those 3 models would be 2.5. As for exact numbers I dont know ...

Of course I was refering to its cache...
In what respect a 6Mb 2,5Ghz would be more efficient compared to the same 2,5hz proc with 3Mb of cache.

Any reason any of you guys chose a BASE MBP over the midrange MB (roughly same specs, minus the slight HDD bump and Graphics)?

I'm having a tough time choosing which computer to go with...

Well, multi touch, 15" higher res LED screen with matte/glossy option, 256MB gpu, fw800 sell it for me. Plus it can run a 30" ACD which will be essential (once I pick one up)

Also there's illuminated keyboard, better speakers, 7200rpm HD option, expresscard slot and it's just 0.4lb heavier than a MacBook... and about the same size, too (MacBooks are pretty chunky for a 13" notebook). MBP easily wins! I'm on a MacBook right now and can't wait to get one, though it will probably be time for another update by the time I'm ready (Fall).

Apple Store was nice enough to exchange my SR MBP 2.2 (bought on Saturday) for a Penryn MBP 2.4. I have to say I am really enjoying multitouch and the extra HDD space. :)

I'm gonna go ahead and say that the bump in the summer to Centrino 2 does not seem as appealing as getting a SR-Penryn MBP now. Apparently all that will really change is WiMax support and a faster FSB, but I cannot justify waiting any longer for such a change. I need the laptop for August, and if I waited and they were delayed till August I would have had to buy a current-model MBP anyways. Too bad there's no magnetic latch, but I guess it's just safer this way anyways.
I'm really glad for the performance boost, battery life boost, cooler chip, and better graphics VRAM. And, also important: multitouch! I don't know if anything else got updated, but I'll be glad to have a very new computer!

BTW: The matte screen is better when you're in the sun, correct? I live in Florida, so the sun is beast and I will need to be able to see the screen and not get blinded by a reflection of the sun :D

YeahI guess all that will change is a faster front-bus speed... oh yeah and DD3 support, its not like that has anything to do with how the entire computer runs... wait and a completely redesigned logic board. Not to mention the Penryn was designed for the Cantiga chipset but is backwards compatible for Santa Rose, but hey who really cares - its capitalism. Have any of you guys bothered looking at the performance tests? They're actually slower:

newmbp-benchmarks.jpg

The penryn was not designed for Santa Rose. I think I'll wait for what it was designed for and has been coined as the most significant update in Intel's history since the Pentium. sillyness...

ps. They will absolutely without a doubt release them before september- that's like their golden quarter. So many schools require macbook pro's, Berklee alone could finance Steve Jobs a new ferrari- Hell, all of you just got him a new private jet. Like I said its merely capitalism.

i got mine the first day it was released (tuesday) i was so so happy because this will be my very first mac...but i asked my friend if i bought the MacBook instead, will i be able to tell the difference between the 2...maybe not...may be i can pretend & think that i'm using a MBP instead of a MB...but i went all the way & hopefully will last for another 5 years until i get spare money to buy a new one...if money is a problem..get the macbook instead- it's pretty decent, i think...;)

Im not sure whether to wait for the montevina update or buy now?

The re-design of appearance doesn't bother me too much, but I will be so annoyed with myself if the monteniva update comes along with a lot better specs for the same money.

When do you think the montevina MBP update will occur? and how confident are you?

Thanks peeps!

Yea, I dont care if they re-design the external look of the mbp, but i REALLY wish they would make the HDD alot more easily replaceable like the MBs. then I would be all over it. I can't decide if i should wait and see if they make this change on the next revision, get the new Penryn MBP, or just get a MB. I really hate having to carry around a external HDD....

yeah AppleInsider and DailyTech says that the Macbooks and Macbook Pros will be refreshed again in June for sure. Intel came out with this Penryn chip to help clear the market of all the old Santa Rose platforms to move to this new technology that mirrors what AMD has been using. Dell and others are already showing new computers with Montevina shipping in June- so just like this past slight modification that actually slowed down the MBP per Intel's order, and the speculation based on other computer retailers- the same will be true for June. Basically Santa Rose and all of its technology will soon become obsolete (even the NVIDIA graphics cards, perhaps putting them out of business) so Apple and other retailers, being prudent of this, are doing all they can to clear this technology; hence the premature macbook update. So like I've been saying this whole time, being one of few that is here for the montevina update, you'd be a sucker not to wait 3 months.

Macworld 09 at the latest? Hopefully around Fall, because that's when I'll want to buy :D

But honestly, the new update does represent better specs for the same money. The Santa Rosa MacBook Pro "high" 15-inch was 2.4GHz with 256MB GPU, now that's what the "low" 15-inch Penryn has.

I think its much better to get the current update, then wait till Nehalem update, by that time if there is a major update including a case redesign this summer, major bugs will be ironed out, you sell your current mbp and get the Nehalem one.
