Yowza... don't know anyone eligible for university discount?

Also, curious - why the high 15" over the base? Surely not for the 100MHz speed bump and 50GB... is it worth the extra £300 for the extra L2 and vram? (I'm a student if you couldn't tell!)

The Grass is Always Greener

Hey guys...you know if you wait for the next big update...you'll be waiting forever. When you seriously think about it 2.5gh and 3.1gh are going to do the same job...unless of course your a hardcore AutoCAD person...or designing games like Halo 9. For the normal gamer the 2.5 will work beautifully. Unless you have a wad of cash that's too big to fit in your pocket and it's all $100 dollar bills...then it's a waste of money to keep upgradeing every year. I bought the mid-line penryn for college and it's going to last me through college. Mabye being an accountant's son has made me extra frugle. Meh, that's just my thoughts, sorry for digressing.

-Cheers Comrades
I got a 15" MBP coming my way next week! Hooah!:apple:

Well so I have a couple questions to ask for everyone's opinion.

background: I'm 17 and will be getting a Macbook Pro as a graduation/birthday/own funds present. I plan on using it for a good 4 years through college. Now to my 2 questions:

1. How big of a step is 256 graphics to 512. If I want to game, is it really worth $500, because that's practically the only difference. I'm not going to be a hardcore gamer, but I'd like to be able to buy a game 3 years down the line and still play it, not necessarily on best graphics, but at least not running slugishly. I'll probably run Halo 2, battlefield 2142, half life 2, maybe crisis (about as high end of a game I'd ever run), etc. Is 512 really worth the extra $500 if I'm not a hardcore gamer?

2. Now or Montevina? Should i get one in a month when I can, or wait for this summer to get the Montevina update. I've heard the speeds not going to be much better and I know the processor will still be penryn, just a platform change. But does anyone see a new graphics card like say the 8800M being in it? or will it probably just be a 8600/8700 again. I thought about waiting too, to see what the probably eminent redesign will be. I LOVE the current design, but what if they make it thinner and add a magnetic latch??? However, the current design has almost all the bugs worked out, whereas a new design will have kinks to work out... So its a hard decision. Any input from you guys would be awesome. thanks. As of now, I'm leaning towards buying one in a month.

I don't think there will be an 8800M in an MBP. The chassis is too small and can't take the heat. But there is no harm dreaming :D

if you want it to last you through college with good graphics, just get it right before school year starts, they will be having a back to school deals and some updated will be done as well. It will be a pain to wait but I think in your particular case its worth it.

Bitting the bullet...

Hi guys,
I've decided to bite the bullet and have just made a purchase:
A Black MacBook instead of the MacBook Pro...

With the narrowing gulf between the specs of the MacBook Pro
and MacBook, I simply couldn't justify the £350 ($700) price
difference in the UK market.

I also prefer the MacBook's form-factor, chic elegance,
magnetic latch and 50Gb larger HD.

It was a no-brainer for me.

I have decided to go backwards and get a 2.33ghz MBP from ebay. The ATI OpenGL performance is better with this model, so the only thing I am losing is a tiny speed bump and the Multi-Touch trackpad.

I'll be saving £500 (US$1000) in the process and will sell it when Apple come out with a new case design.

Cash me out, I'm leaving this casino.

Sounds reasonable if thats for you, best of luck :D

I'm still on track to buy a macbook pro in June.
Still tossing up whether to get the 15" or the 17".
I like the hi res option for the 17", But I don't technically need it. The MBP will be a desktop replacement, replacing a 2.4GHz AMD athlon, 2 gig corsair ram, 2 6600 gt tdh cards running in SLI, 2 WD740 drives running in RAID 0, and one 120gig Maxtor for general storage. It will be a lifestyle decision to change from the Antec p160 aluminium tower (with side window) to using a laptop. My desk will be less cluttered for a start.

Which MBP offers the best value?

Oh yeah I'd like the MBP to really show off Will Wright's SPORE when it comes out in September.

That's probably why I'll get a Dell 1730 with 2 8800M in SLI and two 200GB 7200rpm drives in raid 0. Would have liked a Macbook PRO to go with the new Mac Pro, but I needed PRO features, not just a pro name. :apple:

Sorry to tell you but no matter how much power you put behind it there's nothing pro about a dell. It still can't run OSX and in the end that's what really counts.

I use pro in the sense of the latest, most powerful video cards and two raid 0 hard drives. No, what counts is having the fastest tool to get my work done doing 3D rendering and video editing. Which is why I will have a Mac Pro on the desk and the Dell 1730 for when I'm traveling. If Apple's PRO laptop had that hardware available as a bto option I would have been all over it. They're a big company. They could have offered a real pro laptop chassis. But they decided to develop the Air. I wish them the best of luck with it. Choice is good. :apple:

my new mbp

Was waiting to buy the updated MBP but just got myself a 2.2 SR MBP with 120GB hard drive, matte screen. I don't intend on doing any gaming or intensive graphic work so the speed bump wasn't necessary and I probably wouldn't have noticed the difference. I could have gone for a black mb for my purposes but I like the matte finish and the extra screen space. Most importantly I got it for $1499 brand new using my education discount no tax - no shipping charges:). It will be on my lap tomorrow. Plus I got a free apple remote;) but no multi-touch:( I can live without that for the savings I got. With the money saved I'll get some needed software, a case, and maybe even time capsule.
:apple:

well some members have a very IMMATURE concept of APPLE=GOD and WINDOWS=DEVIL if these people only knew that even if they don't use windows, anymore.. there's a lot of programs running on windows that make our lives EASIER each day.

can't we ALL just get along?:D

My suggestion would be to save that $500 and get a game console with that money. The 256 will be fine for most games, so unless you are looking forward to certain games that are PC specific I wouldn't spend the extra.

Bought Mine

I don't know how relevant this post is since the updates but take me off the list cause I ordered my Macbook Pro.

OSX On Intel Machines

Sorry to tell you but no matter how much power you put behind it there's nothing pro about a dell. It still can't run OSX and in the end that's what really counts.

You can run OSX on any Intel Machine. Google it and you will find out how.
