honestly, i am cool with the santa rosa processor. I have a MB 2.2 SR.

what i am waiting on is a FREAKING GRAPHICS CARD UPDATE!!!!

8600 gt aint gonna cut it for me (i like crysis and such)

what are the odds of a graphics card bump?

crysis runs pretty well on the current macbook pro's.

The res is low and such, and he appears to have shadows off (or on low), which makes this video significantly less impressive. I could be wrong though, the video is hard to analyze considering the crappy YouTube quality. Anyway, I'd like to see something better myself. I'm guessing that the next revision will have a Mobility Radeon HD 3600- It produces probably as much heat and has similar power requirements as the 8600 GT, yet is more powerful, so it seems like a logical step. I'm hoping to see 256MB standard across all models, with an option for 512MB.

*Maybe* in the 17". Don't hold your breath though!

Is the 8600 GT (mobile version obviously) that bad?

Also wouldn't the 8800 be a huge power hog and make the MBP rival a conventional oven?

i ordered Pro yesterday :D

wonder, if its coming a update later this year, isnt it just so that i can send it in and the upgrade it inside if so?

the current one is supergood for my use anyway then ;)

i would take chanse of it coming out with those ugly black keybordd so i just order now.

hey man, that is not my problem. technology and consumers demand that when products are updated, they get improved across the line

I think the 8600 is quite well actually. I'd just wish they'd upgrade the low-end version to 256MB VRAM instead of the 128 it has now.

Anyway, regarding the GPU upgrade - the MBP was designed to be the cutting edge powerhouse laptop, sort of like a mobile and portable workstation. It would make sense to trade in certain mobile features for more power in a way (at least as a BTO option in the high-end 15" and the 17" model).
I don't think MBP laptops were designed to use in a literal sense (i.e. on your lap) anyway ;)

Oh, and I'm waiting for an MBP upgrade as well. This will be my first Mac after a few years of really loathing Mac fans for their "elitist" attitude. However, after having seen them in action at uni, I'm craving for one myself. God, they are simply beautiful! I think the MBP has to be one of the most sexy laptops - if not computers - of all times. Even though the MBA is really appealing, the MBP does have a certain "presence" the MBA lacks.

Now I've been waiting to switch since last August, when everyone was telling me to wait for Leopard before getting a Mac. When Leopard was released, I wanted to wait for the christmas cash. At christmas, people kept telling me to wait for MWSF, since MBPs were likely to receive an upgrade. And here I am now, still waiting. And I'd really hate to buy a computer, only to have them upgrade the model to something more current a couple of weeks later.

But damn, the waiting gets harder and harder every day :(

i'm offically waiting still! i really wanted a macbook pro refresh this week, so i guess i'll wait until feburary. i want a processor bump, penryn will hopefully make 2.4GHz they're baseline model, and i also want a hard drive bump! in otherwords i want to make sure i'm getting bang for buck!

add me to the list!

this will be my first mac :)

1.) This is the MacBook Pro(fessional), if you want a gaming laptop go check out AlienWare or a Dell XPS. If an 8600 GT isn't going to cut it and you still want to buy an Apple Product then go buy a Mac Pro (Non-Laptop) so you can put two 8800 GTX in it and play all you want.

The designers HAVE to live by limitations so its about designing to those and not what gamers wants in a laptop. You have only so much power that each device can draw before you effect another component. If you draw 400Watts of power then your battery life will be 15mins. If you want to game for 15mins then by all means rock on.

You need to understand this is a Professional laptop and if it happens to play games in 1920x1200 in 32bit color mode with shadows and anti-aliasing and every other option listed then great, but don't expect Apple to design a gaming laptop for you.

If you are not willing to understand that you are not the center of the universe then you are not going to be satisified with ANY apple MacBook.

btw.. Dell has a 512MB Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT for gaming purposes. Oh and its only $4999.00 for the base model. I'm sure AlienWare as something along the lines as well. Happy shopping.

hey man, that is not my problem.

Please see above. You can want and hope and dream, but until you show up on 1 Infinite Loop on your flying unicorn or buy 51% of APPL stock, don't expect Apple will design a laptop for a small subset. Live with the hardware or go check out a company that designs gaming laptops.

hey, u can add me too that list waiting for a update. Can't you send this list to stevie and b like please tell us if there is going to be a upgrade in the next 1-2 months u dont even need to tell us what it will be just if there will b one. Because if i wait another 2 months and nothing comes im going too be pissed cos i have already waited about 4 months!! He will prob never write back but still....

i agree... throw us a freakin bone, steve. you don't have to reveal apple's awesome secrets and tell us what you're putting in it, just let people know when you're updating it. a laptop is a major purchase, people should have some idea of whether what they're buying is going to be outdated. car companies give plenty of advance notice when their new models are coming out, right?

hell, i'd even pay to know for sure when the update is coming, so i can judge whether to buy one now or not. you hear that steve, you glorious bastard? you can have even more of my money if you want it!

Apple doesn't pre-announce their products (unless it's a first-of-the-kind product like the iPhone). If they did, nobody would buy the old model after the new model has been announced.

Count me into the waiting list. I've been waiting for a new mbp for some mobile recording in logic. My version of logic on the pc is somewhat dated thanks to apple buying out emagic and i've never quite settled with any of the current pc based recording packages.

The current macbook pro model is looking increasingly like bad value for money as it nears the end of its shelf life. I can put together a dell pc to the same spec as a mid model macbook pro for £895.50 compared to £1599.00 for the mbp. Thats a lot of money for osx and a light up keyboard. I just hope an upgraded model comes out before i decide it's time to pick up a copy of protools for my pc instead.

I'm not going to wait after this week.

The 8600m GT is fine for most games out there, afterall, I don't expect to play Crysis on my laptop. That game has enough trouble running on my 8800GT in my PC. It is certainly playable and looks awesome, but I wouldn't call it great performance.

You got that right! The current MBP line up is a total rip off. Apple should wake up to this fact and release the damn Penryn bump ASAP.

We may be waiting until late Feb for new MBP - Intel are having problems with production :-(

I'm really really hoping that with these new MBPs, Apple will have sorted out their Display quality problems....

Come on guys, this is totally unfair on Apple. The delays are down to Intel having problems with their Penryn CPU's. I'm waiting for a MBP the same as the rest of you, but their isn't anything to upgrade to yet.

mbp update

intel is having problems with the penryn chips, which has caused intel to delay the shipping dates. Yes there are penryn chips available (xeon & a quad core2) but try to find one to buy. Apple can't update the MBP until the new chips are shipping in volume. Don't hold your breath for anything more than new processors, larger harddrive, MT, and maybe a new graphics card. The major update might come when intel releases the montevina chipset, in May. But more likely it will come with the release of nehalem. Nehalem is a new microarchitecture, replacing the core microarchitecture which the penryn chips still use, as well as the code name for the chips that will replace penryn. Nehalem chips will use less power and thus produce less heat, this will allow apple to create a new case design for mb, mbp. why would apple to a major redesign now and then have to do one when nehalem comes out, scheduled for second half 2008.

I'm waiting for the refresh to make a buy. I'm sure I'd be totally happy with the current MBP but I'm not interested in investing in 1yr old tech for the price Apple is asking. In a few weeks I might buy the current revision though and then block access to all the forums and Apple related rumor sites or even the internet for a year or two. (I'm going to build a mobile recording rig with the MBP, so internet is not that interesting for me ;) )

i'm jonzing for one.... i'll only by if there is a redesign, not if there is a processor upgrade. i guess this MBA has got me, thinking of the possibilities.

So heres a question. Lets say they do a small update to penryn, better graphics, more memory, same case design, next month.

Lets say I buy this, then in at WWDC, they release a brand new shiny design that includes everything youd want to give up your first born for.

So what is the feasability of being able to sell the macbook pro I had just bought in order to buy a new macbook pro for a couple hundred bucks.

I know no one can really answer my question, but none of us have much better to do around here except hypothesize, so have at it.
