Guys, I feel your pain. After the news of the MB Air I started to actually want one. But after enough time and PRACTICAL thinking, I've decided to spend the money towards a MBP. Its only logical, and since I have a student discount, its even more so. I am waiting for the next update. I would personally hate buying something to see its been updated two weeks later, or even two months later but props to the guys who buy it now because they need it now, its brave.
Here are my hopes: Obviously Penryn will be the processor. I strongly think that Apple wants the new keyboard across their product line so I am guessing the new model will sport the "new" keyboard. Multi-touch at this point seems to be a given, knowing Apple's history. With the smaller amount of heat coming from the processor, its possible the case could be redesigned to be a little more thin. I am not expecting a complete redesign, but any amount of redesign would be gladly welcome from people, I assume. Now here is where I want some feedback from you guys... We all know how successful Apple's Black colored products have been. And we know that the iPod Classic comes in Anodized Black Aluminum. So am I completely crazy to think that they could make this new MBP with the black aluminum? And how many of you guys would pay a little more for it? I definitely would because we haven't seen a black pro Apple notebook for some serious time now. Is it possible/expected?

(just a little pinch of hope for those of you that're waiting for an update):

I have a friend that works at a Big Blue retailer - according to their inventory system, three new sku/upc's exist for the macbook pro, and will evidently be on planogram (be displayed on the floor) on or before 2/10/2008. And the three skus would logically be the 2 15" stock configurations, and the 17" MBP. Since i'm one of the people waiting for the update to buy a macbook pro, this is good news!

So what prices are attached to those SKU's?

I also got tired of waiting so I purchased one. $2359 for a 15" 2.6 and a 200GB 7200 RPM HDD through ADC is not bad at all. The $200 sales tax is though. I went to OWC for 4GB of RAM that ran for about $100 after shipping charges. I just hate the waiting times to get this laptop. Earliest arrival date is January 25th and the latest is the 31st. Even for 2-3 day shipping it is the 25th to the 30th. It has been 6 hours since I ordered it and I am already going crazy.

That's a great laptop -- I have the 17" high with same specs as yours.

Glad I have it. Fantastic machine past month or so.

If there is an update, have no buyers remorse. Penryn is a meaningless speed bump in terms of performance but will provide another 20 to 30 minutes of battery life. If you needed it, you were smart for getting it, in just my humble opinion.

It's at the manager's discretion I'm told... typically it should only apply to students in universities in the US (I don't think they have the Further/Higher Education distinction in discounts, it's just one Edu rate)

I'm not sure about the student discounts buying from the US but don't forget about shipping costs, VAT and import tax. I think you'll find that'll push the price up to that in the uk store. I think the only way you'll get a bargain is to break the law... which might well cost you a lot of money.

If the item is used you do not have to pay VAT on it. So just remove it from the box and boot it up before bringing it through customs.

Depends on the customs official. I have had to show e-mails from weeks before I left and documents. Just showing that the computer has been used.

I would say bring a couple of files on a flashdisk and mail yourself some e-mail before you leave. Else they can charge you regardless of how innocent you are.

I've been waiting since christmas to get my first mac for college next year. It looks increasingly like it will be a MBP but i reeeeeeeally don't want to buy before an update. I can wait for a while, but i'll probably grow impatient by late February.

It's a great comfort to know there are soo many of you out there in the same situation.

Lets hope we see something tuesday! or next tuesday! or....

Meh...multitouch keypads don't interest me. Better graphics and Nehalem/Montevina is when I'm jumping on board again....thats when there should be significant boost from Penryn. Methinks Q2/Q3 08? Any word on those?

My 17 1.67 PB is still ok, esp since I just got a new screen from APC

I'm leaning more and more towards pulling the trigger on a 15" as soon as its updated. I'm using a 17" 1.5ghz G4 powerbook now. It's fine for most of my uses, but it struggles when streaming HD video. I've also avoided some updates/upgrades since I've planned on replacing it for a while:

New battery
Leopard
New power cord
RAM
etc.

doh...I'm on this list now... I ordered my 15'' MBP Friday (stock 2.2 through ADC), but just now bit the bullet and cancelled the order. I'm going to be on a couple of trips soon, so I'll probably get some cheap refurb MacBook when they're posted Tuesday morning to hold me over.

I really want the case change. I wasn't sold on the MBA's black keyboard at first, but after getting used to it, and knowing how much I've loved using the new keyboard and the MB keyboard, I think I like it now, heh. Whatever the update is, I'll get it as soon as it comes.
