What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

For what Apple is currently charging for Refurbs...I am about to buy one! 2.2GHz is $1700 and 2.16GHz is just $1499. Seems like some good deals. Anybody got any sites that are selling cheaper 2.2GHz or 2.4GHz...I am looking to spend less than $1900. No tax (NJ)?

Apple is NOT going to cannibalize sales of the MacBook Air among current Pro laptop users who would buck up for this.

Someone remind me how these are even aimed at the same users again? MBA has nothing to do with power/professional anything. It's small and kinda useless. 1 USB port? No optical drive? 80 GB HD? Yeah, that sounds like the power of the Gods to me .

Even if they had updated the MBP's along with the MBA it wouldn't have mattered. There wouldn't have been any noticeable "cannibalizing" of MBA sales, as it is a niche market (a very weird one at that).

I can't seem to find the 2.16GHz for $1499. All I see in the refurb store is the 2.2Ghz for $1699.

What I meant was: A certain portion of the PRO market will ALSO buy the MACBOOK AIR -- Just like some of us pro users bought the iPhone.

I use my iPhone to SELL video I produce on an OCTO and a MBP 2.6. I would buy the MacBook Air as a promotional Laptop AND for the Coolness Factor as my clients are impressed by this.

Impressing them makes me money.

Apple has always played this hand out.

They will this time as well.

For sure.

This is just smart and intelligent marketing and business.

All hope be damned.

They did update -- Just two months ago.

I own one: it is a great box. 2.6ghz, high res display, the works.

Rated best power laptop by PCWORD in December.

For someone who sits on these forums with such a creative username and constantly yammering about what "cool stuff" he owns, how about you save a bit on that spending and instead direct some of your limited funds to cosmetic surgery? Like down there? I can imagine that helping you a lot more.

Yeap, I will be very impressed by someone who can barely articulate properly but owns "cool" stuff. Colour me a fool like your clients as well. PCWORD has the authority to rate laptops? Last I heard MICROSOFTWORD said Windows Vista is the best Windows yet!

The MBA and MBP are aimed towards different market segments, nothing more to that really. To suggest any effect on one's from the other's release is kind of like splitting tea leaves...

Thanks for posting anyway :)

IM SICK OF WAITING
i was really hoping for a update to the macbooks
if the white and blackbooks dont get updated buy summer im getting a refurb. MBP

The more I think about it, the more I'm sure: there's just no way that a cheaper laptop than the MBP can have better technology, it must be getting upgraded soon.
Please?
:(

Thanks for such intelligent discourse.

I appreciate your thoughts.

You are the man.

Okay... here's what I want, I hope Apple give it because they really need it.

-- Redesigned MacBook Pro case
-- Micro DVI/HDMI to provide more room for other ports
-- The more ports are: FW400 x2, FW800 x1, USB x2 on both, eSATA on 17"
-- Dual HDDs on 17" BTO option
-- 512 MB GFX card on 17" BTO option
-- 256 MB GFX card standard across the board
-- Multi-Touch trackpad from the Air Book
-- (I don't really care but I am sure they will do it) Backlit keyboard from the Air Book.

-- Built-in 3G/WiMax/Mobile Sprint Broadband card
-- Magnetic latch from MacBook and Air Book
-- LED screens standard, 17" High Res standard
-- NO ethernet port to make room for more ports/features.
-- User replaceable HDD, at least one HDD slot on 17" user replaceable
-- Fully customizable keyboard via Mac OS 10.5.3 or 10.5.4
-- Anything else my heart desires for an awesome Mac Book Pro.

I must say I disagree about ethernet, that needs to stay IMO.
How do you feel about MWSF, Digital Skunk? I was actually wondering about your reaction whilst I was eating dinner, I hoped you'd be as dissappointed as I..

Ditto.

I also disagree about replacing the DVI port with Mini-/Micro-DVI - it's nicer not to have to have an adaptor, and I'm sure there are people out there who want to use their MacBook Pro with a 30" display, which wouldn't be possible (at native resolution, anyway) without dual-link DVI.

I would like to see a better (either faster or with more memory) graphics card though.

-- Redesigned MacBook Pro case - not gonna happen until Montevina it seems
-- Micro DVI/HDMI to provide more room for other ports not gonna happen
-- The more ports are: FW400 x2, FW800 x1, USB x2 on both even the Mac Pro only has two fw 400s!
...

-- 512 MB GFX card on 17" BTO option hoping so
-- 256 MB GFX card standard across the board hoping so
-- Multi-Touch trackpad from the Air Book hmmm...
-- (I don't really care but I am sure they will do it) Backlit keyboard from the Air Book. hoping it's just the regular MBP keyboard... if not I at least hope it's not black

-- Built-in 3G/WiMax/Mobile Sprint Broadband card no wayyy
-- Magnetic latch from MacBook and Air Book hoping so
-- LED screens standard, 17" High Res standard hmmm...
-- NO ethernet port to make room for more ports/features. no wayyy

My thoughts :)

Holding on to hope!

I too hoped for an MBP upgrade, and continue to hope for a 'miracle' like a previous thread stated. It has been awhile since the last real upgrade (June). I sure hope it is coming soon! Trying to patiently wait:(

I intend to get a MBP but whats this talk of a "new" macbook pro? Has it come out yet, any website links to anything on this.....PPPLLLLEAAASSSEEEEE

MacBook Pro has been the same since June 07, apart from a 2.6GHz option introduced in November. It's "due" soon!

New MBP

Ill be getting my first Mac as soon as they release an update to the MBP. I was really hoping for one at MWSF but ill continue to be patient and wait. Maybe they will be out in time for me to purchase it at the new Apple Store due this spring here in Little Rock.

How much do you think the current generation mbp would go down with a new line introduced?

I am very pleased with Time Capsule... very pleased with that indeed. That is a tool that just about every Pro and consumer could use in their life unless you have more that a TB to backup.

I am happy to see the 12" Power Book replacement but very unhappy with the HDD selection that it has. It is very true that competitors have made smaller, lighter notebooks that still carry an optical drive and a conventional 2.5" HDD, but they aren't as thin... so i guess it's a trade off. If I were into ultra portable laptops and a Mac head then I would get one... but I be very sore about two things.... (1) The lack of a replaceable battery... COME ON! that is something that just should have been there. As I said, Apple does this every so often... last time it was with the iPhone, missing features that should have been there, now it's the Air Book (which I will forever call it). The second feature is (2) the poor HDD selection. I would rather have a 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and so forth instead of the slow HDD that is in the iPod. 1.8" drive? COME ON!

The other thing were okay but obviously going to happen. If they didn't do it I wouldn't have been that upset. The Apple TV seems more promising now.

Don't forget that the design hasn't changed much since 2002. It is now the oldest design in the lineup. Even the G4 --> G5 transition warranted a design change in the Power Mac. The G4 to Intel change in the laptop lineup gave us a change in the Macbook/iBook. The G4 to G5 change in the iMac, and the recent change in the iMac.

COME ON APPLE!

True! I hope, but doubt, there will be a huge makeover in the first half of 2008.

I've been waiting for a MBP update for a month now, as soon as they get updated I'm buying one.

What, exactly, do you want?

What technology exists that the MBP does not have?

BluRay? HD DVD?

New Case? Why -- the current one is excellent and is selling like mad.
lol. this is so true man

im so glad that im not on the list of the ones waiting for the MBP updates

i knew it this will happen

How much do you think the current generation mbp would go down with a new line introduced?

MBPs are not shares, it will go down quite a far bit when the new revisions come with... probably 250GB standard hard drive with option to BTO 320GB ones.

The faster processor options at current stock prices just makes it take a bigger pounding...

Still the incorporation of multi touch trackpads on the Macbook Air just makes it all the more worthwhile to see what Apple can do with them if anything.

What is so good about Time Capsule? You still backup all of your data onto a single disk: hardy reassuring to me.

Currently I have a NewerTech Maximum enclosure hooked up to my Airport Extreme, providing for real time RAID-1 mirroring all the time. The only caveat is Time Machine does not work with it, not so much due to hardware limitations, but because of Apple's gay constraints.

Even then with Chronosync I still have the peace of mind knowing that if anything goes in my backup solution my data is still there if I need it.

I have £1800 waiting to buy a new MBP (my PowerBook is on its last legs). But why would I buy one now?? I know the next one will have a multi-touch track pad and Penryn (as well as the usual memory upgrades etc.).

I'm so pissed off that I'm just having to wait... AND FOR HOW LONG?

I love Apple. But I also hate them. I hate them all.

That's probably the only issue I have with TC. You can connect an external drive to it but I don't know if you can back up your TC with an external drive. Either way, most people are still going to just back up to a single disk, and most users (consumers) won't have a TB to back up.... an entire TB of info that is. I have a TB and then some to myself to use but only about 600 or 700 GB are actually being taken up, and that's spread across four drives.

For myself, it's nice because i was holding off purchasing the AE Base Station, and this one seems like a better option to me. The ability to do wireless backups out of the box is what the big appeal is. Now I won't have to worry about Apple's weird firmware constraints on the AE base station.

Exactly... why it pains me even more to wait. I could have been happy with seeing a cute little consumer-ish ultra slim/portable notebook with no special features. Now I know that the MBP will get a redesign at least for Monteniva (or however the hell you spell it  ) it seems that it will get that keyboard from the Air Book that so many people have swore their lives to, and the MT trackpad.

I am going to spend the cash I was going to use on a MBP to get some photo gear and bigger RAIDed HDDs. Hopefully the company can get me a decent Mac Pro. And I will pick up a MacBook to supplement the lose of my MBP once I get the tower (a deal I made with a friend.... next machine I get, he gets my MBP :) )
