What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

...... before I get a damned refurb!

Ozzie sem starting and that's more than enough waiting done...

BTW - on a side note, anyone know how to get Final Cut pro without paying $10000000 ???

As the new MBPs didn't appear today I believe february 19th is the earliest now. :( IMHO, this looks to be Apples plan for february releases...

February 5th: iPhone 16GB and iPod Touch 32GB.
February 12th: iPhone announcement for Spain and Italy.
February 19th: OS X 10.5.2 and MBP updates.
February 26th: "backup" for OS X and MBP updates. :D

I could save $500+ on a Dell, then install OSx86.

Would that really run OS X as well as a MBP?

I mean we all know that MBP's run Windows pretty damn well (except for the battery life I think it's just as good). But how about vice versa?

I tried it a year ago on my LG laptop. Wasn't great, but I hear the x86 project has come a long way since then.

But whatever. I will see in a week.

I no longer want to get my hopes up. I am going March 4th with 24 hour shipping. That MBP is part of my B-Day present along with one of the new 32 GB iTouch's. At least that's what my parents have been saying...

this whole wait thing has made me rethink what i'm doing. i'm actually looking now at adding ram and a dual-link DVI video card to my dual 2.0 G5 powermac, and seeing how long i can make that thing last.

i also find myself wasting a lot of time on the laptop because it's so easy to carry it around the house and choose different places/seats in which to veg out and surf the web, etc. i guess i'm realizing that i'm not necessarily one of these "productively working on projects in the coffeehouse" types of people, and that i've already got a barnburner that's far from maxed out sitting under my desk.

i'm going to send my laptop to my parents this week (it's been promised them awhile back already, but i was waiting for the MBP update) and then confine my computing activity to sitting in front of my desktop in the studio while i'm home. of course, i'm on a computer at work but that's not what i'm talking about.

i think this'll be good. it'll also fulfill a resolution i'm trying to implement: doing more with less. when i'm ready, i'll upgrade out of the powermac into a blazing mbp and then i'll have the best of both worlds. for now, though, i'm realizing that with both a desktop and laptop, i'm in the "decadent luxury" zone, and it's rather unnecessary.

see y'all in a few months, new computer-wise. in the meantime, it's off to find an agp card that'll support dual-link and not cost an arm & leg, and pick up an HP 30" display...

i have a feeling i'm really going to like this; not spending the $3k is a nice perk too!

wow... I just configured an HP with the 2.5GHz T9300 Penryn (6MB cache, 800MHz FSB) for $1,349.99. 160GB HDD, 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS , DL DVD burner/lightscribe & 2GB of RAM

Interesting that when you chose to add in the Penryn instead of the Merom, the build date gets ONE DAY added on. Does that mean that HP will have the Penryn's tomorrow?

HP has been one of the first companies to adopt the Penryn chips. They've announced laptops with them already.

Yeah you COULD do the OSX86, but then you'd be a part of the Steve Jobs cat & mouse game, which gets annoying.

I have an unlocked iPhone, and I have it running the newest firmware (1.1.3), but it's pretty annoying to have to try and duck through hoops all the time - when the 3G iphone comes out, i'll jump ship to ATT just so I don't need to always run a "hack." I guess what i'm saying is that you'd have a similar experience if you ran osx86.

Negligent behaviour?

The latest I can wait would be around the 5th of March.

If Apple have not launched a revised MBP by then I may (as much as
it pains me,) oust OSX and buy a VAIO.

I reckon that the failure to update the MBP is bordering on directorial negligence. Mustering all their effort to back he MacBook Air (a more
niche product) does a great disservice to the established MBP community.

What I find weird is that prior to this morning, I didn't hear any rumors about an iPhone or iTouch memory upgrade. Did they just suddenly pop up out of nowhere or have they been around for long?

I follow Engadget every day and don't remember anything.

AFAIK, there'd been nothing until this morning...

Engadget had something up late last night. They showed a screenshot of the new iPhone. You can go back through the posts and look for it. However, they definitely didn't hint about it until like 5 hours before it was released.

the dell XPS are built really nice actually

remember that just because apple doesn't make it doesn't mean that it can't be built well

I agree that the XPS 13 and 15 are built well but Dell fails above that screen size (wobbly as hell) and they sucked all that was good and holy out of Alienware.

Conference call two weeks ago has a hint, but no definite "We will upgrade these things now" was ever uttered you're right.
