What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

Count me in for the waiting insanity. Looking to replace my Jan 05 Powerbook G4 15”, because it's just getting too old.

For those that are interested, I attached timelines (in color and black and white) of all the updates since 2001; significant and other recent events have been marked. The shade gets darker/deeper red depending on how long the product has gone without an update. Interestingly, it hasn't been that long of an update, compared to the first two Intel updates.

Thoughts?

This is where i'm a little torn. I kinda need a new computer but I can totally wait a little while longer if there will be a redesign. I'm just wishing the redesign would be a week or two from now instead of June!
Well the way I look at it is this: If they just bump the specs (Penryn), then we know they won't release a redesign too soon. Therefore, if you buy right when they bump, you'll be able to enjoy your new computer, even if they do redesign in June or whatever. The MBP is still a great machine. If you _really_ want the redesign when it comes out, you always have the option of selling it on eBay (considering that some people may not like the redesign).
At least that's how I feel. I really want this computer for college, but I want to start using it now (since my PC gets weird problems from time to time and I don't want to spend more money on it). Pretty much I can get it near end of February, but it would be best to get it ASAP :p

i mean in general, it's always a good idea to buy an apple product (not counting first gen products) right after they're released. Best way to future proof yourself.

An exception to this would be if you bought the iPhone right when it came out - but on the other hand, even though the price dropped, you still have the most current model.

Yes, I took this philosophy and bought the iPod Touch when it came out (the model without the messed up black screens). I'm glad I didn't wait, because I would have been stuck with a version I wouldn't be able to jailbreak ;)

That would be awesome

Sammy, looks like you scored an extra $50 this past weekend! Way to go champ...By the time the new MBP come out you'll probably have enough to spend on a "17 and maybe even a monitor, or an I touch or an I-I -Iwhatever cause it looks like it's gonna be a looooooooonngg-ger wait.

Definitely the case when speed bumps, but remember how issues tend to arise when a product is redesigned?

I've kept thinking since late 2004 that the next update was going to be a redesign:

I figured if the TiBooks lasted for ~2 years, then the Aluminum G4s were set to become redesigned G5s in 2005. MWSF 05 came and went with no G5 or redesign, so I just bit the bullet and switched to Mac.

WWDC 05 gave us Intel, no redesign. So I thought they'd redesign for Intel, but MWSF 06 came and we only received tweaks… not a redesign (meanwhile, the iBook received a complete redesign when it became the MacBook).

WWDC 06 gave us Leopard, no redesign. MWSF 07 gave us iPhone, no redesign. WWDC 07 gave us (more) Leopard, no redesign. And I thought certainly in MWSF 08, 5 years after the original aluminum designs, and 2 years since being changed to the MBP (and the last significant tweaks), that we'd get a new design. But we all know how that ended up…

It’s not that I hate the current designs, it’s just as soon as I buy one there will be a redesign.

Waiting till 12/Feb

I am leaving Korea on 19/Feb and I don't think it will ship on same day even if it is released on 19/Feb so I will be waiting till 12/Feb. I am not going to buy MBP in Australia when I can buy iPod nano and MBP with same money right here.

Btw how reliable is Best Buy inventory system? I heard someone saying that they initially also had MB in their inventory prior to Macworld and changed it to Macbook Air right after its release? So I am wondering if their inventory is based on rumor sites or reliable source like Apple.(I really hope it's later)

1337 post (sorry, had to do it)
I think that there's no use hoping for anything except rumors during the week and waiting for each tuesday and hoping for the best. Honestly though, what else would they do next tuesday?

Yeah, I'm starting to think maybe they will skip straight to Montevina, too. Fine with me, I can wait!

I don't see that as likely. They may do an update which is just penryn and absolutely nothing else at all, not even a trackpad change (although I think that's unlikely too myself, I expect a few small cosmetic changes like that too).

That's very similar to the 'update' we had last year where they allowed the 2.6Gz chip as an option. The engineering involved in going to penryn with no other changes is simple enough they wouldn't allow the flagship notebook to fall behind for the sake of it.

I still expect to see a real redesign later in the year when they can take size and weight out with the new Montevina, but I still expect to see a small bump soon.

Wasn't the rumor that they had something MBP-related planned for MWSF, but it just didn't make it in time? If that's the case, then if progress is far enough behind that it won't be ready for a few months, why haven't they dropped in Penryn already? The fact that we still don't have any update, especially just a plain speed-bump, makes me think something bigger is imminent.

I really hope they don't wait to the end of the year to redo the case… it’s lagging so far behind the design that they use in the rest of the Macs, especially the keyboard. It's not like they need some special event for a redesign, example being the original MacBook release.

Is Montevina really going to squeeze that much extra space out that they're going to wait that long for a redesign? Honestly, I'm hoping not.

Seriously. Seems like a Penryn CPU and something like the multitouch trackpad would've been a simple drop-in  Unless they're waiting for Penryns to be plentiful enough so that they can make the new MBPs available right away (versus announcing and making everyone wait like every other laptop manufacturer), in which case it should come quite soon, as other Penryn laptops are beginning to ship within a couple of weeks.

But Apple seems to have priority for new Intel chips…

Unless they're really in short supply (I haven't been following it that closely).

In which case they're just reading these forums and giggling because deep down inside, they love torturing us :D

mmh, it's hard to say, but it's a bit funny to see how everybody expects a case redesign with montevina.
If that is the case, the decision has been made long ago, and design is nearly ready. I mean u don't redesign the case in a couple month.
The dev/release cycle is a bit longer than that.

So the design plans must have been there long ago.

Also one may raise the question why not redesing the case now, give it a bit of a new face.

montevina might need less space, butthat does not mean a new case might optimise for that. Why should it? it's macbook pro. Who knows what apples vision is for this line. But to get it close to the air might not be the goal.

So if mon. needs less space why not use the space for other features?

Also new releases of new chipsets come more frequently than apple case redesigns. So imho they won't match the case design to tight to one specific interior (unless space is the only optimizing goal, as in the Air).

It's a macbook pro. You shouldn't need a trolley to carry it around. But as long as it has a 'nice' size it should rather try to get more features in there than make it smaller.

The mba it there to satisfy the people who like small things. The MBP should satisfy poeple who want mobile powerfull things.
(MB is for those who ran out of money ;) )

So I would not count on a case redesign with mon. chipset. I'd guess the case facelift comes sometimes, but not neccesarily with the next chipset.

cheers

Redesign?

Well here's what I think about a redesign.

I think, with all the rumors of the trackpad, that its highly probable that the new macbook pro will have the new trackpad. I also think its highly probable that they will go to the macbook/MBA styled keyboard and magnetic latch to have consistancy in design. I also hope they remove the plastic edging and make the edging like the macbook's. Besides that, I think it will be the same shape, and I hope it is because I love the current look. Montevina or more likely, Nahelem will have a big redesign in my opinion due to platform architecture.

so do you think it's possible that apple would go skinnier with Montevina?

I like your ideas ;)
I prefer the macbook keybook over the macbook pro keyboard so that would be a combination worth waiting for, for me at least....

Without a doubt Apple will update to Penryn and they wont skip to the next gen Intel CPU like some people have said. They have stopped refurbs in the UK, so i would image that it's going to happen at the latest by the end of Feb.

Just hold tight, i know it's hard!
