Sure, kind of like it was certainly going to be last tuesday, and the tuesday before that, and let's not forget macworld![]()
There's been so much talk of a form factor fitting in more appropriately with Montevina, but isn't the MBP about as thin as it can get anyway in order to accomodate dedicated video, etc? I mean, if it were any thinner, wouldn't ports be impacted? If that is the case, will Montevina really allow much more of a form factor change? And if, indeed, it can't go much thinner, why not change it now rather than later? A revision that works with Penryn would only allow more flexibility come Montevina.

This is my belief. This is basically no difference with Penryn: I can't see apple modifying the line for this.

I can almost see Apple skipping a Penryn MBP altogether, introducing MBA's features (SSD, mag latch, multi-touch, illuminated new-style keyboard) in the Montevina model
I think you'll see a major revision to the MBP in Jan 09 with the next Intel generation. The MBP is still a very well designed laptop and don't forget it is their professional line. I don't understand this consumer urge to constantly redesign products, it isn't actually very rational. It's also the road to poor design as manufacturers try to add more and more flashy items to their designs. I wouldn't want to see a glowing LED covered MBP.
As for the MBA keyboard it's great for it's intended market however for those who will use their laptop professionally for several hours a day I can't help feeling that Apple will stick with a full sized keyboard for the MBP.
Ever considered the 2.6GHz option WAS the "stopgap measure"?
It makes perfect sense from a brand marketing point of view.
Apple will want to keep the MBA unique in certain areas for the first 6 to 9 months to push sales towards it.
I doubt you will see multitouch trackpad on a speed bump MacBook Pro.
You will see it in a redesign but I personally think this is a ways off: current MacBook Pros are selling very well for Apple.
Just my meek and humble opinion.

That link missed the newest iMacs!
As has been already stated, there is no reason for Apple to let their notebook line lag behind when upgrading to Penryn is a simple drop-in. Regardless if it actually makes a difference, if Apple wants to remain competitive from a marketing standpoint, they need to add Penryn (especially since this is a pro laptop). One of the reasons for switching to Intel was to bring Macs up to sync with PC manufacturers.
Exactly. MBP technology has been lagging behind for some time now. Its not that the MBP should get an update to remain competitive, its that apple HAS to update the MBP to compete with some of the windows laptops out there. The MBP will hopefully be my first mac, but if Apple doesnt come out with a major update soon, I just can't justify the MBP price when there are laptops like the dell XPS m1330 (now shipping w/ penryn) with better specs for cheaper prices. The MBP is the premium, latest "pro" series for Mac, and thus the technology should reflect it. Sure OSX is much better than vista, but not enough to justify a premium price for older technology. Hopefully the update will bring more than just Penryn CPU's.
