I can't say that the the MBP/PB casing is not durable. A friend of mine had an accident with a motorcycle and he had a 15 inch PB G4 in his regular back pack. The case of the PB just had depression at one corner and the book is still running today.Your points are well taken, it is certainly not the newest technology in the world, however for myself, it would take a hell of a lot to make me ditch the mac platform.
Regardless, my wife and I are both teachers, and are both in need of new macs. She has a 12" PB and I have an original MB (2.0). I have not had an aluminum mac since my PB 1.25, so I guess I was wondering... is the alum case really that much more easily damageable? I teach in a rough school, however I want this to be my only machine.
I must confess, I love the bloody Air, and if it had a slightly faster 2.5" drive in it, I would grab it is a second. I have just got too many friends at Apple who say that roughly 1/3 of those 1.8" drives die in less than 18 months!
Anyway, I would appreciate your thoughts...

In my opinion the MBP/PB casing is one of the most solid laptop cases I know. Ok you can grab a Panasonic ThoughBook, but that can't run OS X
A MBP should be a good choice regarding your needs, of course you could buy a PC laptop as mentioned above, but I don't believe that the plastic cases of modern laptops would be as durable as the aluminum case of the MBP.
Back to topic:
This aluminum indeed is a factor that still devides upper-mid-range laptops from the MBP, but only the casing and some more ports do not generate double the price, so lets hope that Apple updates in the next two weeks and everyone can grab a new ingeniouse MBP.
