What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

definetly waiting for penryn. I just got the promise of a mbp for my birthday, which was feb 11, so i decided why not wait, because i hope it will be worth it!

Exactly. MBP technology has been lagging behind for some time now. Its not that the MBP should get an update to remain competitive, its that apple HAS to update the MBP to compete with some of the windows laptops out there. The MBP will hopefully be my first mac, but if Apple doesnt come out with a major update soon, I just can't justify the MBP price when there are laptops like the dell XPS m1330 (now shipping w/ penryn) with better specs for cheaper prices. The MBP is the premium, latest "pro" series for Mac, and thus the technology should reflect it. Sure OSX is much better than vista, but not enough to justify a premium price for older technology. Hopefully the update will bring more than just Penryn CPU's.

Had to check that out for myself and was impressed until I came across the video card...

No thanks.

Ugh I tried opening Lightroom to work on some RAW photos, and my G4 is just unable to handle it. Is it Tuesday yet? I am half tempted to just pick up a MBP at my local Retail store tomorrow. :(

I can’t remember… does Apple Retail offer educational discounts?

Usually, yes, but you need to show some student ID and such (unlike online which doesn't check at all). Just make conversation with the salesmen and talk about your student needs and such, and they'll likely throw in some random freebee discounts or other stuff (depending on how nice the employee is).

Yes, like ecstasy at a bar in 1984.

Seriously, I got an edu discount and had been out of college for 2 years. They also discounted Applecare basically to free. I was quite up front about my budget limitation ($3K flat for the 17" MBP) and they made it happen for that after tax with Applecare. They want to sell computers, and they still made a pretty penny from me.

This may sound strange but stridder do you have an account on roosterteeth.com? I know a mac user on there named stridder as well.

Ha, no I don't, and that is a bit strange. The reason I use 2 "d"'s is because (long ago when making my first email account) "Strider" was taken, so I added another "d" for funsies. Guess I wasn't the only one with that idea.

So, let me see if I got this...you are not required to show any proof you're a college student to get the education discount? I mean, I am, but what's stopping anyone else from abusing this?

Online, I don't believe any proof is required. In an Apple store, it's like being carded for alcohol. It just depends on your salesperson. If you look like a 40 year old homeless man, they will likely want to see your student ID.

[ QUOTE=rols]
Even as a pure stopgap measure just to keep people buying the product, they will do the upgrade, even if they are intending on a complete line revamp later in the year.[/QUOTE]

Ever considered the 2.6GHz option WAS the "stopgap measure"?

No I didn't think so, I thought it was a sign that when a new, faster chip is available which will work in the current line, they made it available. Penryn's pretty much like that, they can drop it in today.

It'd be nice to have some of the fun features, although I'm still not sold on multitouch, but if they only bump the processor, that'll be enough for me to buy. The extra battery life and hopefully cooler running will be a bonus and I'll feel a little future-proofed with the additional instruction set on the chip. That should see me fine for another 4-5 years.

Patience is a Virtue

the macbook pro will be updated when its updated. thats how i try and stop myself going mad. i do hope its updated in the next couple of weeks or so.

But beleive me, it'll make you more mad. See, here's how it is:

MBP update date = x

f(X!)+(Y^1/2)-Z= (X^3 + Y^2+Z)180

See, you take the square root of Y which incapacitorialy substitutes the quantity of X, and then Y is sequentially......

Ok, now I'm going crazy... :p

And you get the same SR performance at half the price at the moment. Here in Germany you can grab a MSI MegaBook GX600-7226VH at a price of 899 € (about 1320 US$ incl. VAT). The MBP is priced 1899 € (about 2788 US$ incl. VAT).
The overall GX600 spec can be found here:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?...1307&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=271&cat3_no=#menu
The revision I mentioned above is described here:
http://www.notebooksbilliger.de/product_info.php/msi_megabook_gx6007226vhp
Its a german website, but the specs should be readable to anyone ;)

Or look at the Dell XPS 1530. However I will wait with best hopes on the new MB Pro :D

"I just can't justify the MBP price when there are laptops like the dell XPS m1330:"

No offense meant, but who are these people who are sitting on the fence, and about to jump over to Dell for a lousy 200 mhz? I mean, perhaps having been solely a mac user for 10 years gives me a little bit more context, but if we are talking about a lack of competitiveness here, things have surely been much much worse... no?

I would argue that if one CAN ditch the mac platform for 200 mhz in chip speed, then they probably should, because they are receiving little value from it. The mac is a system, and that system is spearheaded by OSX. Will my dell M1330 run Final Cut Pro faster with its Penryn?

Sorry for the rant, but I have just been seeing more and more of these posts recently, almost all from 1st time mac users...

but I don't mean you no disrespect!

You are looking at a High End Laptop (MBP) vs a standard laptop. You aren't compairing the right products.

I can speak for myself. I have a hard time purchasing a CPU that is over 9 months old when intel has released a new CPU. Plus the increase in battery life and once programs are written to take full advantage of the SSE4 Instruction set you will see a 30% increase in Video/Audio encoding based on first looks from third parties that have gotten there hands on the beta chips.

Will my dell M1330 run Final Cut Pro faster with its Penryn?
No because you cannot legally run it on a M1330. No because at this point it hasn't been recompiled to take the advantage of the new Instruction Sets.

It is not only about the CPU power, the overall specs of the current SR MBP match Upper-Mid-Range Notebooks today and we are talking about a top class Professional Notebook here.

And by switching to Intel Processors Apple has to compete with other manufacturers. OS X is a big advantage in Work-Flow and Performance, but there are areas where only the hardware specs decides what has to be bought.

why some MR members keep wanting a Dell?

Seriously Guys?
Why don't you do that in dell rumors forums?

When Dell comes out with DellOS and be something "comparable" to MacOSX, only after that we may see any value on discussing a Dell vs a Mac.
This thread has become so long for discussing a Dell?
Open other threads in the right spot if you want that!

Back on the MBP rumor: what do you guys think about this: the reason why we have been waiting for so long is because :apple: has managed to secretly develop with Intel a new mobile processor that isn't announced yet and will be revealed during the rumored event by the end of this month, it may be smaller, more powerful/faster, efficient in power comsumption, so we will get the latest and greatest mac portable ever.

Dell wishers please understand that what most of us who visit this forum are only interested in macs, that is why we visit macrumors.
I'm open to good discussion in the right area of this forum.

The reason DELL is mentioned here is, because Apple has to compare its hardware to others. Most people know that most Pro-Apps are also availible for Windows or Linux and they move away from the Mac plattform as some peope from these forums already did, beause they did not want to go on waiting for new MBPs to arrive.

I'm Mac User since 3 years now and I do not want to switch back to Windows.

Your points are well taken, it is certainly not the newest technology in the world, however for myself, it would take a hell of a lot to make me ditch the mac platform.

Regardless, my wife and I are both teachers, and are both in need of new macs. She has a 12" PB and I have an original MB (2.0). I have not had an aluminum mac since my PB 1.25, so I guess I was wondering... is the alum case really that much more easily damageable? I teach in a rough school, however I want this to be my only machine.

I must confess, I bloody love the Air, and if it had a slightly faster 2.5" drive in it, I would grab it is a second. I have just got too many friends at Apple who say that roughly 1/3 of those 1.8" drives die in less than 18 months!

Anyway, I would appreciate your thoughts...

R.

You forgot to throw in to integrate the entire equation! And why not have a couple e(-x)'s in there?!

I think one thing we ALL need to notice is that Dell isn't SHIPPING their Penryn laptops, yet!

They're listing some of their ship dates anywhere between 20-22 February.

So, Yes :)
