Montevina is not a processor, it's a platform. Penryn is the processor and yes, the iMacs already have it (the processor).

Yes. I know. I was confused as to whether the imacs already had the processors slated to be released along side montevina (the next wave of penryns). We should start seeing some notebooks with these newer processors fairly soon.

Montevina is a platform, not a processor. Montevina will continue to use Penryns.
See this link.

I understand that Montevina is a platform and they will continue to use the Penryn architecture, but wouldn't a Montevina/Penryn processor have a different serial number than a Santa Rosa/Penryn processor? They must be physically distinct pieces of equipment, with different serial numbers. I suspect they will have slightly different specs, speeds, and pricing, but that is not guaranteed. That is what I am looking for info about.

Are you saying the specs will remain the exact same when the Montevina/Penryn replaces the Santa Rosa/Penryn? I don't believe that, because when Santa Rosa replaced Napa there were all kinds of changes and upgrades. In fact, people say that the change to Montevina will be so large that it will prompt a MacBook Pro redesign. That is just speculation, but it shows that the change is real and not so tiny.

God damn, every day, atleast once, i check that Buyer's Guide for any new news about the MBPS, its been a long ass time since the last news....

People say the new mbp redesign will require a macworld speech or what not, but the iMacs got a re-design and didn't have it so...
did the re-designed iMacs come out before or after the February update to the mb's and mbp's?

Yeah, they did. There was a Stevenote for them. iLife and iWork '08 were released with the aluminum iMacs in August 2007; long before the current MacBook Pros.

Yes, they'll have different serials. The Penryn processors included in the Montevina plateform are NOT the same as the Penryn processors in the Santa Rosa. The Montevina Penryns are the second generation Penryns with an improved FSB and lower energy usage.

Stop checking for news on a new MacBook Pro everyday. Just go on with your lives and forget about it for a while, then before you know it, the update/redesign will happen. It's like watching water boil.

Why is the serial number important?

Did you click on the link? Quote: "a second-generation Intel Core 2 Duo (code-named Penryn) 45nm processor with 1066 MT/s FSB with clock speeds ranging from 2.26 GHz to 3.06 GHz, also featuring SSE4.1 support, which adds 47 new instructions to SSSE3. It is planned to consume no more than 29W, compared to Merom's and first-generation Penryn's 34W TDP."

my water boils really quick, in less then one minute :D
(for my morning cafe) :p

Me too

Penryn is not even out yet and already jumping the boat to Montevina?

i just can wish you guys happy waiting, and i wish i had the patient like you guys
but i dont :(

I have to agree. I too am having a hell of a time waiting.

Intel is still stuck with only one fab that can produce 45nm CPUs (Fab 35). The Israeli fab (Fab 28) has still not come online yet and might be delayed into 2009. And Fab 11X (in New Mexico) is still undergoing conversion and also will not be at full capacity until 2009. The Hillsboro R&D fab is 45nm, but it's output is quite restricted compared to the main ones.

Now, with Apple being such a small customer (in comparison to OEMs like Dell and HP), they might be able to get 45nm Penryns for Montevina and Nehalem's sooner rather then later, but they might also end up experiencing supply restrictions which could preclude them from launching product as early as they originally planned.

Its frustrating for me because even though I hate waiting for this update, I don't even have a choice in the matter because I won't have enough $$$ to buy my MBP until late August anyways! So i'm doing this whole waiting and speculating thing...even though it doesn't matter if they release it before then!

I made an image in Photoshop how the new macbook Montevina could look like whit the new case rumor and the other rumors out there:

Could you make that anodized black now? :D

Pretty cool. I don't expect HDMI in the Macs until ACDs support the same, though I've been waiting on HDCP Cinema Displays forever... I gave up yesterday and bought a Dell 2709w....so that's Apple's cue to release new ACDs tomorrow  :p

I also don't expect BR in Macs until burners become more affordable either. They're evidently holding out for burners to play on Blu-Ray's data capacity aspects rather than high-definition movies (conflict of interests!)

I'd appreciate the magnetic latch, and larger trackpad... well, maybe not that big!
