no, apple has a deal/contracts with intel, sj said the intel will be the only one for their processors

So you think Intel has contracted with Apple so that Apple cannot use AMD ATI products for graphics?

Is that legal? Given Intel doesn't even make graphics card which are not integrated

(ie, their only reason would be to starve AMD ATI of money by Apple not choosing them).

When is this update happening? Is it in one month or something? If not, Im going to buy mine now and order it in Hong Kong.

What's new about the update? New design, lighter laptop, ???

When is the rumored time for it to come?

great post. :D

you forgot to mention that immediately after the release people will complain about the GPU.

Thanks, I'm glad someone appreciated it. :)

Yep, you're right about the GPU - the same thing happened when the original Aluminium iMacs were released. Although the latest updates definitely make up for that.

In all fairness the NVIDIA 8600M GT was actually a very good card when it was unveiled with the MBPs last year, especially considering the thinness of the case. I hope they carry on in the same tradition with the new updates.

Although if they DON'T update the graphics card just prepare yourself for the reaction ... ;)

I went to FutureShop today and carefully looked at the MacBook Pros. Usually I just quickly glance at them, but this time I studied them. I was impressed, and it made me want to jump the gun and buy one.

BUT I've waited this long...

I was a bit disappointed by the resolution on the 15". Besides that, looks good! Also, I like the keyboard compared to the MacBook...

What's wrong with the current res?

..this coming from a 4 year old thinkpad user who is at 1024x768

Oh by the way...

Count me down for the wait. Need it for college! Please be here in July/August...

Add me to the list also.

I'm heading to Orlando to work at Disney for 6 months starting October...

I really want to upgrade my PowerBook before I go... but some people are saying wait until I'm over there.

Can anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages of buying one before I go?

Advantage: I'l get it there and then, and it'll be brand new and not a couple of months down the line (if an August release).

Disadvantage: I'll probably be paying more for it in the UK.

GPUs have short shelf lives as it is, but the 8600 GTs was about as short as I can think of in recent memory, it's really been left far far behind by now, there are plenty of alternatives, from both ATI and NVidia.

I have no idea what GPU Apple will likely use in the new MBPs if it does indeed upgrade it, but if they don't upgrade it, then the MBP does not deserve the moniker of "Pro" anymore, simple as that, and should be priced £300. Having your fastest laptop gimped by a 8600 GT would be moronic.

Tell you guys what if I get the lucky update I will be extremely happy but if I dont then I will still have to order mine in September online via the Hong Kong store because I will need it for my 2nd year in Uni doing my design course back in the UK...

So fingers cross update in July / August ( that is me being super optimistic with Apple :apple:)

But knowing Apple... July/August updates are unlikely well I guss my pain will be ease by the fact that I am getting a free iPod Touch....

Oh, you'll definitely be paying more for it here in the UK. The US price, even factoring in state tax is only about equivalent to the UK price with a generous HE discount. If you can grab it in the US tax free online (or in a tax exempt state like Delaware), you're laughing. A good £250-350 cheaper I'm guessing.

Advantage: Good ol' British keyboard? :D

Anyone got a picture of the difference, I didn't even know there was a difference.

If that's all the main difference is (the keyboard) and its not a huge inconvenience then (if a new MBP is launched) my first stop in orlando will be an Apple Store.

US Keyboard doesn't have the ~, ` key next to Z, and so the left shift is longer. The return button is a rectangle shape like the right shift button

ok so I have a friend that can get me a deal, and that parts not important. But if you were me, what option would you choose?:

A. Low-end MBP for $1800 with Ipod touch

B. Mid-range MBP for $1999 with NO ipod touch

Any suggestions would help. Thanks its a hard decision, because setting money aside, do I want an ipod touch or 512 mb of vram?

Is the 8600M really that lousy?
If i'm using it for engineering programs and a few video games, will I be ok for 4 years?

If the only thing different between the two MacBook Pros are 512 vs 256, I would go with the 256 + iPod Touch. Unless your doing heavy graphic work or (really) high-end gaming I don't think you'll notice a difference.

That's cool, there isn't a lot of differences between the two keyboard... and buying it in the US and saving a huge amount will more than make up for a different style of return key.
As for the other one: ~ I never use it... another thing I did notice is that there's no £... on the uk its above number 3 and the $ is above number 4.

Do you think there will be a £ symbol somewhere?

If he wants to play Crysis he'll need it.

mmm... I doubt it. I don't think the 8600M GT has enough core power to fully utilise more than 256 MB VRAM. Best bet is to just check some comparisons.

But if you're really a heavy gamer, you REALLY want to wait for the Montevina update in a month or so for the almost inevitable graphics update.

And is that keyboard a US keyboard? It is identical to mine, and I live in Australia. I thought we had different keyboards???

And yeah, WTF is with the guy who claims NVIDIA GPUS are all Apple is going to use because
apple has a deal/contracts with intel, sj said the intel will be the only one for their processors
? Does the iMac not count? I think the Montevina MBPs will come with the AMD 3600. Clearly this Apple statement is in reference to CPUs, and has absolutely nothing to do with GPUs. Some Mac Pros, and older MBPs also use Intel CPUs and AMD GPUs. AMD have also made a 3850 specially for the Mac Pro. Errr, QED?

The ~ key is still there on US layout, but it's next to the 1 key now instead of UK's utterly pointless § key...Alt+3 on a UK keyboard creates #.... maybe it creates £ on a US keyboard?

Differences are 2.5GHz instead of 2.4, 250GB HDD instead of 200GB, 6MB cache instead of 3MB and 512MB GPU instead of 256.

True, the 8600M GT is completely useless. Probably the most gimped card in recent laptop history.

Seeing that thing in Apple's fastest laptops on sale is pretty embarrassing.
