Some of those mock-ups are great! I agree on the keyboard and trackpad, that's what they will do. Apple is predictable and they like uniformity among products. I can't wait to have multi-touch on my laptop, just like my iPhone:D. I have a MB now, but as my projects get bigger, I feel like it's getting overwhelmed. I'll admit though, my MB has handled like a champ, even though the Apple store said it wouldn't handle what I do. I also use it as a desktop with an ext. HD 24" monitor, keyboard and mouse, great setup! Can't decide between a 15" or a 17" though. If they add new physical features with all the benefits of Montevina, I'll be getting one of the two for sure. Any thoughts on which size to get? I carry it alot (hence liking my MB's weight and size), but when I use it, I'm running visually-intensive stuff and could use a bigger, hi-res screen when I'm not at home.....decision, decisions:rolleyes:.

Please read your thread which informs you on that topic.

Can I see an official press release?

Of course you can't. They won't announce it ahead of time.

Intel's next release

Announcements from manufacturer's on release dates for Montevina based notebooks:
SONY
ASUS
SAMSUNG
PC Microworks' Edge
SANTECH

So, by a simple assumption that since all of these use Intel chips, and Intel is coming out with new chips...and since all of these companies are updating their computers, you can pretty much assume all of them are. I'm sure I left some out too, but I think that's plenty.

Snow Leopard

So is it safe to say that since there wasn't an update at WWDC that they next update will be when they release Snow Leopard in Summer 2009?

The black chicklet keys just stick out too much. Not a good idea IMO...but what do I know. I love the current gen keyboard.

Using a Macbook Air right now. The 'chicklet black keys' are great! They have better feedback and the sharper edges on each key make finding your way around the keys much easier. Cleaning the keyboard is a simple swipe.

Exactly. The MacBook Pro's will not be updated on the 14th. Just because the chip is being released does not mean Apple will be jumping into it quickly like most of you assume.

Well, what other assumption is there? If every other manufacturer is releasing on or close to July 14th, why would Apple wait? Even if they do wait... a safe assumption would be that they won't wait more than...what, 2 months at most past when they release the chip? If Intel releases chips every 6 months, why would you wait too much longer after, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. My guess is they will release in August or September latest. When are you thinking they will release it? Just curious since you haven't given any sort of time frame by saying what won't happen instead of what you think will happen.

I had to log-in to express something that has been overlooked. I want a CTO/BTO SSD option. Here's the twist...not so that I can empty my bank account buying Apple's drive. I want the hardware and software to understand an SSD so that a year from now when a 128GB SSD is $200 I can swap it in 'plug-n-play.'

I don't understand all the popularity of the SSD. In their current forms, they offer little if any changes besides a huge price increase. In fact, tests have shown that current gen SSDs drain battery life faster in many cases. Also, it won't be that difficult to insert a SSD into the space where your previous HDD was.

In related news, Samsung's new MLC 64/128GB SSDs will be awesome.

Not until the latest student promotion (Buy an iMac and get an iPod) is over.

Gotta clear those shelves - out with the old, before you bring in the new, that's the way you do it....money for nothin' on the MTC......

I haven't read this entire thread, but I just realized getting a Mac Pro right now is a scary prospect since it's been out for a little while already, the 3870s are in limited supply, and no one knows when it will get a Nehalem-based refresh.

With Montevina coming up for laptops, this next Macbook Pro will surely come out soon and stay a great machine for at least a year since Nehalem-based notebook processors are slated for Q3 09. And with the rumors of major physical redesigns, it sounds like the perfect time to get one.

I'm hoping this new Macbook Pro will have a better graphics card than the 8600M GT. Since NVIDIA is already in the GTX 200 series, and Apple doesn't have any products with the 9 series yet, they're a little overdue. I'm thinking 9600M GS, 9600M GT, or 9650M GS.

Maybe it'll be an ATI card! Did the 8600M GT suck at Core Image like the 8800 GT? Mobility Radeons aren't too shabby right now.

Fortunately our academic year begins a little bit later and the 'free iPod' promotion runs at about the same time new iPods actually hit shelves. :D

I'd be happy with a 9600m GT. It's basically the updated version of their current current card with a shrink from 80 to 65 nm. It's quite a difference.

Not necessarily; didn't new iMacs come out last year during the same promotion?

I would expect to see new Macbooks shortly after Montevina is out. Apple must have working prototypes already.

People are guessing at end of August / Early September based on previous time between chip release and laptop refreshes. Also, the chipset was supposed to be release earlier and was delayed, which means that Apple probably had the prototype / design / etc. before hand for this refresh. It's all up in the air.

Gaah! Extreme performance increases, especially for those designed to. It seems inevitable that SSDs will quickly overtake capacities of traditional HDDs, especially once the multi layer SSD technology improves. The costs will of course plummet, as Intel and other SSD makers move to smaller die sizes, and more people buy them. The same companies have also said they are going to address the power problem, so I would suggest that SSDs will quite quickly regain their powersaving crown. I reckon they aren't worth it yet, but they soon will be.
Once reliability and read-write cycles are dealt with, I can certainly imagine in-drive RAID options coming out. Imagine how awesome (and expensive) a four times 256 GB striped + 1 parity, all encrypted would be! All in a single 2.5 inch enclosure, of course, perfect for my next MBP!
And that Samsung one looks pretty awesome.

Apple's next-gen MacBook Pro casing design revealed

For those who have not seen, this is probably how the new MBP's will look like.

If the rumor about user replaceable HDD/SSD will come true it would be one of those features worth waiting for.

MacMall Clearance

Not sure if this means anything but I received an e-mail telling me MacMall is offering a new clearance sale. Not sure if they know any information that some people don't but they seem to be selling the MacBook Pro on clearance. Might be a little hint, or just a fluke who knows.
