Basically, most people right now would be waiting for the upcoming Montevina+Penryn combo, or the Montevina+Nehalem. I'm waiting until Montevina+Nehalem, or one after that. My MBP is an SR+Merom, as can be seen in my signature, and it'll still last me for a bit.

Yeap. Personally, I'll be signing off of Montevina, and I'll be waiting up on Nehalem next year. My SR MacBook Pro is still top spec, a 4GB model with BTO 2.6GHz and 250GB BTO, so I should be able to hold off. Let's hope Nehalem doesn't get hot as quickly as the SR with wireless on, at which point it becomes a StoveBook Pro...

Last you a while in what sense? Being cool or working efficiently?

Because I really can't see what the big deal is, if it works what's the problem?

I have a MBP 2nd Generation (Merom but no santa rose), 2.33ghz w/ 256 X1600 graphics. I am waiting until June-July-August or whenever the next refresh occurs to grab my new machine, mine seems fine now, plenty of power for what i do (upgraded the hard drive, and memory myself to squeeze more juice out of it)....The next upgrade should be a nice one at that..

Montevina brings useful new features, but you will wait a long time for Nehalem!

Processors for laptops based on the new Nahalem core are not due till 2009, if you want one of those then you will be waiting a whole year I think.
Montevina improves FSB speed, allows DDR3 (lower power consumption) and will feature WiMAX, which Apple has not yet commited to. There isn't much else which is different from the SR chipset. Only you can decide if thats worth waiting 4-5 months for.;)

Honestly I could care less about montevina. I just want a mabook pro case redesign. I can't believe it didn't come already. Taking the whole laptop apart to swap out the HD is a bummer. I do that alot. Constantly upgraded to larger size. That and some new tech.

Well really, heat CAN be a b*tch, but without wireless, this doesn't seem to be a problem. Come on, are you saying the once top-of-the-line MBP (arguably still is, albeit without multitouch) can't last me another year (just in time for Nehalem)? I just can't think which would be more worth the wait: Montevina + Nehalem, or Nehalem+Centrino 4(whatever comes after montevina)

im waiting for a mbp with 1920x1200 resolution & 10core prcoessor system
where is that thread?

So I think I've decided that I can hold out as long as mid-July, as long as my four-year-old Vaio doesn't die on me. I've just had to promise all my friends that I'll shut up about MacBook Pros at least until WWDC in June.

But I have some questions:

Will we see noticeable performance increases with Montevina? I would like my next laptop to last me another four years.

Will there be a significant difference in power consumption with DDR3 RAM? I know that Penryn is supposed to have made some improvements already, but can we see tremendous improvements in battery life with Penryn and Montevina together? I know it probably doesn't matter to most people, but I'd actually like to see a smaller power adapter on the MBP if they can significantly cut down the power consumption.

I've looked around for DDR3 RAM, and it looks like it's still really expensive. With DDR2, I can max out a current MBP for less than $100. How long should I expect to wait for prices to drop on DDR3?

I'd like to see a case redesign, but if it doesn't happen, I'll live. I've just seen people mention in forums that Montevina will make for a much smaller motherboard, but I haven't seen anything about this in the articles I've read. Is this just the hope that people go through every summer when Intel releases a new platform?

By the way, I also loved Waiting for Godot. :D

You can add me to this list. I was unimpressed with the lack of....

Bluray
Case Redesign
300gb Drive that's not 4200rpm and only available for the 17" - Apple = Joke on this matter!

I would imagine that Bluray will only get released when the case and LCD get redesigned.

So here's to June/July or maybe August!!!!!!

Actually, I think I just decided I'm gonna wait until Nehalem... The MBP in my sig won't be 1 year-old for another couple weeks. Heck, I might even go an entirely different route & get an iMac once Nehalem ships (especially if there's a 30" version).

I have been running the same ibook g4 for almost four years, and it is killing me. Unfortunately I am poor, and have to save up slowly to afford my new MBP. So once I get about $2500 saved up I will buy it. That should definitely not be until Montevina, and maybe (hopefully) Nehalem. I know that once I ge the cash i won't be patient enough to wait anymore though, so here's hoping for fast updates and a case redesign soon.

i think its crazy that we are already starting this!!! but put me on the list! I'm going to get a MBP for college and I want to get what is best then since my MacBook CD is doing pretty well

Does anyone else want the MBP that will be released at WWDC with Montevina+Nehalem to get rid of the Superdrive and offer either support for DVD burner or more hard drive space. I would love 3 300GB hard drives and download any high def movies or regular movies and programs rather than from an optical mediam.. and with iTunes -> Apple TV and the like, I would rather have digital media rather than rely on media formats like Blu-ray or even the futuristic HVD!

we are going to wait for a while...but hopefully it will be out after WWDC 08 because I want to get it before we are too far into the summer!

Case redesign please!

Hope to get it when Montivena is out! with free iPOD or iPhone deal??

Win win!!

Dilemma!!!!

Blast this is a hard decision for me:

A. I could get the current MBP in a month by my birthday and have it to use ALL summer! I still love the current design.

B. Wait for the next model. What if I don't like the new design. But maybe it'll be better looking? But I don't really want an air styled design. I like the curved rectangle look of the MBPs and MBs. However, regardless of how amazing the new design may look, what about all the issues there could be. The last thing I want to do is be fixing my computer all the time in college.

I really don't think I personally will notice a performance update with Montevina and I don't think the specs will change much. People keep saying it will be thinner, but here's why I disagree:

1. Mac laptops already have heating issues. Make the thing any smaller and it'll overheat (BAD!).
2. The nvidia 8600M is about the best that can fit and the 8800M is larger and creates more heat. Apple needs to future proof itself. If they get too ahead of themselves and make every thing super thin, there will be no room for extra features. Its better to have more space for extra features, than make an already very thin laptop thinner. Honestly, anyone who thinks 1" is too thick needs to take a shopping trip through the PC isle and compare.
3. if they make it thinner, it may resemble the Air's style (all curvy and such). While the air looks amazing, on a larger laptop, all the weird curves make not look right and may make the computer look too complicated and I associate Apple's design with simple. Simple usually is better. What is it I hate about the look of every PC laptop? All the stuff. Too many designs, to busy, and too clunky. I love that when you close a MB or MBP the whole thing is symetric and smooth. Also I'd rather have a solid laptop than one that resembles a wedge from the side (slopes from 1" to .5" or something)

But its a hard decision. I don't want to buy now then see the new one and wish I'd waited. Yet if the new is nothing special, I'll wish I'd bought already.

PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR 2 CENTS!!!! Also does anyone have evidence for a redesign this summer. What if they wait until Nahelem. or will Nahelem premier on the Montevina Platform. Also this mumbo jumbo of the Air raising the bar for Apple's designs. HOW? THe air is a bare minimum computer. You can't create a notebook like the Air and fit the Pro's specs. So what of the air besides keyboard, magnetic latch, and bigger trackpad would they put? Make it curvier?

Also I'm quite an impatient person. For the last moth practically all I can think about is the MBP! If I wait till June I'll have wasted SO much time reading these forums.

I've already had to promise my friends that if I don't buy a computer now, I won't talk about MBPs for the next 3-4 months.

As for the case redesign, one thing that looks promising is that the Montevina platform is supposed to allow for significantly smaller motherboards. As far as overheating goes, it looks like the innovations in Penryn and Montevina have generally focused on reducing size, heat, and power consumption. With that done, next year's releases will be about performance.

I'm waiting for a mbp in 2012 where there wont be upgraded cores anymore from intel.

Instead we will use nanotechnology combined with parts of real human brain that are intertwined with circuitry in our laptops which actually produces new cores for us every month for unlimited amounts of cores. While there are computer eye balls on the bottom of our dock that follows us and watches us while we surf the net and compute!!

I have the same problem you do. My friends and family are getting tired of me talking about it.
But I have some questions:

Probably like the rest, just a 5-10% increase. Not a big deal to me. I don't think I'll notice.
I know it probably doesn't matter to most people, but I'd actually like to see a smaller power adapter on the MBP if they can significantly cut down the power consumption.
Actually from what I've learned of electronics that adapter converts your AC power in your house to DC. Part of it lowers the voltage to the right amount for your computer. SO a laptop that consumes more power would actually probably be bigger unless better smaller technology was put in it.

I had the same question...Is there really going to be a design. plus June seems too close to now. I'm thinking the new one may not be out until fall.

You can add me to the list as well. The speed increases aren't my concern, there's more than enough power in laptops today to fulfill the large majority of our needs. I'm more into waiting for Montevina because of the hopes of a new case design. Granted, the current design of the MBP case is great and has last for years for a reason, if I were to purchase one now and a few months later it were to be completely overhauled, I'd be upset. Imagine how you might feel if you purchased a 2008 model of a car and in 2009 they decide to change it completely.

I always would be excited to see Blu-Ray, HDMI, perhaps some more USB ports? I'm sure whatever the new MBP has to offer, I'll be happy. They'll always be detractors, especially in these forums!

waiting for a different reason

Well unless there actually is a major case redesign, I might wait for Montevina just so I can get a current gen macbook pro for cheap. With all the buzz about iphones I'm beginning to wonder whether there will be a major design change or whether WWDC will focus on the iphone.

my ibook is on its last legs, so ill definitaly be buying the $2k model the day it comes out.
