The smart thing for Apple to do would be to take some of the height off the display, then they could add a couple of mm to the bottom case and still keep it an inch thick, all the while bumping up the specs with the added space.
Aren't most LED displays thinner than the MacBook Pro's display?

Doesn't this kind of contradict your own words about not expecting more than a mid range GPU..... and apple's entire history?
What I WANT and what I THINK Apple will release are two different things.

I have a question: do you think the new MBP will have a BlueRay player ? ;)

There's a simple rule for these sorts of questions: has it been available in PC laptops half the price of the MBP for over a year?

Answer: a few months short of a year. So maybe not.

It was a joke. I asked this "question" because it has been already asked like 100 times in 100 different posts ;) and sportguy0913 had just said

Enough of this pointless ranting on asking when it will come out! [...] So chill people!

The current gen macbook pro's recently went down in price on the refurb site...
could be due to an update coming...
they did that w/ the newest imac update...
they lowered the prices on the refurb site...
and like a month later
BAM
new iMacs...

i really would buy that machine...
the thing is...
is that stupid video card.

Other useful metrics:
9/7/2008 -- Buyer's Guide average date for MBP
9/9/2008 -- 8 weeks after Montevina announcement

I wanted to add these to the discussion because I'm getting tired of seeing the September-16th-because-the-back-to-school-promo-ends-on-the-15th rumors. That reasoning ignores the MBP's, iMacs, and Minis released during the promo just last year, and the iMacs and released during the promo in 2004, but it might happen to coincide this year.

I think the average update date would be on the early end, given the trend to increasing times between updates. There are a couple of short update cycles that pull down the average around the Intel transition (like the 17" announcement at NAB).

The 8-weeks after the Montevina announcement metric comes from the 8-week lag between the Penryn announcement and the announcement of the Penryn macbook pros. I don't have any more data on the time between when Intel announces something and when it gets incorporated into an Apple laptop, maybe that would be a nice thing to add to the Buyer's Guide someday.

You haven't been around here long, right? :D

Apple is just like any other company in that they clear out old stock before bringing in the new. The free iPod with Mac purchase for college students promo ends September 15th (a monday). It is most likely that they will release the new MacBooks and iPods on the 16th (tuesday) or the tuesday after. So chill people!

New product announcements have been made during the BTS promotion in the past - just last year for example.

No official option. You can buy a drive that fits into the 17" MBP but they're like $1000 aren't they?

Better off just buying a Blu-Ray player.

Or a PS3 and MGS4 for $399 or something. I want that even more than a new MBP.

On the whole, this MacBookPro that I bought 16-17 months ago has been the best laptop I have ever bought.

Very reliable, Very fast for the most part, and gets everything done that I need to get done.

If I had to ask for improvements, I would just say to continue speed wise and RAM wise. I don't need massive hard drives but I am sure some may for work or personal use.

If they want to make the insert/eject more quiet....so be it but that has never bothered me or anyone else around me

All I know is that Apple better make these new MBP's reallyyyy nice looking. I was just looking at the Dell that my school is "recommending" and I must say, Dell has come a long way. I bet the new MBP will knock its socks off, though!

I dunno. The more I hear about their plans for the new MBP, the more sick to my stomach I get. I think the MBA looks like ****, and it looks like they're queuing up to take cues from the MBA.

for the most part agreed ^^

the main thing I want is just a taaaaaad of a price drop, just a little one. 200 bucks off of the base model even if it is the same as the base model now (but with a better graphics card)? sounds good!

They should just put GTX 8800's in there because these MBP's are supposed to be apple's best graphical MacBooks. Of course they won't, but that's Apple for you.

Leaving aside the controversy over nvidia parts at the moment... Unless you're doing gaming on your laptop, and I'm going to go ahead and guess that isn't a big part of Apple's market share, will you actually stretch to needing anything that fancy.

so is the GPU going to be a Ati Mobility 3650?

No one knows. Hopefully that or a 3670.

Right, a great idea. Except that Apple's never used a high-end graphics card, that card is also affected with the same defect as the 8600 GT, and oh, yeah, it would burn a hole in your crotch if you put it on your lap, and fry inside the MBP's enclosure.

Any other bright ideas?

3850Mx2?

so when exactly do you think the new MBP will come out? I am not familiar with apples history but since the free ipod with purchase deal ends on the 15th...does that mean the new MBP will come out soon after?

I am leaving for college on the 25th so I am not sure if I will have the time.
