Here's the deal guys, regardless of what Apple releases, people (including me) will still go buy it. That is the brand loyalty that Apple has generated and is now abusing.

So tomorrow if they release a thinner MacBook Pro w/ slower processors, slower graphics and with other compromises ... people will still buy it. People here on this forum will vehemently justify and stand behind Apple's motives and sales strategy.

So we'll all play the waiting game and promptly give Apple our hard earned money for whatever they release.

Not me. I'll promptly go out and give Apple my hard earned money for one of the current models, and be happy to wait another two years for something better.

lets hope the 'product transition' focuses on power rather than aesthetics. My hopes are not high for today.

Mine either. This is really disappointing.

I feel like they're not really giving people who want more power much option anymore.

I agree. I would prefer better battery over most other improvements at the moment. When is that 10+ hour battery due??

Everything in laptops improves drastically all the time (or at least improves), except batteries. Why is this?

I am still waiting for those fuel-cell-batteries, that seem to be announced about once a year, but never actually hit the market! (I heard of them the first time back in 1999)

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering how reliable the september update is, since I'm going to sell my current MBP (2.2) and will have to subsist on occasionaly using one of my family's computers for the next month. I'm planning to wait til mid september but if it isn't sure there'll be an update then I could buy one of the latest gen MBPs instead. I will start college again on september 22, would an update before that date be plausible

We should be just as sure of a September Mac update as the regular September iPod update. But when in September is still in the air.

Especially the thickness. Especially the thickness. They will stand by ".85 inches thin!!1!1!!" all the way to the end.

Same here. Or at least let the 17" model focus on power.

I feel like they're not really giving people who want more power much option anymore.
That's what we want. An option for power. Those who want thinness and light weight but still reasonable power can get the 15". Those who want more power in expense of thickness and weight can get the 17". But I think Apple would differentiate between the 15" and 17" by reducing the specs of the 15" rather than upping the specs of the 17".

It's a "netbook" with a 7 inch screen and no power. It's designed for surfing the Internet. Nothing more.
And apparently some people seem to think Apple can stick Mac OS X on a device like that.

I don't think they should do that.

15" is about perfect for me (I think 16" might actually be the sweet spot), and I don't want a 17" laptop, but I DO want a good amount of power if I'm going to pay $2,000 for a laptop that's gonna serve me for 3-5 years.

I see, thanks for the info! I guess it would be foolish not to wait for the next update than.

As for performance vs thickness: I really hope they're not gonna make it any thinner. The MB(P) is already very thin, making it thinner would mean less powerful elements inside. I mean, we're buying the pro for a reason.
I hope the design won't change too much as well, I like the current design although some new design features wouldn't bother me.
The main thing I'm curious about is what the new GPU will be!

edit:
Oh, and I do hope there won't be too much difference between the 15/17 inch models, some people prefer the 15 inch (17 is too big imo) and also get the power they've paid for.

I think it will have a black keyboard, large trackpad, and more rounded edges, somewhat like the MacBook Air.

Don't expect more than midrange.

That's what I want. A 17" with an even greater increase in power. So the 15" stays where it is now and the 17" gets a high-end CPU and GPU.

This is just my 2 cents but I definitely think they 15" and 17" models should be nearly identical in available specs (like they are now), save for maybe a difference in available screen resolution.

The way I see it, and I think this is what Apple intends, the "macbook pro" is one product that has several available customizations, one of which is screen size. There's no reason to imply that the 17 model is supposed to be a more professional machine when many professionals demand smaller and more portable tools. A good example is in the Sony laptop line, their 13" sz (now "z") series laptop is priced and spec'ed way above most of the bigger-screen ones (idk the exact prices off-hand but i think the 13" one is like $1800 and the 15" one is around $900). Bigger != Better when it comes to laptops.

My guess is that Apple will try to differentiate the MB and MBP lines by a wider margin, and keep all the MBPs pretty close together.

The smart thing for Apple to do would be to take some of the height off the display, then they could add a couple of mm to the bottom case and still keep it an inch thick, all the while bumping up the specs with the added space.

I think the technical phrase for such a transformation is "beaten with the ugly stick"

Ugh. The MacBook Air is so ****ing ugly.

Doesn't this kind of contradict your own words about not expecting more than a mid range GPU..... and apple's entire history?

As for a high-end CPU, the best they could do is 2.8 GHz, which is still a very meh improvement over 2.4. I think it's obnoxious that you have to buy a larger screen (thus paying considerably more, and not necessarily getting what you want) for more power.

The current gen macbook pro's recently went down in price on the refurb site...
could be due to an update coming...
they did that w/ the newest imac update...
they lowered the prices on the refurb site...
and like a month later
BAM
new iMacs...

i really would buy that machine...
the thing is...
is that stupid video card.

Is anyone aware of the new MBP pricing and what are the REAL list of changes besides CPU (Blu-Ray, more USB ports, etc... )

Apple's products tend to get more powerful
and at lower prices

so i highly doubt they will go up in price
but i highly doubt they will go down in price

and list of changes

prolly case redesign
keyboard redesign
more allowed RAM (DDR3)
more l2 cache (someone correct me if im wrong or list the cpu speeds and they're l2 cache or if it has l3 cache or w/e it is)
and idk wut else

NOTE:
all just rumors

So probably the price will be around $2,000k - $2,500k?

I also hope they fix the noise when inserting/ejecting CDs... It's annoying, and everybody looks at me when I insert or eject a CD :D:D:D:D

The price will stay the same. We know nothing about new features. That sound is the sound of the drive physically moving. Pretty much nothing can be done about it. Stop swapping disks in the library.

Haha, I hear ya. Though I musy say it runs very smooth after the disc is inserted. The noise makes it sound like the drive could die any moment. I noticed I've been using my optical drive a lot less because of that :D

Pa-lease people!

Enough of this pointless ranting on asking when it will come out! Apple is just like any other company in that they clear out old stock before bringing in the new. The free iPod with Mac purchase for college students promo ends September 15th (a monday). It is most likely that they will release the new MacBooks and iPods on the 16th (tuesday) or the tuesday after. So chill people!

I have a question: do you think the new MBP will have a BlueRay player ? ;)

No, I'm just kidding. I also think that we speculated all the possible speculation and that now we just have to wait in silence, holding each other hands
