Apple used to wait for deals like back to school to end... but now they are teamed with intel. To keep up with their competitors they have to refresh when the others refresh. I'm expecting (and holding out for) an update in late Julyish/Early August.

I go to school August 16th and damn I want one before I go. Although I would have no problem with the current. It's just nice to have the latest and greatest.

Santa Rosa MBP refresh with LED screen was updated during 2007 back to school promotion on June 5th, 2007. Montevina update will not only include the small speed bump on the processor front, also the following updates:

* Updated video card
* DDR3 memory up to 16GB memory; since only 4GB SODIMM in production, 8GB maybe the max for MBP.
* Updated chipset (PM45/GM45)
* Updated south bridge (ICH9M)

I think this is worth waiting for. I don't care about a redesign, just a good spec increase. I just wish there was at least a whisper about a July/Aug update.

I think in the meantime I'll get a Mac Mini...

im with you on that. but if the new macbooks will need an event then sadly it will only be on macworld 09

Do you want me to buy a +$1200 iMac until they update the MacBook Pro? Dude, i'm not made of money. The Mini will last me until i get it. I don't own a mac and have a 4.5 year old PC...

yeah but your ok with $600+? :D

i just dont think its worth it..

1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
80GB hard drive - my ipod has 80gb lol

:p

I was going to buy a 17 inch this week. In fact, my Aunt and I went to Woodfield in Chicago to look, she insisted, but i wanted the hi - res screen which they don't sell in stores. Instead of dropping $3,500 on a laptop, i decided to get a new car :D. Now, i plan on buying the new MBP when it gets an update.

I currently have no mac, but a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. I love the thing, but 2 weeks ago my video card fried, and now this is what i have to look at:
http://i28.tinypic.com/14ma0ra.jpg

Using that from using 1920 x 1200 everyday... sucks.

But after the day is done, i think i made the right decision. I'm eagerly waiting the new MBP's.

Yeah, i know its a rip off. I just don't want to use this PC anymore... I don't even have an iPod! I'm going crazy!

there are whispers of an update. It was all everyone was talking about before WWDC now apparently people seem to think apple will really sit back and not release the latest hardware when it becomes available.

Makes no sense to me, especially when the competition is going to be flaunting the centrino 2 brand.

I just want to see at least a front page rumor of sommmmething to keep me going.

I'm not too familiar with Intel's policies but I heard that they push Apple to switch to their current processor's ASAP after release?

I am also EAGERLY waiting for an update. Would love to see a GPU update for my gaming needs.

I think the apple back to school promo is more to get rid of current gen ipods then current gen computers. So there is still a possibility of a new Pro before the summer ends. But end of July/Beg of August is the longest I'll wait because I want to get mine all prepped before college.

lol that sucks. you joined in 2005 and still havent made the switch?! what you been doing lurking around for so long?! hehe jokes - well i just switched (iMac) and i love it so far and planning my next mac purchase (1 of the 3 macbooks...see what gets updated)

I'm also going to switch to mac,
I can wait a couple more months, I don't need it that badly atm,
but I sure do wanna switch to a mac
but I was just wondering, when they release the new mbp in the states,
is there any delay on the release of those mpbs in europe?

Let the FUN (and SUICIDES) begin ...

Normally, all the online Apple stores around the world go down one by one and appear again in updated form some hours later. During this wait the forums here go over the top and mad with second by second comments along the lines of:

  • "Austraila's down!"
  • "Japan's down!"
  • "OMG! OMG! UK store is down as well!!!"
  • "I've been waiting all my life for this moment, I love you Steve!"

and

"They better have a 13" MBP this time otherwise I'm gonna hang myself using the power cord from my 12" PowerBook. Argh. I'm serious THIS time dudes!"

and

"If there's not an Octo-Core processor and Tri SLI graphics I'm gonna be ordering a POS Dell. F*** you Apple! See what you made me do?!"

One things for sure, when the update's complete the following things will happen:

  • Some people will already have pre-ordered and proclaim Steve Jobs a God
  • The above people will then compain vehemently about the 3 week delay
  • Waiting for "Montevina to Ship" threads will appear
  • Some will be asking for immediate performance benchmarks (despite no one having the new model yet)
  • Many will inevitably be disappointed and you'll see loads more "Waiting for Nehalem" and "So, when's the next 'REAL' MBP update?" threads appear
  • Suicide rates will increase ever so slightly worldwide

Yep, same thing happens each time. Still can't wait to get the beer out and watch it all unfold in realtime though ... :D

great post. :D

you forgot to mention that immediately after the release people will complain about the GPU.

Evidence for no new MBP case with Montevina update?

After taking a really long time, Incase finally released a MBP version of their hardshell case. Usually, the most loyal Apple Accessory companies (like Incase) get an early mold/model to fit their products to. So, assuming that Montevina will come out in July/September, why would Incase release it NOW...

And if you say that it isn't difficult at all to make a new version of case, how come it took them so long so that they are finally coming out with it? Because this is a form-fitting case that needs to snap on and off easily, it requires a lot more fine-tuning than most cases. So, I really think they wouldn't have put in the energy to make this one, if it wasn't going to last them at least 6 months...

Of course this is all speculative... I'm curious to hear what you guys think... am I on to something?

:D

Quite frankly, the reason I won't be updating as of yet because I feel that the impending MacBook Pro update will just be a "bump." WWDC is the mainstage for the Pro equipment, and I feel that is when we will see new Apple Cinema Displays and a REAL "NEW" MacBook Pro.

The Penryn update is actually considered a "Santa Rosa Refresh." It still possesses the same mobile Intel 965 chipset and wireless wi-fi link. Montevina will have sure-fire HD support (HD/DVD & Blu-ray), will be 40% smaller than Penryn, brand new Cantiga chipset, and possible to have Wi-Max. Intel admitted that when Montevina is released, that is when we will see smaller and lighter laptops. Best of all, it's going to be released MID-2008, and what rolls around that time.... thats right. WWD

So let the true MacBook Pro update...wait.... REPLACEMENT.. wait begin! :D

/raise hand for official wait

When is this update happening? Is it in one month or something? If not, Im going to buy mine now and order it in Hong Kong.

What's new about the update? New design, lighter laptop, ???

I hate to break it to you guys, but the day the Pentium I came out, my best friends father, one of the lead engineers for Intel, brought home a Pentium III chip based computer. They already have, at the very least, 2 generations of chips designed. Much of the timing of release date isn't due to how quickly technology can be discovered and progressed, but how often manufactures think that people will buy new computers based on a new chip.

I know for a fact that the next generation of chips is already in a prototype stage because I've seen one before. Suck it up and just buy now. Just because something new comes out doesn't change the specs of what you have or what its capable of doing.

for all the current mps owners.. omg what are you talking about?? Incase just came out with the Slider case for the iphone and not for the 3g!

Wouldn't it be awesome if AMD release a Mobility HD 4850, and that it makes its way into a MBP in the near future?
If not, I'm thinking Apple will lean towards a HD 3600 due to the lower thermals, as opposed to a 9600.
