I've been waiting for a MacBook Pro since last summer and even before. For me it's the redesign - just can't bring myself to buy a five year old case, no matter how powerful it may be.
That's a silly statement, why do you care how old the case design is? It's a very nice design, I'm glad they've stuck with it. My only complaint is the labor involved with swapping the hard drive, that should be a user-swappable part just like the memory.
Current Macbook Pro design is a classic - it's like the Porsche 911 of laptop design.

How Ive is going to better it without losing it's appeal is truly going to be a test of his design genius...
Bravo, very well said. It is a timeless design indeed. I do hope the "redesign" keeps this same look and feel but with the addition of a user-swappable HDD.

How is that silly? Think resale value. If they keep the next design for 5 years or so, 3 years from now it will have much higher resale value than a penryn+SR macbook pro of similar specs. Sure, I love the way it looks now, but there's little chance they will dramatically change it in a bad way.

User swappable hard drive is a must in my opinion as well.

My call on from now to MW2009SF...

3rd & 4th Q 2008 for school and X-mas season, we will see...

Refresh of MB- Aluminum,etc... ( the closest item to a full blown 13 inch MBP)
Speed Bump of MBP
Speed bump of Mac Mini

MW2009SF we will see...

- Total Refresh of the MBP
- Updating of the MBA
- entry notebook/tablet to combat the EEEpc...
- Any Snow Leopard Updates
- Any iphone G3 updates

These are my guesses and I am sticking to them! :D

These threads make me laugh.

"Now I have to wait even longer"

"no, you need to wait out the beta release, wait longer"

"screw it, i'll just get a pc"

IMO, the current penryn is stable, sexy, powerful, available, and not in it's beta stages.

I went through the same thoughts in May.

I could have still been waiting to buy. However I bought, and have an enormous grin on my face.

I'm sure people have heard this before (enter sarcasm) but if you try and wait for the latest, you'll always b waiting. Moore's law alone dictates that you're pretty much guaranteed to buy an outdated machine.

Bottom line. The current entry level Penryn is leaps and bound beyond what 99% of those asking if they should wait , require in a laptop.

Just my 2c

Pretty realistic sounding predictions. I'd keep them, only with a few minor changes:

- I'm still unsure about the MacBook going Aluminum. I know it has been rumored for a while, but I think it makes the Apple notebook lines too similar to one another and confusing for the consumer. To successfully pull it off, I think Apple would need to combine the MacBook/MacBook Pro lines and just make a 13.3'' version which may or may not have varying hardware. Combining the lines would alter their marketing scheme since it would take away from the incredibly popular consumer-geared models. I think Apple would have difficulty getting people to understand why such similarly styled computers have such great price differences if the product lines weren't altered...

- I wouldn't be so sure of the MBP refresh at MWSF if it would happen in the fall. It's too soon for an update since it would only be a couple months since the previous Montevina update. If a redesign is in the works, there's no reason that Apple can't have a media event (or not even have an event) and just release it. The annual Apple conferences don't have to be the place to release them.

- Tablets have been rumored for years, I'm wonder if they will ever be released :p

I personally have no problem with the MP staying with plastic cases, but I am justifying the many Aluminum MB case rumors with a prediction. My personal belief is there is next to no difference, sans screen size and graphic card between the Black MB and a baseline MBP in specs. :apple: may as well make a full blown Aluminum 13 inch MPB, and slot is above the MBA and below the baseline 15inch MBP. That would take care of the nation of 12PBG4 owners, which I am one, who are clamoring for an update. the MBA does not do it for me. I can never see myself paying that much $$ for so little comparable performance. In my opinion, an aluminum MB brings us closer to a true 13 inch MBP spec and that is a good thing!:D

:apple: is clearly stretching the life of the current MBP case. With the focus on the iphoneG3 and the consumer MB, I get the feeling that the MBP will not recieve attention before 2009.

Why do you believe that Apple needs to "combat" the EEEpc? The EEE is an ultra-low cost notebook; that's a segment that Apple isn't involved in. Sales of EEE are in no way affecting sales of Macbook.

You don't remember the G4 -> intel transition then do you? ;) Powerbook G4 was refreshed in October 2005 with high-res screen, dual-layer DVD, and Video card memory boost. Just 3 months later, in January of 2006 is when the intel MBP was released. I remember that event well as I'm typing this on one of those very very last refreshed G4 PB's. ;)

true, however...

"Why do you believe that Apple needs to "combat" the EEEpc? The EEE is an ultra-low cost notebook; that's a segment that Apple isn't involved in. Sales of EEE are in no way affecting sales of Macbook."

I agree with you. The MB is not a competitor for the Asus EEpc as it is not a Sub-notebook. :apple: does not HAVE a competitor in that space. The MBA's price point will not allow it to compete in this space.
The issue with Apple is that :apple: hardware has traditionally been more expensive than pc hardware. This culture clearly works against :apple: producing an Asus EEpc style sub notebook to compete at the $500-$700price point. The issue, however, is that the notebook industry has strongly trended toward $500-$700 sub-notebooks. Asus EEpc sold over 1 million of these models in a bit over a year's time. To assume that :apple: will just seed this territory to others is not good business. That is why I believe that :apple: is pushing to have the iphone/ipod touch and a potential tablet/newton style unit for this price point using a version of the Leopard OS.
:apple:

I am waiting for Montevina update as well, but not for a platform update and rather for some other possible updates there might be. Like with Penryn update there was a multi-touch trackpad introduced which I personally think is more powerful feature than just some minor speed bump in processing power. Show me some other laptop computers which have a feature like this (except MBA off course). MBP is a very attractive machine not because it is powerful, but because it has some features other machines do not have e.g. almost perfect case design, backlit keyboard, LED lit display, MagSafe power adapter, accelerometers inside, ambient light sensors, etc.

Some new features I would like to see in upcoming MBP:
• Design allowing easy HDD/SSD replacement. That is really a pain in ass not to be able to replace your storage device without breaking your dream machine apart and loosing any warranties you have
• SDHC card reader. I think DVD burner is an outdated peace of hardware which should go out of internal component list as soon as possible. It takes too much internal MBP space, it is loud, slow, it consumes too much power, and finally it is mechanical device. I do not know how often you use your SuperDrives, but I use mine only when I need to do some maintenance work which happens too rare to carry it everyday. So why not to use external SuperDrive and let other powerful and new features be integrated instead. Talking about SD/SDHC cards, they are everywhere and they are used more often when any other storage media around, so why it is still not in our dream machines? I use SD in my digital camera, HD camcorder, PDA phone, and as a replacement for USB drive. I move photos and movies almost every day.

Regarding GPU I think the situation is clearer than ever after the release of Snow Leopard specifications. The future operating system will utilize parallel-programming technology which will show miracles if used with multi-core hardware such as multi-core CPUs and multi-core GPUs. So my guess would be that the upcoming GPU in MBP will definitely come from Nvidia, because they have CUDA platform and even the current Nvidia GeForce 8600M supports this technology (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-9962117-37.html).

The MBP as a pro machine definitely needs to keep an internal DVD drive for the forseeable future.I am in the group that uses my DVD drive regularly for burning, importing, and gaming. No internal DVD drive is a MAJOR drawback and a dealbreaker. No internal DVD drive is often sited as one of the major reasons not to even try a MBA.:apple:

No need to remove the Superdrive for that - the MacBook Pro's ExpressCard port can accommodate a memory card reader. Of all the things to remove the SuperDrive for, an SD reader is certainly not one of them.

To me, MBA only seems unsuitable (as a sole machine that is, personally I feel it'd brilliantly complement a desktop) due to its more limited power and functionality offers (glossy screen, fixed battery and RAM, no user HD access, ports). In this age of memory sticks and online storage, I can't think of a time I've needed an optical drive on the move.

I'm with this guy. Keep the superdrive or I won't buy! its that important to me! I hate external stuff! I'd rather have it a 1/10'' thicker and be ready for anything! And DVDs are not out of date. However adding blu-ray would be a smart move on apple's part

I believe that Blu Ray Drives will be made available with Apple support as the price continues to drop.

So I have an older friend who thinks they'll be out in July, but I've pretty much accepted the idea of getting a current one in july, because I doubt it.

I'm wondering if because they have the education deal with the free iPod lasting from June until September they wouldn't release a new MBP? Any history on a MBP refresh coming out during these dates?

I guess they could still do it as it's not just students who buy the Macs of course. It's just that having the MBP update during the education deal would be so, so sweet for me!

I like the small speed bump, but I'm in it for any new features they are going to put into the MBP. I agree with most of the posters on this thread, no casing update until Nehalem comes out (I hope I'm wrong though!)

I hope you're wrong as well. ;)

Damn... I can't decide when to buy.

Yep, it also doesn't help that there just haven't been any solid rumours circulating regarding the MBP for some months now. Even a small rumour would be something but nothing. Nothing at all.

All we have is the July date for the delayed Montevina release and that literally is ALL we have when it comes to something, maybe related, to the MBP - some ACD rumours wouldn't go amiss either I tell ya! :D

Maybe I'll do you all a favour and buy a pro this week. That will pretty much guarantee something gets announced next week :p

Any history on a MBP refresh coming out during these dates?
Santa Rosa MBP refresh with LED screen was updated during 2007 back to school promotion on June 5th, 2007. Montevina update will not only include the small speed bump on the processor front, also the following updates:

* Updated video card
* DDR3 memory up to 16GB memory; since only 4GB SODIMM in production, 8GB maybe the max for MBP.
* Updated chipset (PM45/GM45)
* Updated south bridge (ICH9M)

So am I better off just waiting to buy my Macbook Pro later in the summer? like late July or something?

What a refreshing post! Reasonable expectations and I too do not feel Apple waits for Back to School to end.
