Live Coverage of Apple's 'Come See What 2011 Will Be the Year Of' Event

I want to order it now and avoid the zoo that will be March 11 at the retail stores. :(

I'm guessing that Apple's trying to create a zoo-like scene at the stores next weekend. Sales start at 5:00pm local time, and there are no online pre-orders. Those who "need" one on day one will need to wait in line, like they did for the first iPhone.

OTOH, it gives me (and people like me) 9 more days to talk myself out of ordering one.

And with a battery that lasts about 3 hours. But that's irrelevant since the NGP will have to survive with essentially no component upgrades for at least 3 years. There will be another new iPad in a year, and then another a year after that, and so on.

And the NGP isn't coming out until Holiday 2011, so comparing it to the iPad 2 is pointless. You have to wait for the iPad 3 to make any technology comparisons. That said, I have no idea how Apple plans to implement Retina, a quadcore A6, and keep anything close to a 10 hour battery on the iPad 3.

Get your facts straight, the battery is quoted to last 4-5 hours, the same battery life as the current PSP Go and 3000. That coupled with the fact it's an OLED display.

By the way, do you know how large the IPads battery is? Well, it's huge, probably the length of the NGP. So for it's size 5 hours is a good standard.

To me Apple being able to make only 2 HW improvements should be a concern to Apple long term. Other makers (copycat or not) are trying to get into the same market and some of the makers produce the exact same parts Apple needs also. Obviously the components makers can NOT intentionally withhold parts from Apple, BUT they can still use the components in the products THEY make and sell.

There are a possible 5 HW improvements in that list. Don't kid yourself.

Secondly, if people don't want to buy it...then don't! There are other products out there. It's like people are complaining about it, and then begrudgingly buying the damn thing. Grow up and go elsewhere, it's a free market.

I agree with Jobs, it's not just about tech. It's everything else too. If ALL you care about are headlining tech specs then you're not in the market for an iPad.

As I didn't buy iPad 1, this looks like it's going to be my first iPad.

MobileME was pulled from resellers as a business/financial decision. When you buy it straight from Apple then Apple gets the full $99. They probably sold the boxes to resellers for about $69.

You can't even buy it straight from Apple now, as far as I can tell.

No pre-order = mayhem at the Apple Stores on March 11th. God bless you all. I learned my lesson last summer.

For all we know, they will set it up so that you have to reserve to get one any time in the first week. There's still a week and a half to release that info. Or even to start online orders.

Judging from past experience, I'd say specs aside the Apple product will still outperform the Xoom in day to day use. Don't get me wrong and I"m sorry if I come off like a fan boy. We have both platforms in my home and I've yet to have major trouble with iOS. Android however is another story entirely. So my point is you can have all the specs and raw power in the world but if it doesn't integrate in an elegant, easy to use way the public will not buy it. Tinkerers only make up a very small percentage of the market. Most people just want to open a box and zoom off in to the sunset. They just don't have the no-how nor do they have the need for so much raw power with when they'll have to be forced to find their own tires to keep that power on the ground.

Exactly: It's not what you do, it's how you do it. Most tech companies don't get this.

Good Lord ~ all of that for the same $499 entry price? Wow ...

Kudos Apple.

(was hoping for some MobileMe news, though :p )

This must be coming from someone who doesnt have a xoom? The Google Experience tablet is FAAAAR more intergrated than the Ipad and ios.

Ipad had its bugs, and still has them. Xoom has its bugs too, and those will be worked out over time... as was the iPads.

The price point of the hardware for one. The performance boost is more than enough that coupled with the library availability it will steer many who were on the fence to forget about the xoom. I would bet that by the end of the year sale of the new ipad will be at least 3x-4x that of the xoom.

A XOOM with 1ghz Tegra 2, 1gb of ram, 32gb + microsdhc... 2 cameras..HDMI out, LTE +3g is only $70 more than the equivalent iPad 1 and 2.

You were saying?

I guess since Mac share is low this iMovie, PhotoBooth and GarageBand stuff is all new to 90%+ of America.

Sorry but that mayhem I will not be part of.
I much rather wait few days and get it at home. Just hate that zoo when products are launch. Not worth it IMO.

Why on earth are people arguing about the Sony NGP? :S

Tech junkies...make yourselves useful and make your own tablet using the latest tech available. If that's not good enough, invent your own tech. Don't be a spectator and armchair critic. Do something about it.

That one actually made me laugh out loud. Good job!

No doubt, the exact things that were speculated on these forums and nothing more. I was laughing thru the presentation thinking about how they'd spin thess updates as "magical" and "revolutionary" as well.

was the GPS unit on ipad1 assisted like the ipad2? so what would happen if I bought one without the phone service? would I still be able to use the GPS unit?

Yes. Assisted GPS just means that it uses cellular signal in addition to GPS signal in order to find a lock more quickly. If there is no signal, it will revert to the standard GPS and just take a little longer.

I guess they want everyone to line up at Apple stores the night before instead of preordering. To be honest though, I find it really fun to line up at the Apple Store.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. I guess I'll be ordering mine and getting it the next week. I don't stand in line to give people money.

"So, GarageBand for iPad. This is no toy. You can use this for real work. I cannot tell you how many hours teenagers are going to spend making music with this."

lol

No Toy?

Real Work

Teenagers?

Real Work and teenagers? :S

Real work for teenagers.....LOL. Someone should inform my daughter as to what "real work" means. All kidding aside I'm rather excited about garage band. If it works as advertised and I can import files back to my mac at home it'll be a great tool when I'm on the road. Still I'll need to kick the tires before I get to excited.

kind of disappointed with this event. all they did to the ipad was give us a larger ipod touch 4g, literally. all the same specs, minus the retina display. they showed a few things about 4.3 and then a few new apps.

then that was it.

i should stay away from these rumor sites, they got my hopes all up for this kinda thing. so are we just going to hear about iOS 5 in june??

when can we actually preorder? i wish they would've been more specific about that, they just said they're available on march 11. well i don't want to spend my friday in line all day. goddamnit.

No pre-order, doesn't sound promising. Why doesn't Apple want to guarantee my money in their pocket? Maybe because they can't guarantee a product in my hands on March 11th. I wouldn't be surprised if all these rumors of a delay came true.

Very true. Maybe because they need a hype pick-me-up since no long lines were seen for the Verizon iPhone.

And as for not having pre-orders directly available after the keynote, they just lost a lot of impulse buyers' money.

So this is APPLE'S summary of the iPad 2:

"So iPad 2 -- amazing product.

Faster, lighter, thinner.
Cameras and gyro.

iOS 4.3 and FaceTime.
iMovie and GaragrBand.
3G on AT&T and Verizon.
Same battery life.
Same prices.
Black and white.
Smart Covers"

Only the first 2 have anything to do with the iPad hardware that has actually changed. The biggest thing is faster, which is good, but not enough for a version 2 update. Maybe there WILL be an iPad 3 in 2011.

Tony

Forgot one. So that makes 3 on your list.

<<puts away credit card>>

great product, lots of tasty upgrades. I can't say I'm WOW'd to the point of needing to upgrade; I just don't feel compelled to get one. The camera and faster processor don't do it for me since I don't use my iPhone 4's facetime and dont' play a ton of games. Current iPad still works wonders.

I'll wait until the 3.
