I'd definitely switch if they'd enable FaceTime over 3G. Hotspot functionality is almost worth it… esp. if it includes unlimited data… (I know, jailbreak and you get both…)

Here's food for thought... On EVDO you can't EVER have FaceTime over 3G since it sets up the call as a voice call then converts it to data... you can run simultaneous and do the handoff on GSM\HSPA, but not EVDO. The only way they'd be able to make it happen would be to remove the "Facetime" during call button. No handoffs... see already people are taking the voice + data simultaneously for granted. And you won't be able to HOLD your phone call to listen to a voicemail because it won't download until you hang up... same with pic messages. See ATT not so bad now ehh? :) We forgot the dark ages of EDGE already.

Wouldn't be too surprised if ATT uses the you can make phone calls and data at the same time as their pro vs Verizon's tethering free. And to the guy that was asking about the JB for it... I assume there will be one eventually but unlocking will be an issue considering there is probably no sim card so you would actually have to call up Sprint and try to have them activate the phone to their network unlike the GSM carriers that you just have to activate a sim card and put it in after you unlock it. So possible just seems like quite a few more hoops to jump through.

Can't wait until this is over and MR stops making a new Verizon post for every step of this process.

But we want all the updates on what is happening now:
- how long are the lines in front of the Verizon store
- how will the phone behave on the network in the first weeks
- how will the phone behave on the network after four weeks
- did it cause any changes to the congestion of the AT&T network
- will Verizon get the iPhone5 in July
- ...

there are so many possible updates

IMO...its just foolish for anyone to buy this phone now, since the iphone 5 will be out later this summer.
Unless AT&T gets it before Verizon...We'll just have to wait I guess

Unless the Verizon iPhone has its own 1-year product cycle.

Edit: Which you already said in your post. So, yeah, cool. *begins whistling*

The most important part to me was the non-exclusive deal. Nothing stopping Apple from offering the CDMA iPhone to Sprint, Metro PCS, U.S. Cellular, etc. This could be the start of universal iphone coverage among U.S. carriers.

With Verizon your phone will still ring (or so I have read here). This is in contrast to AT&T's edge service where if you have a constant data connection (i.e. streaming) the phone will not ring.

Can it ring and continue data access until you answer? Or does the ringing itself bomb the data connection?

I wonder whether the Verizon data network will allow VoIP traffic so you can still take calls while tethered.

A very intelligent question.

I used to use Skype VoIP on a Verizon WinMo phone. This allowed me to surf and talk at the same time on EVDO. Incoming VoIP calls woke Skype up with a push notification. It was pretty neat.

However, in the past year Skype stopped supporting straight VoIP on mobile phones. I'm not sure exactly what they do now, but I'm pretty sure a real phone call has to initiate it. (Anyone have recent experience?)

Verizon has once again crippled a device.

Why would I pay more (given good coverage where I am at) for:

-No Concurrent Data/Voice (Verizon users....trust me...this is like power windows in a car...once you have it, you wonder how you lived without it)

-No Free Wifi

-No international coverage (this also results in less demand for selling your used iPhone)

-No Rollover Minutes

-Visual Voicemail will not update while you are on another call

Unless Verizon has monthly plans at half the price, forget it.

who cares if i took on the phone i talk on it not surf the web

no free wifi? who says u get free wifi anywhere there is wifi like any iphone

rollover minutes are a joke most people never use them so overrated

who cares about visual voicemail

Finally. Holy smokes, this was like passing a kidney stone. It's finally out.

And strangely, I can wait for the iphone 5 now. :)

Can it ring and continue data access until you answer? Or does the ringing itself bomb the data connection?

right now on my blackberry if your using data and phone rings u have the option to ignore the call or answer it but you can go back to use the data when your done it just stops at the point your at

What are the chances of that CDMA network upgrade going into effect post-launch at some point, that would allow simultaneous voice-and-data transmission? It was rumored pre-launch, and I'm now wondering if it's something that will be altered within Verizon's network in the future to be allowed.

Really, it does cripple the device, to a certain extent, and I'm sure both Apple and Verizon want it changed.

The mobile hotspot thing is awesome. I love it.

No voice and data at the same time = No sale!

I must say it's tempting to ditch AT&T and go over to Verizon, but I just realized that my wife and I do use voice/data simultaneously. Whenever she wants to email me a picture of something from her phone I have to walk her through it...on the phone.

I assume VZ will rectify this shortcoming as they expand their LTE and ditch CDMA. Until then I get to stay with AT&T.

Not bad, not good, just different.

Wow, that made the Beatles announcement look like big news. So Apple have decided to hand over the Rolls Royce of phones to a gimped network with no 3G and an inability to do simultaneous voice and data? And they needed a huge press conference to announce it?

Mifi Service is also Crippled by Verizon

So, when my Mifi Hotspot is on and I have a call coming in, my data connection drops. This is ridiculous.

who cares if i took on the phone i talk on it not surf the web

no free wifi? who says u get free wifi anywhere there is wifi like any iphone

who cares about visual voicemail

Those are all important features for me, so I care.

Used to want an iPhone, but I'm very happy with my Droid Incredible, esp. it's GPS.

Maybe I'll spring for one once LTE takes off, I'm not eligible for an upgrade until Dec 2011 anyways, so no biggie.

Some of us still have unlimited data plans. However I am on the fence about the mobile hotspot. With so many placing now having Wifi, jumping onto a wifi network is not that hard.

Easily cured with PDAnet though. I have no problem with Jailbreaking to get the features you actually need. Add to it. How long will it take to add that tweak for the mobile hotspot to the ATT software?
