theres no way the 5 will come to verizon in june just not possible, secondly what else can apple actually do to make the iPhone better? better camera? whoopie do, it already does HD video, cant get the screen much clearer then it is. Possible antenna relocation, thats a real big upgrade! NOT

How about dual core, more memory, optics changes on camera, barometer, to name a few?
Jeez... Apple can't win. Its either they don't rev frequently enough to match the Android du jour, or 'they're making me upgrade every year!'.

Verizon can't do voice and DATA at the same time. If you're doing voice and video, then you're treating voice and video as DATA, which can be done.

You can't call someone and check your emails without being able to do voice and data simultaneously.

It's amazing that some people can't recognize sarcasm

So, when my Mifi Hotspot is on and I have a call coming in, my data connection drops. This is ridiculous.

A "MiFi" is a standalone WiFi hotspot device, not a phone.

If you meant the hotspot app on the phone, then yes. However, having the free hotspot is better than not having one.

Wow, that made the Beatles announcement look like big news. So Apple have decided to hand over the Rolls Royce of phones to a gimped network with no 3G and an inability to do simultaneous voice and data? And they needed a huge press conference to announce it?

Funny, everyone using WinMo phones on ATT 3G, said the same thing about the iPhone's truly gimped and slow EDGE radio. It was not even able to take calls while using data. Yet millions of people bought it. The same will happen here.

Yup! :D So much for the folks who jumped up and down about a Verizon iPhone. This is totally lame. So you can't use any apps that require a data connection while you are on a call. READ GPS PEOPLE!!!! Pretty much all GPS apps now even the ones with maps stored locally need a data connection for traffic alerts. Huge limitation in my experience. I am always making calls from my car while I have the GPS guiding me. I am typing emails as I am talking or looking up something as I am talking. This sucks more than people think. So far the CDMA crowd has not complained because they didn't know any better. There was no device even closely comparable to the iPhone on Verizon. Now that they have the iPhone and appreciate its capabilities, they will realize how important it is to be able to have simultaneous voice and data. Also the AT&T HSPA network is WAY faster than Verizon. Just wait and see.

Lets wait for a bitching to start on how horrible the Verizon iPhone is and how horrible their data network is. This is going to be fun!! Can't wait:D

Verizon iPhone

I'm free from ATT, tomorrow (I originally said Finally).
After Verizons announcement......wow

No data while on a phone call - that's huge

Question, will ATT just charge me normally and await (hope) that I will sign a new contract? Should I wait till February to see what kind of plans ATT will respond with? Like possibly a cheaper tethering all inclusive unlimited data package like I have now on my 2G iPhone and iPad??

Just read that LTE is a GSM based technology. Verizon would be taking a step backwards if I sign up with them. Plus NO rollover?

So Verizon's hotspot is basically the same implementation as at&t's and every other carriers. It's in Settings. It's just called "Personal Hotspot"

Apparently the new phone is running iOS 4.2.5 does that mean Personal Hotspot is coming to all other devices in a future update?

A very intelligent question.

I used to use Skype VoIP on a Verizon WinMo phone. This allowed me to surf and talk at the same time on EVDO. Incoming VoIP calls woke Skype up with a push notification. It was pretty neat.

However, in the past year Skype stopped supporting straight VoIP on mobile phones. I'm not sure exactly what they do now, but I'm pretty sure a real phone call has to initiate it. (Anyone have recent experience?)

If Verizon does allow VoIP, then Google Voice is going to become a must-have when tethered.

I would wait if I were you. Wait till March and see the posts on this forum. Grass on the otherside is always green they say but right now it is starting to look brown already and we are not even on the other side yet. Was thinking of getting the Verizon iPhone for my gf since she is already on Verizon and her contract is up for renewal. But now I am thinking she is better off switching to AT&T. Will wait a couple of months and see what happens here.

Now I heard the Iphone pricing wasn't available... correct?
Theres gotta be a reason for that. They dont wanna rain down on their event, showing prices.

I'm thinking its not going to be on the same pricing plan as the other smartphones.

Mobile hotspot is pretty great. But data/voice and visual voicemail are too. If I didn't have an iPhone 4 already, this would be a tough call. Having an AT&T iPhone, there's nothing nearly compelling enough to make me switch. (though of course coverage is the real issue, and AT&T is actually quite good in Boston).

It will be touted as a huge iOS 5 feature. even though I've had it for two years already

I certainly hope so - I'd love to just use my iPhone to tether my iPad instead of a separate MiFi device :) (and yes, I know you can do that if you jailbreak, but I prefer to keep my iPhone au naturel)

The difference now is there is an alternative that can. But I agree, it won't stop most people from getting it on Verizon if they like the network.

I absolutely hope so. AT&T really should get onboard with this.

Does anyone think we're going to skip from 4.2.1 directly to 4.2.5?

While this announcement doesn't entice me because of the lack of data + voice, it is overall still very exciting for the iPhone platform in general. There will be a lot of flight from Android to iPhone now - they won't care about data + voice, because you don't miss what you never had.

And of course, Verizon iPhone users will eventually be rewarded, since the upgrade roadmap for both the handset and the network eventually includes data + voice - possibly by the very next iteration.

I also hope the competition gets AT&T users some better deals and FaceTime over 3G, etc.

Finally

Well it's about time. I'm really happy about this for many reasons.

1) As an Apple stock holder.
2) As an iPhone owner it's good that the traffic will now be spread over two networks (I'm expecting MANY people to leave AT&T).
3) The rumors can end and we can move on to something else.

The hotspot is a nice feature, but there's no way I would settle for no concurrent voice / data. I use my phone like that all day every day. It would be a huge lost for me. But I'm sure many (most??) people don't care about that - especially if your are already with VZN and don't currently have it.

I can't wait to see how many they ship in the first batch.

That's my thing. I've got great coverage where I live too and screaming fast 3G. Of course, having a hefty FAN discount and family that's on at&t (free calls) helps a lot too.

...So at this point for VZW customers to pre-order, all that we can do is sign up with our e-mails to be notify when it's time, correct?

Like I'm going to forget 2/03/11...

I like the way Tim Cook holds the line on not giving out too much proprietary information - propbably one of the reasons why he is so successful at aapl.

But I laugh at the vz guy mead in trying to sugar coat a major flaw - typical marketing response

Q: Simultaneous voice and data?
A: Mead: "It's consistent with other CDMA devices now",
