Well I'm currently eligible for an annual upgrade and it notes this in my account, yet when I check for the iPhone, it says I'm not eligible. I hope they're not playing this kind of game...

I'll bet they give it for free on their capped plans but will us unlimited guys out in the cold.

That would suck. You're probably right. I'd have to forfeit my unlimited to get it now so they would probably never offer it for free (as they should).

11:25AM Question from Ars Technica: what happens when you're on a call and need to use data?

Dan: Same as a CDMA device.

So... you don't.

No voice and data at the same time.

Is Verizon doing unlimited data AND tethering up to 5 devices? If so, I do hope AT&T answers accordingly. I'd love to keep my unlimited data plan, but tether to my wifi iPad once in a while...

Now let the speculation begin as to whether this announcement will have any impact on Apple releasing a new phone this year.

I mean, it doesn't make much sense to launch in February after a 4 year wait and then come out with a new phone 4 months later.

Why not? GSM/AT&T users get the new phones in June with Verizon following 6 months later.

Wifi hotspot? Excellent. I can drop the AT&T iPad 3G bills now.

I did not upgrade my iPhone to iPhone 4, iPad was better for my needs. So I'm not tied into AT&T.

The tethering is going to work just like it does on the Pre Plus.

Unlimited wireless data, included tethering, seriously AT&T needs to step up on this, this is pretty huge.

Inquiring minds wish to know..

Why the new antena design ? how does this affect the iphone 4's performance ?

if it is an upgrade that fixes some antenna issues why isnt there some sort of support for older iphone 4's ?

is this a new iphone 4 and all new roll outs well be like this ?

what about people who bought one and have the antenna issue ?

why isnt anyone commenting the new hardware ?

is the new antenna cmda only ?

will you be able to use a verizon iphone 4 with jb and unlock on another network ?

some of the questions that have popped into my mind :p

mobile hotspot is good if you have unlimited data, otherwise it'll rape your bandwidth.

also, no voice and data at the same time.

I heard its unlimited data up to 5gb cap though.
So in reality...its not Unlimited.

The only thing I'm jealous of is the included Mobile Hotspot. If I wasn't already an iPhone 4 owner, undoubtedly I would choose Verizon. That is a huge deal.
I hope AT&T decides to become more competitive.

I hope AT&T follow suite too, but no simultaneous voice & data somewhat kills the usefulness of tethering on Vz to me. Tethering is pretty useless if it means the phone won't ring while it's in use, or you can't talk to a co-worker while using whatever you've tethered to.

All of this hype for the iPhone and Verizon and it seems a bit watered down due to Verizon's network restrictions. Can't blame Apple for anything with this.

"They will make those sorts of tradeoffs." (regarding no data while on call)

I don't think so. There has been multiple and countless times when I'm on a call and used data at the same time, check email, check a website, check my back account..etc.. People will still go for the Verizon iPhone but they won't like it, they'll trade that off to not being in AT&T's network maybe, but others who don't know and experience the inability to use data while on call will be upset and disappointed.

Edit: Personally, it's not worth the trade off, waiting till iPhone 5 and hoping that it'll be on LTE.

VZW has different frequencies so you have to tweak the antenna a bit for those. same as if it would have been on sprint or T-Mo which has really high 3G frequencies

My Verizon Palm Pre Plus has the $30 unlimited data package and tethering for up to five devices, but tethering is NOT unlimited.

The 'unlimited data' is for the phone itself.. downloading apps, web browsing, etc.

The data for tethering is capped at 5gb a month, and is no additional charge.

I suspect the Verizon iPhone will be the same.

Such great news. We all win with this competition. AT&T is going to have to work to keep their tens of millions of iPhone subscribers. With the easy, iPod-sync backup and transportable phone numbers, there has never been an easier switch to make or phone to make it with.

Next iPhone purchase for me goes to the network with the best deals and bundle. Yeah, the carriers get to race to the bottom - awesome!

AT&T Execs reportedly place record order with the makers of Rolaids.

So will this allow an iPad to connect?

When using the Mobile Hotspot will I be able to use other applications and services on the device at the same time?
Yes, you will be able to use other applications including: email, web browsing, text messaging and more while connecting up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices at once. When the Mobile Hotspot is connected, any data usage on either the device itself or through any Wi-Fi enabled devices will be subtracted from your 3G Mobile Hotspot monthly 5GB data allowance, rather than from your unlimited data allowance associated with your email and web for smartphone feature.* You can monitor your usage by logging into My Verizon.

Can I use my existing email and web for smartphone plan to access this functionality?
No, the 3G Mobile Hotspot functionality is an additional optional feature that will have a $40 incremental cost with a 5GB data allowance with $0.05MB overage rate.
