Well, it's rumored that Apple purchased Siri in 2010 for north of 200M. While that's a far cry from 8B, one could say that Siri has failed miserably since Apple acquired the company nearly 7 years ago.

Sad though it is to say, I suspect Siri as a product would've been far more powerful than it is today had it not been purchased by Apple. Although, that power likely would've never been realized on an iOS device because Siri would be incredibly limited on iOS had Apple not purchased it -- just like Cortana is.

200M isn't even in the same ballpark as $8B, lol.

Last I checked, Siri still exists and Nokia mobile is all but gone.

Right before they move into the UFO building too. Well thank you Mr. Stringer for helping build the things I love. I wish you well:cool: (this message was approved by WB:p)

I can see all the negative comments that will be flooding in, it's not necessarily a bad thing that he's leaving he has been at Apple for a lot of years and people leave companies and jobs for all different reasons. But yea carry on with the "Apple is doomed" blah blah nonsense.

apples market share has happened because of how they have taken chances. Ok the trash can was a stinker for sure, but can't blame them or trying. problem is they never updated it or offered easy upgrade options for it that mattered - like even a new AMD GPU never mind nV. I think the guy just got tired of working on theme and variation that simply added newer chips and displays over creating a new products... like a mac pro

People do love the MBPs.....I'm very confused.

Tim Cook is Steve Ballmer? Uh no. Can you point me to where Cook made a $8B acquisition that failed miserably?

I think you and all other critics share the same mindset that Apple needs another "iPhone" to stay relevant when that's far from the truth.
Uh, not 8 billion, but I don't see Dre and Iovine doing much to improve things at Apple:

"As part of the acquisition, Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple. Apple is acquiring the two companies for a total of $3 billion, consisting of a purchase price of approximately $2.6 billion and approximately $400 million that will vest over time"

I think Cook has the same lack off vision that Balmer had. Apple has been coasting since Steve passed.

Ever since Steve left Apple has been on life support. He was the linchpin that made it work. Apple needs to find a creative genius to replace Cook. Cook knows numbers and little else.

I'm not in a position to make that decision.

I don't think any of these people are bad people. I think that any company would be well off having Tim Cook as a COO, supply line guy. However, he doesn't seem to be capable of truly leading.

I also think that Ive can come up with decent design, if there's someone to clearly tell him "no" or to set expectations for him.

Schiller in charge of the computers seems very out of touch. Even after the MacBook Pro announcement and the backlash it did receive, he was unable to understand at all why there was doubt about the machine. Despite many well thought out reviews and posts around the internet pointing out the shortcomings, he still was completely baffled that everyone didn't love the device like he did.

I could go on :p

these people are not bad people to work. But as leadership without a "jobs' like personality, they're not in control and seem to just be coasting.

Now, I don't personally have a name that could just drop in to CEO role and do what jobs' did. These people are few and far between.

But the way I'm seeing Apple right now, is very similar to Microsoft under Balmer. A lot of momentum and great products to ride on. But most things released are not up to the previous lustre and none of it is truly forward thinking. it took over a decade before Balmer was replaced with a "Visionary". Balmer's Microsoft was also extremely profitable and financially succesful, But I don't think anyone, even Microsoft Fanboys are going to tell you that Balmer's Microsoft was a pinnacle of their success.
Awesome and precise synopsis. It's amazing how history repeats itself over and over again. I feel it's like it's 1994 Apple and 2004 Microsoft all over again.

you mean.... like Beats?

20 years. wow. That's a shame to lose such an experienced designer. I'm suprised the other designer left Apple for GoPro.

It shouldn't be surprising - when you've hit your peak and you want more interesting challenges then it is a situation where even if the employer offered you more money the job satisfaction at that point is a lot higher than say whether one was younger and more money focused at the beginning of ones career.

Do you really think Steve did such a bad job picking his executive team?

He picks Tim to replace him, and while you might argue that was a one-off mistake,

No it wasn't a one-off because he also picked John Sculley -- who eventually led the cabal to boot Jobs from Apple. Of course history tells us we all benefited from that but it was a hell of a time for Apple those san-Jobs years and Jobs came back just in the nick of time. Just.

Jobs was genius but not all of his ideas were and not all of his staffing picks either. No human is perfect. Not one of us.
So yes, Jobs often picked people he thought would be good decisions-makers and leaders and was proven wrong.

Stringer: "Look at what I have created...."

Cook: "what does it cost?"

Stringer: "... see ya later"

Yes, I think it's quite possible that Tim Cook actually thinks good design is created by magic.

Bixby is Siri 2.0.

Apple bought the company that invented Siri, than promptly took it over and dictated to the inventors what they believed it should be. So much that a large group of the original developers of Siri abandoned apple, restarted their own company, and that ended up being bought by Samsung to become Bixby.

probably one of the reasons why Siri's evolution came to a halt

Perhaps he was tired of having to do his work on a 2013 Mac Pro, and went to work for a company which provides its employees with more up-to-date tools! ;)

While that's cute, tell me what a 2017 Mac Pro would have over a 2013 Mac Pro? Really, stop and think about that for a moment. The current Mac Pro is already a serious powerhouse, hence why Apple has gotten away with not updating it in so long. People looking to _buy_ one have a different reason — buying a 3-year-old computer at full price is a bit of a stretch. I agree with that.

Not much.

Why is it so hard to grasp this year it will be 4 years?

You just said it's in the future.

$3B vs $8B

Beats is highly profitable. Where's Nokia?

Try again.
