OCD since '83. :p

I am with you. I TOTALLY GET IT. I have my 3G, and it's pristine. Always had a slider/ protector. I like my stuff to be NICE.

I would have GAGGED watching someone else disrespect my brand new 3GS like that. And I might have even said, "Hey--that's a brand new phone, please don't drag it across the countertop."

I agree with you completely. When the AT&T employee tore off the plastic covering of my 3G S and slid in on the table, bare, during activation, I cringed. That's just the way I am. For an older, "broken in" product, I don't mind, but a brand new iPhone? No.

I asked the apple guy not to remove the plastic to activate it and he said " no problem. I never do ." you are the customer. If you don't ask they don't know.

Whoa, I didn't know all the anal ppl come out when the new iPhone is released.
This thing deserves a poll of some sort. Like "was this acceptable of the Apple Store employee?"
Seriously who cares about it being pristine? It being in mint condition will not increase it's resale price. As long as it's in good condition, it'll sell for the same amount.
And if you have it in the case all the time...you never even see the scratches.
It still works fine, it hasn't affected the durability of the phone, so I don't see the problem.

I used to sell Helio's at an FYE. Whenever I'd get one out to activate it I was really careful with it and had a special cloth to leave it on when I put it on the counter. That's just discourtious.

I MADE SURE that the ATT employee didn't let that phone hit the counter. I even made him keep the plastic on the phone.

Yeah but until then, I'd like to keep it nice. Plus it will hold more value if it's mint.

Now, maybe I'm obsessing, but should I have to live with scratches I didn't cause myself? If I had scratched it I wouldn't care.

Am I overreacting? Here's a pic:

You are 110% overreacting. No one is going to buy or not buy the phone because of two hairline scratches that you won't even see with the case on, even if the case is clear. Believe me. If the rest of the phone is in perfect condition, it will not hinder the value. you are 100000000 percent overreacting. But I understand your concern.

It's really not about the value, it's just about the genius bar people being stupid.

I once picked up a macbook pro from repairs, the guy brought it out to me, put it on the table, and then slid it over to put down the paperwork. I could hear something scratching pretty bad, and after I was done with the paperwork I flipped the computer over and noticed that by sliding it he had scratched the entire bottom. He attempted to blame it on me, but I told him "I'm selling this on eBay next week. I didn't give it to you guys like that. You are going to fix it."
They had to order the part, but it was fixed. You have to be assertive.

I know how you feel,

I took my Mother in last saturday to get her a 3G and to order my 3G S (Which I am loving :)) and the guy ripped the plastic off and was getting fingerprints all over it throwing across the table, you name it he did it.

When I went to get my 3G S, I almost left because I got the same guy. I requested for him to leave on the plastic and he looked at me like I was a retard. He did it though and immediately after I took it out of the plastic my self, I put on a screen saver and put it in a nice cushy case.

What happened to you was just crazy. The "Genius" of all people should have know that the people who buy :apple: products like to keep their products in pristine condition. If I was you, I would have requested to try out another phone to see if it had the same problem and just kept the new one;).

Wow I think this was my longest MacRumors post yet :p

when i got my iphone at att the chubby dude with the coke nails who was activating my phone ripped the hell off the plastic and slid it across the table
i almost cringed seeing it happen because it is my first iphone.
kinda kills the feeling of the personal unboxing
i know your pain

First off, when I activate a phone I am very careful with it.

Secondly, if a twelve year old like most of the posters in this thread said something to be about setting a newly activated phone down on the counter, I would laugh in his or her face.

I assume that most you are twelve and under because most don't know how to spell, don't the difference between "you're" and "your", or think that the word "prepared" is actually spelled "pre paired." Apparently in that last example the user came to the with his bluetooth device already paired to his new iPhone.

Considering that, like one poster mentioned, these phone will be outdated in a year, if I owned one I would be careful with it but wouldn't cry if it got "two hairline cracks" across the Apple symbol. It seems that most folks here don't understand that phones are made to be used, and often even get -gasp- outdated and replaced. If knowledge is power (which it is), most of the posters in this thread are quite powerless. Don't worry though, like your credit score, your power will grow with age as long as you are responsible.

Sorry, I know that I'm not contributing to this thread, it was just too much to pass up.

Try watching a "genius" slide your $2700 uMBP upside down around on the dirty, genius bar. It happened. And I looked him sternly in the eye and told him if he keeps doing that, I'm going to demand it be replaced.

He stopped.

You laugh in customers' faces?

I don't think you are overreacting at all. I would be pissed. I think you should get a new one.

This is one of the main reasons I ordered mine and had it shipped to me. I would rather unbox and activate it myself.

i opened my phone, and held it and it got fingerprints on it. im demanding apple sends me a new one.

2 short scratches through the apple logo?

Clearly you only saw them then. If you dont restart your phone often so what.

Wow, your kind of an ******* aren't you. First, who the **** cares if someone spells correctly, it's a god damn forum, not a college thesis. Second, if somehow they were 12 and could afford an iphone, not to say there aren't 12-year old's with iphones, they wouldn't give a **** since they didn't pay them or anything. Third, i can completely understand the ocd with people phones, they just paid at least $200 for it and want to to stay shiny and new. Same with me and my new stuff weather its a new psp, iphone 2g, uMBP, or something else i had to work hard for.

Clearly the few people on here that say they don't give a **** are either spoiled little bitches that have everything handed to them or really don't give a **** about anything, and if that is the case, then gtfo...

o, also, i like to type "well" anyhow, with commas and stuff. It just makes reading it easier, but i dont give a **** when someone spells their or there when they mean they're, i know what they mean. Just say to your self - "people are stupid" and laugh or chuckle if your that much of an *******....

Many people who use this forum do not speak English as their first language so it's not really your place to judge writing skills.

The most annoying thing about iPhone damage is that it affects resale value.....lots of people here plan on selling in June 2010 and want to minimise their loss.

lmfao. I'm sorry but you are SO overreacting. I used to work at a genius bar and i can just picture what you're talking about. You need to realize that those MINOR MINOR scratches on the back of the phone are inevitable, and seriously... almost invisible. Also, I guess it makes sense to freak if you see keys hitting the screen, but nothing can scratch an iphone screen other than glass or diamonds. Obviously if you tried you could scratch it with keys, but you would have to REALLY try haha. But really, this stuff is so small... don't stress over it so much, you still have amazing hardware and software at the end of the day.

Sure, I'll get in trouble with the mods over this but imagine a couple of some other guys little sperm soldiers getting inside your woman. Just a couple, no big deal, right? Yeah, it doesn't seem so good now does it? Those scratches mean something to him just like a couple of some other guys sperm inside of your woman would matter to you. I've never had glass OR diamonds let alone anything in my pocket with my iPhone and it has one scratch on it... so I understand that you genius bar workers have some "standards" and guidelines to follow but if I see one of you manhandling my possessions with disregard, you guys are gonna pay. I made the genius bar workers bring out 3 replacements, one after the other that had weak vibrate motors, scratches across the back of the Apple logo, etc... they got served the humble pie and made sure that I was satisfied but only after I ripped them mentally. You seriously gotta play smarter than these guys and have a game plan and stick to it when you go in there. And DON'T hesitate to get a manager involved if genius bar workers get lippy with you. They never seem to understand where the customer is coming from. Best wishes and luck with your phone. I say take it back and get it replaced.

Or maybe they only care about things that actually matter in life.

A phone not being one of them.

Dumbest post ever.

If I order one through at my local AT&T store can I have it shipped to me at home or do I have to pick it up there and have them activate it? I have to order it in person due to a problem with my account that they need to fix.
