i'm a bit anal about my stuff and would be TOTALLY ticked off if some "genius" scratched my iphone!

I would be upset about this too. I kept my original iPhone free of scratches for many months, without a case and with relatively little effort. When it finally did start to get a few marks, the ones that bothered me the MOST were those on the Apple logo. It would have bothered me even more if someone else had done it. I didn't obsess over it, but the fact is that some people like to keep their stuff looking good, and it's nobody else's business what does or does not bother them. It's kind of the same way many people laugh at those lining up to buy iPhones. Shame on them for criticizing what is important to others. Everybody has SOMEthing that's important to them that others would laugh at. If the scratches bother the OP, I say go back to the store and explain it to the manager. Chances are quite good they will take care of you.

Apple obviously takes great care in protecting its products in packaging, I'd be surprised and upset if their support staff didn't also take great care. They should have a work mat down or something when handling customer gear, and frankly, give a quick cleaning when they send them on their way.

You guys are very sensitive about your phones. You act like the girls on "Bridezilla."

I'm not too anal about it, but I do have a Fusion case on mine. The activator at my Apple store took the box, cut a slit in the plastic (down the groove between the top and bottom), and then handed it to me to remove the plastic. I was a bit shocked at that!

He them removed the 3GS from the box, and left the shipping plastic/cover on the phone (as some have mentioned), opening it just enough to plug in the cable for the iTunes activation.

I think some of the folks that don't take care of customers' phone probably had everything handed to them, so if something happened to *theirs*, they would just buy another. :)

I would have been PISSED if they did that to my new iPhone. I probably would have said something. I'd maybe complain to a manager or something if not the girl who did it.

Yes, that drives me crazy! An AT&T employee did that to me when I got my 3G last year, I politely asked for her manager, and got me a brand new me out the back. She was just tossing my brand new 3G around the table, and left a few scratches on the back before I even got my hands on it.

I received an email to submit feedback about this visit. I was quite honest and explained everything. At the end, it asked if I'd accept a phone call to discuss it. I selected YES. We'll see what happens!

Many people who use this forum do not speak English as their first language so it's not really your place to judge writing skills.

The most annoying thing about iPhone damage is that it affects resale value.....lots of people here plan on selling in June 2010 and want to minimise their loss.

That is a good point, and to those, I rescind my comments. I was waiting for the nazi who would find the errors in my post. They do happen, granted.

I love 12-year-old drama.

Truly, if it were my $2000 UMBP, I'd probably say something. And no, I don't laugh in customers faces, I guess I just at them after they leave. I'm not THAT much of a jerk. However, I am a jerk.

OP, let us know what happens. Before you do though, thank the Lord that this is your biggest problem (if it is). If not, be thankful you're still here.

First of all they should be treating customer's electronics with respect regardless of price range. You seem to have drawn a line in the sand at $2000. That's interesting. Second, this is happening within minutes of buying them. For the most part I think people expect they will get scratched eventually but not on day one. Not before even getting home with them.

I could argue that if you bought a brand new car and it got scratched even before pulling out of the dealers lot you would be pissed. You will probably argue that a car is much more expensive. I could then argue that the surface area of a car is much larger and a scratch is actually less noticeable on it than on a UMBP or iPhone. I bet you would still be pissed about that scratch though. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you went off on the car dealership like a 12-year old drama queen to use your words.

Last year when I had to have my 3G replaced because the screen kept going blank, the "Genius" scratched up the top of my new phone with his SIM card ejector.

Although that phone got replaced too because the screen turned pink.

I was at the Apple store near DC yesterday picking up a father's day gift (the line was over an hour long, even yesterday! store was JAMMED). While in line waiting to pay, I was looking around watching all the newbies (most had the newbie "gleam" in their eye, or just had no idea what to do). A bunch of the Apple guys around me would use a pen to carefully cut the plastic, then hand the box over to the buyer and let them pull it out on their own. One guy suggested to a buyer not to remove the plastic all the way. Another let a guy take a case out and slap it on before doing anything. All of them seemed to handle the things with care. A lot gave handshakes of congrads at the end, and there were a lot of smiles on faces when the box got opened and then again when the newly working phone was handed back to them.

OP: sorry buddy. I would call up Apple or return and get a new one.

ummm... minimum wage employee playing with an expensive device.

what else would expect?

edit: whoops, yea a Genius shouldnt be that dumb to scratch it up. but the other ppl activating the phones i wouldnt be suprised

Two Words:

INVISIBLE SHIELD

Scratches / Blemishes no problem

Yup! that's what I did. I had a ZAGG shield ready to go when my iPhone arrived by Fedex. Now if someone slides the phone across a desk, it's not such a big deal to me.

Part of me wonders if the people at these stores who are ripping the plastic off and sliding the phone around a hard surface are doing it on purpose, just to see the reactions of those who don't want scratches :)

That said, I do agree with those people who get angry seeing the stuff they paid for get scratched up by other people. Yeah, it may be just a phone, but it's a rather pricey one and the manufacturer went through great lengths to make it visually appealing. I'd rather not have someone else mar its looks for me. If my phone is scratched or dented or cracked or whatever, I'd rather it be my own fault.

I'd also rather it not happen immediately after it comes out of the box.

Fortunately, I've managed, through basic care and use of clear film skins like the Invisible Shield, to be able to regularly and heavily use my iPhones I've owned in the past, and yet not scratch them all up. And the people who've bought them secondhand from me appreciate this. It also pays off in terms of the value of the phone when I sell it and use the proceeds to help pay for my upgrades.

If you're okay with other people scratching up your stuff, well, good for you. Here's something that'll help you personalize the looks of your iPhone. Enjoy.

Anyway, I think this thread speaks to the benefits of ordering it online. It arrives sealed at a place you choose to have it delivered, you're not waiting in line, and no one else is clumsily manhandling the device before it's in your hands.

Good points. They really should be treating others' property with respect, no matter the price. Especially right out of the box. I will admit, I would be perturbed but I would forget that it had happened by the time I left.

The car analogy is a good one, but I really wouldn't care. I drive a BMW 3 series convertible that is currently missing its front bumper. I've been driving that way for three weeks now looking for the best deal on the work. It doesn't bother me in the least bit. The car is just as safe, and drives just as well as before. THOSE are the reasons that I bought it, not for it to look cool. Scratches happen, and only affect resale value. The real analogy here would be if the dealer scratched my car after I'd paid for it, but before I left the lot. I'd ask them to buff it out. If they wouldn't, it's only a car. That's life. It'll have a scratch in a half a year or so anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised to watch someone pitch a hissy fit either, but that's not me. I wouldn't appreciate a scratch on my iPhone as much as the next guy, but I guess the funny thing here for me was that I wouldn't go to an online forum and whine about it. However, if you can't come here to whine, where can you go? Whine on.

I understand your point, but, buddy: The bumper IS there for a reason. It does help to protect you. But have fun :)
On my Audi A4. There is a little crack/hole in the bumper. I am waiting a few weeks for the best price, but I think I found it :)

I guess to be more precise, it is the plastic facade that covers the steel impact bar. Either way, thanks for the understanding.

Whoa, I didn't know all the anal ppl come out when the new iPhone is released.
This thing deserves a poll of some sort. Like "was this acceptable of the Apple Store employee?"
Seriously who cares about it being pristine? It being in mint condition will not increase it's resale price. As long as it's in good condition, it'll sell for the same amount.
And if you have it in the case all the time...you never even see the scratches.
It still works fine, it hasn't affected the durability of the phone, so I don't see the problem.

Its JUST a phone.. don't be all OCD over it.. God forbid you drive a Royce and a small rock hits anywhere under your car..

Seriously USE THE PHONE dont baby it I found the more I babied the phone the less I actually enjoyed it (trying desperately to keep it in its case, keep it clean, not a smudg....aaaaaaarg!)

Holy f**ing Jesus.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. A couple of scratches on the back of a phone?

You should be on your knees thanking this is your biggest problem

Freaking OCD drama :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Even if the scratch was microscopic, WHY SHOULD SOMEONE AVE TO LIVE WITH DAMAGE THAT SOMEONE ELSE DID?? Those employees were complete ****ing *******s who had absolutely no respect for someone else's property. Those employees had no right to do what they did. If I were buying a new iPhone, I want it to be the same way as it left the factory, I don't want it "broken in" by those *******s. And those scratches are not inevitable. If you have a sleeve/case to keep your iPhone in, you will not get those scratches. Period. Don't write B.S. that the small scratches don't matter, because you know what, some people don't like them. You have to respect that.

-Maserati

in the end it's not really about the small almost invisible scratches but more about OTHER people completely manhandling YOUR things!

Hell you can't even lend an ipod to a friend these days without getting it back in a worse state than you left. And at the same time they try to act like the faults were already there before they had it.

But I gotta admit the people in this thread making little microfiber cloth "beds" for their iphone on their nightstand... That's just crazy dude.. OCD crazy..

Mmmh I have to say, irony is indeed a killer.

And your post fails on so many levels I wouldn't even know where to start. First off you laugh at other posters ages and grammar. Then when someone points out that your own grammar is severely lacking, you accuse him of being a nazi. You level Ad Hominem attacks indiscriminately, when you do not know the slightest bit of other people lives.

I think what the OP was getting at, was that he doesn't mind if he damages HIS phone HIMSELF, but it annoys him when someone else (especially someone who is getting paid to help him) does it. Even if it very minor damage, it is still damage done to your property. I am pretty careless with my stuff and they have all sorts of bumps and scratches (my current phone looks like it just came from Irak according to one of my workmates), but they are bumps and scratches inflicted by me. I would certainly mind if someone else presumed to treat my property as it is theirs.

In any case, one thing you say in your post is true... you are a bit of a douchebag indeed.

I think I would have said something to them about rubbing it all over the counter. I know with my wife’s iPhone a majority, if not all, of the scratches came from putting it on a counter which had dirt, salt, whatever on it and moving it when checking a message or picking it up. I would expect that type of behavior from AT&T but Apple, come on guys!

to the OP,

you should not have left the store unless they replaced it with a new one.

if they are the ones who scratched it, it's their own fault.

I would have never of left until i got it replaced.
